Detailed Lesson Plan in Science

The detailed lesson plan discusses biodiversity and its importance in maintaining ecosystem stability. The 7 E's approach is used, including engaging students with pictures and videos about biodiversity before exploring the topic through group activities. Students then explain and elaborate on what they learned about how biodiversity benefits ecosystems and how human activities like deforestation can negatively impact other species.

Detailed Lesson Plan in

Science 8
(Using the 7 E’s Approach)

I. Objectives
A. At the end of the lesson, students will be able to.
(a) Explain the importance of ecological diversity.
(b) Find out how changes in the environment can affect species extinction
(c) Distinguish environmental changes that may result in the loss of species.

II) Subject Matter

Topic: Advantage of high biodiversity in maintaining the stability of an ecosystem.

Values Integration: Taking good care of the environment.
Materials: video clips, pictures, activity sheets, and PowerPoint presentation

I) Procedure

Teachers’ Activity Students’ Activity

A. Preliminary Activities

(1) Prayer

May I request everyone to pls stand for

a short prayer. (Call a student to lead a prayer)

(2) Checking of attendance

Okay, Let’s check your attendance. Group

Leader kindly check your group’s attendance.

Group 1 who’s absent? None, Sir.

Group 2? None, Sir.
Group 3? None, Sir.
Group 4? None, Sir

Okay Very Good. Perfect attendance.

(3) Review of the previous lesson

Okay, before we hop into our new lesson,

let us first have a review of what we have
discussed last meeting.
(Call a student)
Can you recall what we have discussed
last meeting? The concept of species and classification of
organism.
Okay, very good!

How about you (Call a student), what

have you learned from our last discussion? I learned how to classify organisms using the
hierarchical taxonomic system.
Okay, very good!

B. Elicit
(Show some pictures)
Let’s have a short game, I will present some
pictures and I want you to tell me what is it
all about.
Okay, first picture.

Mangrove Trees

Fishes
Marine Life
Coral Reefs

Forest

C. Engage

Okay, based on the picture that I have

shown you, what do you think will be
our next topic all about?

(Call a student) Something about species and organisms

Okay, thank you!

Maybe

(Call a student) About Ecosystem.

Yes, very good!

So, what do we need in maintaining the

stability of our ecosystem? We need a high advantage of biodiversity

Yes, very good! We need a high advantage

of biodiversity. So, what will be our lesson for Biodiversity!
today?

Yes, exactly, our lesson for today is about

Biodiversity.

(Show the Lesson Objectives)

Okay, Biodiversity, when you say Bio, it means? Life

When we say diversity, it means? State of being diverse

So, what is biodiversity?

Let’s find out more about biodiversity as we
Go along the discussion
D. Explore

To understand our lesson let’s have an activity.

I will group you into 4. Each group will be given
time to brainstorm and distinguish the advantages
and the importance of biodiversity.

Using a marker, you will write it down in a cartolina

or manila paper that I will be providing you, and you
will choose a representative among your group
that will present your work in front.

You will be graded according to the rubric.

Presentation/Explanation– 30%
Organization – 30 %
Content - 40%
Total - 100%

E. Explain

Let’s examine and hear your groups’

answer.

(Each group shall have designated (student will present their work)
speaker to present their group activity)

F. Elaborate

I have here a short video presentation about

Biodiversity and its importance, which your
activity a while ago.

(Show a short video presentation)

I want to emphasize to you that life depends

on life. Animals cannot exist without green
plants and living things create niches for
other living things.

Biodiversity refers to the variety of life in the

area
A population is a group of living things within a
certain area that are all of the same species.

A population of one kind may affect the

population of another kind within the community.

(Show pictures)

Which of the two pictures has a greatest Forest

biodiversity?

Okay, very good!

A forest has the greatest amount of biodiversity
than in a cornfield, because in a forest community
some populations such as ants, birds, and other insects
can be very large in number.

What keeps a population from increasing?

(Call a student) Death
Environmental changes

Yes, that’s all correct.

Limiting factors are environmental condition

that keep a population from increasing in size
and help balance the ecosystem.
But more often human activities/actions
have resulted in habitat loss and degradation
that have accelerated the rate of extinction.

What human activities do you think have

contributed to the extinction of the species?

(Call a student) Deforestation

Yes, very good
Another answer? Throwing garbage on the rivers and seas

Yes, very good!

We must remember that a sustainable
development means a society should leave
under carrying capacity of the environment
and the carrying capacity is affected by the
changes in the environment, so therefore
what should we do? We should never involve ourselves in the
mentioned human activities that contribute
to the habitat loss and degradation of other
species. We should protect our environment

okay, very good!

In a balanced ecosystem, what do you
think does the organisms need? A balanced environment

Okay, very good.

To understand our lesson further, let’s have

a group activity

Activity 2

Directions: Arrange the following pictures from the ecosystem that has the highest
biodiversity to the ecosystem with the lowest biodiversity. Write the number “1” below the
picture with the highest biodiversity and the number “5” for the lowest.

Q1. What biotic components are present in the ecosystem that has the lowest biodiversity?
Q2. Describe some relationships and interactions that occur among these biotic components
Q3. Why is high biodiversity advantageous over low biodiversity?
G. Evaluation

Directions:

1. This refers to the variety of life in the area.

a. ecosystem c. population
b. forest d. biodiversity

2. Which human action can have the greatest impact on habitat loss and degradation of
other animals?

a. reforestation c. both a and b

b. deforestation d. none of the above

3. This is a group of living things within a certain area that are all of the same species.

a. ecosystem c. population
b. forest d. biodiversity

4. These are environmental conditions that keep a population from increasing in size and help
balance the ecosystem.

a. ecosystem c. population
b. limiting factors d. biodiversity

5. Which of the following has the lowest amount of biodiversity?

a. forest c. ocean
b. desert d. rain forest

H. Extend

Recreate the habitat of an endangered or extinct species in a medium of your

choice. Use one of the media listed below. Show the elements of the ecosystem that
human activities have affected and that are contributing to the decrease of species.

You can create one of the following (pictures from www.yahoo.com images) or a
drawing or writing that uses vivid imagery.
