Columns Capacities

The document discusses the calculation of vertical load capacity for rectangular concrete columns according to ECP203-2018. It provides the general equation that considers the area of concrete and steel, as well as the compressive strength of concrete and yield stress of steel. Several examples are shown for columns of dimensions 20x40 cm, 20x50 cm, 20x60 cm, and 20x70 cm, with their calculated maximum vertical load capacities ranging from 115.8 to 202.7 tons.

Columns Capacity

Calculation of Vertical Load Capacity of some

Rectangular Columns according to ECP203-2018
General Equation Used in Calculating Maximum
Ultimate Vertical Load Capacity

Ac = Area of Concrete Column = b x t

As = Area of Steel Which can be taken equal to One Percent of Area of
Concrete = 0.01 Ac
fcu = Concrete Characteristic Compressive Strength for Columns

fy = Yield Stress of Steel

Pu = The Maximum Ultimate Vertical Load that a Column with Ac and

As can carry
Pu applied = The Applied Vertical Load on Column from External Loads
Example 1 20 x 40 cm Column

Ac = 0.2 x 0.4 = 0.08 m2

20 cm
As = 0.01 * Ac = 0.08 *0.01 = 0.0008 m2
fcu = 35 N/mm2 = 3500 t/m2
fy = 350 N/mm2 = 35000 t/m2 40 cm

Pu = 0.35 ∗ fcu ∗ Ac − As + (0.67 ∗ fy ∗ As)

3500 0.08 0.0008 35000 0.0008

Pu = 115.8 ton
Example 1 20 x 50 cm Column

Ac = 0.2 x 0.5 = 0.10 m2

20 cm
As = 0.01 * Ac = 0.10 *0.01 = 0.001 m2
fcu = 35 N/mm2 = 3500 t/m2
fy = 350 N/mm2 = 35000 t/m2 50 cm

Pu = 0.35 ∗ fcu ∗ Ac − As + (0.67 ∗ fy ∗ As)

3500 0.1 0.001 35000 0.001

Pu = 144.8 ton
Example 1 20 x 60 cm Column

Ac = 0.2 x 0.6 = 0.12 m2

20 cm
As = 0.01 * Ac = 0.12 *0.01 = 0.0012 m2
fcu = 35 N/mm2 = 3500 t/m2
fy = 350 N/mm2 = 35000 t/m2 60 cm

Pu = 0.35 ∗ fcu ∗ Ac − As + (0.67 ∗ fy ∗ As)

3500 0.12 0.0012 35000 0.0012

Pu = 173.7 ton
Example 1 20 x 70 cm Column

Ac = 0.2 x 0.7 = 0.14 m2

20 cm
As = 0.01 * Ac = 0.14 *0.01 = 0.0014 m2
fcu = 35 N/mm2 = 3500 t/m2
fy = 350 N/mm2 = 35000 t/m2 70 cm

Pu = 0.35 ∗ fcu ∗ Ac − As + (0.67 ∗ fy ∗ As)

3500 0.14 0.0014 35000 0.0014

Pu = 202.7 ton
All Previous Calculations can be Summarized as follows :
fcu = 35 N/mm2 = 350 kg/cm2= 3500 t/m2
fy = 350 N/mm2 = 3500 kg/cm2 = 35000 t/m2

Column Dimensions Column Capacity

b (cm) t (cm) (ton)

20 40 115.8

20 50 144.8

20 60 173.7

20 70 202.7
