1. Explain, with suitable circuit diagram, the single-phase full-controlled bridge rectifier fed dc
motor drive. Draw the voltage waveform across the motor terminal and find out its average value.
(5)
2. A dc series motor working from 500 V supply runs at a speed of 900 rpm, when the load is such
that the current is 120 A. The resistance of the motor is 0.18 Ω, of which 0.04 Ω is the series field
resistance. Assuming that the flux is proportional to the armature current, calculate the speed
when a resistance of 1.2 Ω is connected in series with the motor and the torque is 70% of the full-
load value. (5)
3. A 220 V, 1440 rpm, 50 A separately excited dc motor has an armature resistance of 0.6 Ω. It is fed
from a 3-phase full-controlled rectifier. The available ac source has a line voltage of 415 V, 50
Hz. A star-delta connected transformer is used to feed the motor so that the motor terminal voltage
equals to rated voltage when converter firing angle is zero. Calculate (i) transformer turns ratio (ii)
the value of firing angle when the motor is running at 900 rpm and rated torque. (5)
4. A would-rotor induction motor is operating at rated voltage and frequency with its slip rings
shorted and with a load of about 25 percent of the rated value for the machine. If the rotor
resistance of this machine is doubled by inserting external resistors into the rotor circuit, draw the
corresponding torque-speed characteristics and explain what happens to the following: (a) Slip s
(b) Motor speed nm (c) The induced voltage in the rotor (d) The rotor current (e) The torque
induced. (5)
5. A 3 kW, 400 volt, 50 Hz, 4 poles, 1370 rpm, star connected three-phase induction motor has the
following equivalent circuit parameters referred to the stator: Rs=2Ω, Rr/= 5 Ω, Xs = 3 Ω, Xr/= 3
Ω. Load characteristics are matched with motor such that motor runs at 1370 rpm with full voltage
across its terminals. The motor is controlled by terminal voltage and load torque is proportional to
speed. Calculate the motor terminal voltage and current at half the rated speed. (5)
