INTRODUCTION
OBJECTIVE
The purpose of this Research is to ascertain the relationship between these determinants and
the impact of higher education students' socio-economic position on their academic
achievement.
2. Identify the relationship between the socioeconomic status of the parents and the
academic performance of their children’s.
3. Analyze the effect of socioeconomic status on the academic performance of senior high
school students.
4. Determine the comparison on academic achievement of high and low school students
socioeconomic standing.``
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
C. Occupation
SCOPE AND DELIMITATION
This study’s target respondents are Senior High School Students of San Rafael National High
School whose studies were hampered by a lack of daily allowance and whose grades
suffered as a result. The total number of respondents at least 50% made up of students
from various strands.
SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
The purpose of this study is to investigate the impact of socioeconomic status on students'
academic lives and academic achievement. This study may assist parents, teachers, and
educational administrators in understanding the significance of SES in determining academic
achievement of students.
This will be beneficially to the following:
STUDENT
who excel academically benefit from increased job opportunities, higher salaries, higher
levels of confidence and self-esteem, lower levels of anxiety and depression.
TEACHERS
Teachers can encourage students' academic progress by setting clear, encouraging
standards for each individual student.
PARENTS
This study will educate them on how their children’s academic performance is influenced by
their socioeconomic status.
FUTURE RESEARCHER
This research will benefit future researchers for this may serve as their reference in their
future research or studies encouraging analytical and critical thinking through practical
learning defining one's personal, professional, and establishing one-on-one relationships
with outstanding academics in their field. They will use this study as the foundation for
another research project, which will help them learn more about it and make it easier for
them to obtain data
CHAPTER II
Socioeconomic status reflects and is measured by the social and economic status of family
members. People generally believe that there is a strong and stable correlation between SES
and children’s academic achievement and cognitive development. However, the conclusions
from studies are inconsistent (Bradley and Corwyn, 2002; Lareau, 2011).
Many researchers have found that family background factors can explain most of the
variance in students’ academic achievement and play a more important role than schools
(Arnold and Doctoroff, 2003; Reardon, 2011; Berkowitz et al., 2017; Lawson and Farah,
2017).
The socioeconomic index (SEI) designed by Duncan (1961) estimates SES based on the
income and education level of each occupation. The Michigan State Department of
Education directly defines SES as having three dimensions: family income, parents’
education level, and parents’ occupation; this definition has been used extensively in
numerous studies (Gottfried, 1985; Hauser, 1994; Bornstein and Bradley, 2014).
Simple Random Sampling Technique and Socio-economic Status scale developed by
Bhardwaj (2014). The score obtained by the students in the last examination was considered
as Academic Achievement of the students collected from the school once record book.
Pearson’s coefficient of correlation and t- test as statistical techniques used for the analysis.
It was noticed that there exist a positive significant correlation between SES and Academic
Achievement.Rather and
Sharma (2015) examined the impact of Socio-economic Status on Achievement grades.
Data were collected from 200 Secondary school students of Aligarh district of Uttar
Pradesh. The study showed that there was an intimate relationship between SES and
Academic grades of the students. It also revealed that male students performs better and
got better marks in comparison to their female counterpart. It further highlighted that there
was no significant difference between urban and rural students in their Academic
performance
As the SES is seen as a predictor of academic performance. Actually, the growing body of
independent research has obviously shown that there are deficiencies for students from
lower income families and ; those deficiencies are related to academic performance (Farah
& Hackman, 2012; Stevens et al., 2009; von Stumm,2017).
It is also possible to find out inconsistent results on the relation between SES and academic
performance. While some studies have found strong relation to those two variables
(Adegoke & Osokoya, 2015; Tomul & Savasci, 2012; Zuzovsky, 2010) some others have not
revealed any significant relation (Gobena, 2018; Koban Koc, 2016; Zhao et al., 2012)., 2016;
Zhao et al., 2012).
