Lesson 2 Volcanic Hazards

The document discusses volcanic hazards and signs of impending volcanic eruptions. It describes primary volcanic hazards such as lahars, ash fall, pyroclastic flows, ballistic projectiles, volcanic gases, lava flows, and secondary hazards like earthquakes. It also provides tips for preparedness before, during and after a volcanic eruption, such as making evacuation plans, preparing an emergency kit, and following authorities' instructions. The document highlights six active volcanoes in the Philippines and has students research the hazards associated with each.

LESSON OBJECTIVES:

1. Explain various volcano – related hazards

2. Differentiate among different volcano hazards
3. Recognize signs of an impending volcanic eruption.
4. Interpret volcano hazard maps
5. Apply appropriate measures before, during and after a
volcanic eruption.
SIGNS OF IMPENDING VOLCANIC
ERUPTION
• Increased frequency of volcanic quakes with rumbling
sounds; occurrence of volcanic tremors
• Increased steaming activity
• Crater glow due to presence of magma at or near the
crater.
• Ground swells
• Localized landslides, rocks fall and landslides.
SIGNS OF IMPENDING VOLCANIC
ERUPTION
• Noticeable increase in the extent of drying up of
vegetation’s
• Increased temperature of hot springs
• Noticeable variation in the chemical content of springs
and crater lakes
• Drying up of springs/ wells around the volcano
PRIMARY
VOLCANIC
HAZARDS
LAHAR • is a mudflow
composed of
rocky debris,
water, and
pyroclastic
material. It flows
down from a
volcano, often
along a river
valley.
ASH FALL OR TEPHRA
• is hard, extremely abrasive, mildly
corrosive, conducts electricity
when wet and does not dissolve
in water.
PYROCLASTIC FLOW
• are high density
mixtures of hot, dry
rock fragments and
hot gases that move
away from the vent
that erupted them at
high speeds. They
may result from the
explosive eruption of
molten or solid rock
fragments.
• are basically rocks that an erupting
volcano sends into the air.

BALLISTIC PROJECTILE
VOLCANIC GASES
• are dangerous due to their
temperature and toxicity.
LAVA FLOW
• is described as a stream
of molten rock that
flows out of a volcano
or volcanic vent. Lava
flow can be very fluid of
very sticky, depending
on its composition and
temperatures

PHILIPPINES’
VOLCANOES
• The Philippines is “blessed” with hundreds of volcanoes .
PHIVOLCS explains that the country “sits on a unique tectonic
setting ideal to volcano formation”.

Although the image of a volcanic eruption is quite scary,

volcanoes are actually some of the most beautiful natural
spectacles in the world, featuring unique profiles and
supporting life around them.

TAAL VOLCANO
ERUPTION
• What: Volcanic eruption of Taal Volcano
• When: Jan 12, 2020 (43 years after its prev.
eruption in 1977.)
• Where: Batangas
• Alert level: 4
• Resulting: to suspension of classes,
work schedules and flights in the country
VOLCANIC ERUPTION
PREPAREDNESS
• Volcanic eruption has warning signs
• Occurrence of volcanic tremors, volcanic quakes with
rumbling sound
• Increase in steaming activity
• Crater glow due to presence of magma
• Ground fissuring, ground swells/inflate.
• Increase in temperature of hot springs and wells.
• Drying up springs/wells around the volcano
WHAT TO DO BEFORE A
VOLCANIC ERUPTION?
• Learn about your community’s warning system.
• Make an evacuation plan
• Create an emergency communication plan
• Prepare a disaster supply kit
• Contact your local emergency management office
(any professionals)
• Follow the authorities.
WHAT TO DO DURING A
VOLCANIC ERUPTION?
• Listen to a battery operated radio or television
• Follow evacuation order
• Avoid areas near the volcano
• If indoors
• Close all windows and doors
• Put all machinery inside a garage
• Bring animals into closed shelters
• If trapped outdoors, seek shelter indoors.
• Cover mouth and nose (dust mask)
• Wear goggles
• Keep skin covered (long sleeves and pants)
• Clear roofs of ash fall (exercise great caution when working in
roof)
REDUCING THE
IMPACT OF ERUPTION

• Avoid driving in heavy ash fall

• Wait for the announcement of government/health official
• Protect yourself from ash fall
• Remember to stay out of the restricted area (defined by gov’t
officials)
• If possible, stay away from areas of volcanic ash fall
Activity 2: Research Work
1. Search for the information on the attribute impacts to
specific hazards as discussed.
2. Ask learners to identify which type of volcanic hazards
are present in the 6 most active volcanoes of the
Philippines.
3. Prepare this template on a PPT presentation
