I. RATIONALE

A summer reading program was proposed to encourage and cultivate the habit of reading
in young minds and young people. It is very important for maintaining a child's current
grade level skills and for pushing forward to develop skills above the current grade level.
A University of Tennessee, Knoxville, research study shows that children who don't read
over the summer lose at least two months of reading development. This is often referred to
as 'the summer slide' or the 'summer learning loss.' On the other hand, students who do read
over the summer may gain a month of proficiency in reading. Reading over the summer is
not a suggestion to keep kids busy; it's a critical requirement to help students stay on track
for their entire educational career and beyond.
For this reason, Dumalogdog Elementary School is providing extra instructional time to
help children achieve higher levels of literacy that will better prepare them in their future
career choices.
So then, Reading Enhancement Program is developed using PHIL-IRI passages and
questionnaires, Smart SCHOOL IN A BAG (SIAB) Interactive Technology in partnership
with the Smart Communications Incorporated and give additional assistance to Dumalogdog
Elementary School learners who have fallen behind to learn to their best of their ability and
to bring back into mainstream classes as far as possible.
On the other hand, this activity certainly addresses not only existing problems on reading
deficiencies of our learners but further nurture and hone the individual’s love of reading thus
exposing them to various learning opportunities where reading skills will be enhanced
through play, fun games, oral interpretation, videos and other enjoyable activities. Teachers
in other learning areas may serve as reading teachers as well.

II. OBJECTIVES:

1. assist learners at risk to improve their reading skills

2. enhance/develop the reading abilities of slow/non-readers

3. evaluate the improvement of the pupils’ reading proficiency

4. equip pupils with necessary reading materials like tablets, etc.
