CHAPTER ACTIVITIES
BS-CRIM 2D

I. Write down the names of the person who were considered “pioneer or father” in
the field of fingerprints, personal identification, dactyloscopy and poroscopy. Give
a short description on what were their contribution.

 Alphonse Bertillon-“ Father Of Personal Identification” the first to devise a

scientific method of identification called Anthropometry. Anthropometry is
the first scientific method which is done by measuring the various structure
of the Human body. He is also known to be a father of “Mug Shot”
photography.

 Nehmiah Grew - The first person to publish a study describing ridges and
pores of the hand and feet.

 Sir Francis Galton - A British Anthropologist and Biologist who published

his study, a classification and filling system using all the ten (10) fingers. He
assigned the patterns into three (3) General types; arches, loops and whorls.
He said that the possibility of two prints being alike was 1:65,000,000,000

 Johannesburg Purkenjie- “Father Of Dactyloscopy” Professor at the

university of Breslau, Germany. Established a certain role for classification
and be able to identify nine (9) types of pattern although never associated to
identification.

 Sir William James Herschel - the first to advocate the use of fingerprints as
substitute for signature from among Indian native to avoid impersonation.

 Juan Vucetich- A Spanish counterpart of Henry who developed his own

system for signature classification in Argentina and was accepted in almost
Spanish speaking country.

 Inspector Eduardo Alvarez- A Buenos Aires, Argentina in 1892. He made

the first criminal fingerprint identification. He was able to identify Francisca
Rojas, a woman who murdered her two sons and cut her own throat to put
the blame on others. Her bloody prints was left on a door post, providing her
identity as a murderer. Alvarez was trained by Juan Vucetich.

 Rojas Case- First miseries case solved using Fingerprint Examination.

 Edward Richard Henry- Developed by Henry system of classification at

Scotland Yard which was accepted by almost all English-speaking country.
Known as the “Father Of Fingerprint”

 Gilbert Thompson- A Geologist in New Mexico, adopted the first individual

use of fingerprint in August 8, 1882 as a protection to prevent tampering
with the pay order.

 May K. Holand- First American instructress in Dactyloscopy

 Mr. Jones - One who first taught FP in the Phils (1900)
 Edmond Locard - “Father of Podoscopy” was a forensic scientist popularity
regarded as the “Sherlock Holmes of France”

II. In a separate sheet of paper, Make a list of personalities with the title of their
book or paper.

1. Nehemian Grew- (September 26,1641 - March 25, 1712)

 Was an english plant anatomist and Physiologist known as “Father Of Plant
Anatomy”
Book Title : 1684 / Nehemian Grew
 Published the first paper on the Ridge structure of skin of the fingers and
plants.
 The Anatomy Of Plants.

2. Henry Faulds
 British Surgeon-Superintendent of Tsukiji Hospital in Tokyo, Japan took up
the study of “skin furrows”
 Recognized the importance of fingerprints as a
means of identification but devised a method of classification as well.
Book Title : 1880 / Dr. Henry Faulds
 Published an article of the Science Journal “Nature” Discussed
fingerprint as a means of personal identification.
 He is also credited with the first fingerprint Identification a
greasyfingerprint deposited on an alcohol bottle.

3. Gilbert Thompson
 U.S Geological Survey in New Mexico

Book Title : 1882 / Gilbert Thompson

 Used his own thumb print on a document to help prevent forgery. The
first known use of fingerprints in the United States “lying bob.

4. Alphonse Bertillion
 A clerk in the prefecture of Police of at Paris, France devised a system of
classification, known as anthropometry or Bertillion System

Book Title : 1882 / Alphonse Bertillion

 Bertillion’s system included measurements such as head length/width,

length of middle finger, length of left foot
Also established a system of Photographing faces. Also known as
mugshot.

5. Govard Bidloo (March 12,1649 - March 30,1713)

Book Title : 1685 / Govard Bidoo

 Anatomy Of the Human Body included description of friction ridge skin
(papillary ridge) details.

6. Marcelo Malpighi
 An Anatomy professor at the university of Bologna, noted fingerprint
ridges, spirals and loops in his treatise.
 “Malpighi” layer, which is approximately 18cmm thick no mention of
friction ridge skin uniqueness of permanence was made by Grew, Bidoo
of Malpighi.

7. Johann Christoph Andreas Mayer

 Was the first to declare “friction ridge skin is unique”

Book Title : 1788 / Johann Christoph Andreas Mayer.

 Anotomical Cooper-Plates with Apporiaye explanations containing

drawing of friction ridge skin pattern.

8. Jan Evangelista Purkenje

 Anatomy Professor at the University Of Breslau Book Title: 1823 / Jan
Purkinje • Published his thesis discussing nine (9) fingerprint patterns,
also made no mention of the value of fingerprints for personal
identification.

9. Herman Welcker
 German Anthropologist Of the University Of Halle, studied friction
ridge permanence.
Book Title: 1856 / Herman Welcker
 Printed his own right hand in 1856 and again in 1897 then published a
study in 1898.

 American Microscopist, proposed that finger and palm prints left on any
objects might be used to solve crimes.
Book Title: 1877 Thomas Taylor
 The American Journal Of Microscopy and Popular Sciences
 “Hand Marks Under the Microscope”
III. Conduct a research on a current development of fingerprint science globally

and nationally (new titles of books/magazines/cases on fingerprints in the

Philippines and other countries.

 The Discovery of DNA Fingerprinting

In September 1984, Dr. Alec Jeffreys, A geneticist from the University of Leicester
in Great Britain was studying heredity disease in families. He was focusing on
methods to resolve paternity and immigration disputes by demonstrating the
genetic links between individuals.

1984 — Dr. Alec Jeffrey’s released could detect variations in human DNA, in the
form of these mini satellites. DNA fingerprinting is a technique that
simultaneously detects lots of mini satellites in the genome to produce a pattern
unique to an individual.

 Invented Fingerprint Sensor

Parameswaran B Annapoorani, Android Greek! First mobile phone to ever have a

fingerprint scanner was Toshiba G500 and G900.

 Current Standard for Fingerprint Identification

There are two standards currently used for fingerprint, Apendix F andPIV-
071006 Afendix f of the electronic biometric transmission specification
(EBTS) has stringent image quality condition focusing on the Human
fingerprint comparison and facilitating large scale matching one-to-many
matching operation.

 1933—GRNo-L— 38434 December 23, 1933

The people of the Philippine Islands Plantiff apelle vs Marciano Medina y
Diokno (Alias Mariano Medina, Alias Alejandro Dula). Agrepino Ruiz
made an impression as the first expert witness who’s expect opinion
receives merits in the Philippines fudicial history. This could be considered
