below.

Polynomial Function Standard Degree Leading Leading Constant

Form term Coefficient Term
1. 𝑃(𝑥) = 7𝑥 3 + 4𝑥 2 + 6 − 9𝑥 4

2. 𝑃(𝑥) = 1 + 3𝑥 − 9𝑥 5

3. 𝑓(𝑥) = (𝑥 + 3)(𝑥 − 2)(𝑥 + 5)

-
4. 𝑦 = 9𝑥 2 − 𝑥 5 + 𝑥 9

5. 𝑓(𝑥) = (𝑥 − 1)2 (𝑥 + 2)2

Guide Questions:
1. How did you write the polynomial into standard form?
2. How did you determine the degree of the polynomial? Leading term? Leading
coefficient? Constant term?
3. Can you express the given polynomial into a polynomial function?

2
POLYNOMIAL FUNCTION is a function of the form
𝑷(𝒙) = 𝒂𝒏 𝒙𝒏 + 𝒂𝒏−𝟐 𝒙𝒏−𝟐 +. . . +𝒂𝟏 𝒙 + 𝒂𝟎, 𝒂𝒏 ≠ 𝟎 and n is a non-negative integer.
where n (exponent) is the degree
𝒂𝟎 , 𝒂𝟏 , … , 𝒂𝒏 are real numbers called Coefficients,
𝒂𝒏 𝒙𝒏 is the Leading Term,
𝒂𝒏 is the Leading Coefficient, and
𝒂𝟎 is the Constant Term.

Illustrative examples:
1. 𝑓(𝑥) = 3𝑥 5 − 7𝑥 2 + 9
5 is the degree
3, −7, 𝑎𝑛𝑑 9 are the coefficients
3𝑥 5 is the leading term
3 is the leading coefficient
9 is the constant term

2. 𝑦 = 𝑥 4 + 6𝑥 3 − 15𝑥 2 + 11
______ is the degree
______ are the coefficients
______ is the leading term
______ is the leading coefficient
______ is the constant term

The terms of polynomial function may be written in any order. However, the
powers/exponents should be written in decreasing order to express the function into
STANDARD FORM.
Note: P(x) can also be denoted as f(x) or y

Consider the table below. To help you understand more about polynomial functions.

Polynomial Function Standard Form Degree Leading Leading Const

𝑃(𝑥) = 5𝑥 3 + 4𝑥 2 + 6 𝑃(𝑥) = 5𝑥 3 + 4𝑥 2 + 6 3 5𝑥 3 5 6

𝒚 = 𝟓𝒙𝟐 + 𝟐𝒙𝟑 − 𝒙𝟒 + 𝟑 𝑦 = −𝑥 4 + 2𝑥 3 + 5𝑥 2 + 3 4 −𝑥 4 −1 3

You have learned how to evaluate polynomials in previous topics. Thus,

substitution and synthetic division are still applicable in solving problems involving
polynomial functions.

Examples:
1. A demographer predicts that the population, P, of a town t years from now can
be modeled by the function 𝑃(𝑡) = 10,000 + 150𝑡 + 400𝑡 2 − 3𝑡 4 + 5𝑡 5 . What will be
the population 10 years from now?

Solution:
𝑃(𝑡) = 10,000 + 150𝑡 + 400𝑡 2 − 3𝑡 4 + 5𝑡 5 .
𝑃(𝑡) = 5𝑡 5 − 3𝑡 4 + 0𝑡 3 + 400𝑡 2 + 150𝑡 + 10,000
Using synthetic division: 𝑡 = 10

3
10 5 −3 0 400 150 10000
50 470 4700 51000 511500
5 47 470 5100 51150 521500

Since 𝑃(10) = 521500, therefore the population after 10 years from now is 521500.
Using substitution:
𝑃(𝑡) = 10,000 + 150𝑡 + 400𝑡 2 − 3𝑡 4 + 5𝑡 5 .
𝑃(10) = 10000 + 150(10) + 400(102 ) − 3(104 ) + 5(105 )
𝑃(10) = 10000 + 1500 + 400(100) − 3(10000) + 5(100000)
𝑃(10) = 10000 + 1500 + 40000 − 30000 + 500000
𝑷(𝟏𝟎) = 𝟓𝟐𝟏𝟓𝟎𝟎

2. Mark scores a final exam by starting with 250 points and subtracting 5 points for
each incorrect answer. What will be his score if he misses 4 questions? If he
answers 9 incorrect questions, will he receive a score of 205 points?
SOLUTION:
Let x represent the number of incorrect answers.
𝑆(𝑥) is Mark’s score in the exam.
Hence, 𝑆(𝑥) = 250 − 5𝑥

a. What will be his score if he misses 4 questions?

𝑆(𝑥) = 250 − 5𝑥
Substitute the value of x
𝑆(4) = 250 − 5(4)
Multiply 5 and 4
𝑆(4) = 250 − 20
Simplify the result.
𝑆(4) = 230

Mark will receive 230 points if he has 4 incorrect answers.

b. If he answers 9 incorrect questions, will he receive a score of 205 points?

Verify if 𝑆(𝑥) = 205 when 𝑥 = 9, or if 𝑆(9) = 205
𝑆(𝑥) = 250 − 5𝑥
𝑆(9) = 250 − 5(9)
205 = 250 − 5(9)
205 = 250 − 45
205 = 205

Yes, Mark will receive a score of 205 if he has 9 incorrect answers.

3. A car manufacturer determines that its profit, P, in thousands of pesos, can be

modeled by the function 𝑷(𝒙) = 𝟎. 𝟎𝟎𝟏𝟐𝟓𝒙𝟒 + 𝒙 − 𝟑, where x represents the number
of cars sold. What is the profit when there are 300 cars sold?

4
SOLUTION:
There are 300 cars sold, therefore 𝑥 = 300.
𝑃(𝑥) = 0.00125𝑥 4 + 𝑥 − 3
𝑃(300) = 0.00125(300)4 + 300 − 3
𝑃(300) = 10,125,000 + 300 − 3
𝑃(300) = 10,125,297
The car manufacturer will have a profit of ₱ 10,125,297.00

4. Ms. Duran wants to paint her entire bedroom whose dimensions are
(𝑥 + 5), (𝑥 + 8), 𝑎𝑛𝑑 (2𝑥 − 1). To estimate the pain to be used, she needs to find the
volume of her bedroom. Can you help her?

Let y be the volume, and the bedroom is assumed to be rectangular.

𝑦 = 𝐿𝑊𝐻
𝑦 = (𝑥 + 5)(𝑥 + 8)(2𝑥 − 1)
𝑦 = (𝑥 2 + 13𝑥 + 40)(2𝑥 − 1)
𝑦 = 2𝑥 3 + 25𝑥 2 + 67𝑥 − 40

5. Finding the roots of the polynomial function, 𝑓(𝑥) = 2𝑥 4 + 𝑥 3 − 16𝑥 2 + 3𝑥 + 18.

Recalling the Rational Root Theorem, the possible roots are:

𝑝 = 18, factors of 18 are {±1, ±2, ±3, ±6, ±9, ±18}
𝑞 = 2, factors of 2 are {±1, 2 ±}
1 3 9
Possible roots are: {±1, ±2, ±3, ±6, ±9, ±18, ± 2 , ± 2 , ± 2}
Using synthetic division, we have
−1 2 1 −16 3 18 2𝑥 4 + 𝑥 3 − 16𝑥 2 + 3𝑥 + 18 = 0
−2 1 15 −18
2 −1 −15 18 0 (𝑥 + 1)(2𝑥 3 − 𝑥 2 − 15𝑥 + 18) = 0

2 2 −1 −15 18
4 6 −18 (𝑥 − 2)(𝑥 + 1)(2𝑥 2 + 3𝑥 − 9) = 0
2 3 −9 0
(𝑥 − 2)(𝑥 + 1)(2𝑥 − 3)(𝑥 + 3) = 0

Let Us Reflect

In every problem we have encountered in life, there must be solutions to it. To

solve a problem, we must accept and understand why such challenge. Then,
evaluate or assess the situation if we can solve it alone or look for something or
someone to help and guide us to overcome it. There is no shortcut in solving
problems. There must be proper procedures to be followed. It could be challenging
but fulfilling if we have done it the right way. Remember, God will not give us
problems without solutions.

Write a short essay reflecting how you feel today and include the
following: three things that you have learned about the lesson, two real-life
situations where you can apply the concept of polynomial functions, and one
question that you want to ask about the topic.
