LESSON1: EVALUATE ALGEBRAIC EXPRESSIONS
OBJECTIVES:
• writes algebraic expressions by representing
unknown quantities.
• evaluates algebraic expressions by replacing the
given value for the variable.
• shows appreciation in evaluating algebraic
expressions.
I. WHAT HAPPENED
In this module we will
Hi. I’m teacher Ed. Welcome learn on how to
to Math 7 SLK. evaluate algebraic
expression?
Let us start
with the Pre-
Test.
3
PRE-ACTIVITIES/PRE-TEST:
I. Directions: Read each item carefully. Choose the letter of the best
answer. Write your answer in your math 7 activity notebook.
a. evaluate c. simplify
b. substituting d. investigate
a. 7x + 7 c. -3x
b. 3x + 7 d. -3x + 7
x = 1, y = 2, z = -1
1. 2x + y – z 3. (y + z) – 24
2. 4x + 3y 4. 3x + 7y – 4z
4
II. WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
Remember
Variables are symbols or letters that may take one or more than one
values. These variables may represent elements of the set of real numbers.
DISCUSSION:
How is an algebraic expression evaluated?
Examples:
A. Evaluate 3x + 5, when x = 2.
Solution:
Remember 3x means 3 times x.
To evaluate the expression when x = 2,
We substitute 2 for x, and then simplify.
3x + 5
1. Substitute 2 for x. =3(2) + 5
2. Multiply. =6+5
3. Add. = 11
5
B. Evaluate a2 when a = 7
Solution:
We substitute 7 for a, and then simplify the expression
a2
1. Substitute 7 for a. = 72
2. Use the definition of exponent. = (7)(7)
3. Multiply. = 49
Solution:
We substitute 9 for y, and then simplify the expression
(5y ÷ 3) + 2(y – 6)
6
III. WHAT I HAVE LEARNED
Congratulations!!! You just learned on how to evaluate algebraic
expressions.
EVALUATION/POST TEST:
I. Directions: Read each item carefully. Choose the letter of the best
answer. Write your answer in your math 7 activity notebook.
II. Find the value of each expression. Look for the solution to each item in the
coded answers and write the corresponding letter on the line above it.
7
LESSON 2: ADDING AND SUBTRACTING POLYNOMIALS
OBJECTIVES:
• states the rules in adding and subtracting polynomials
• add and subtract polynomials
• demonstrates appreciation in adding and subtracting
polynomials
I. WHAT HAPPENED
In this module we will learn
Hi again. I’m teacher Ed and about how to add and
welcome back to Math 7 subtract polynomials.
SLK.
8
PRE-ACTIVITIES/PRE-TEST:
Directions: Read each item carefully. Choose the letter of the best answer.
Write your answer in your math 7 activity notebook.
a. 5x3 – 2x2 + 7 c.
b. 6x4 – x3 + 10 d. x- + 7x2 – 4
a. – 6m b. – 3m c. 5m d. 7m
a. 4 b. 3 c. 2 d. 1
a. -5x + 11 c. -5x – 5
b. -5x + 5 d. -5x – 11
9
II. WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
Remember
A polynomial is an algebraic expression where all variables when expressed
in the numerator have nonnegative integral exponents.
Terms
Example Explanation
10
DISCUSSION:
➢ Like Terms are terms whose variables (and their exponents such as
the 2 in x2) are the same. In other words, terms that are "like"
each other. Note: the coefficients (the numbers you multiply by,
such as "2" in 2x) can be different.
➢
Example of like terms:
Adding Polynomials
Three Steps:
Step 1: Arrange each polynomial with the term with the highest
exponent first then in a decreasing order of exponents.
Step 2: Group the like terms. Like terms are terms whose variables
and exponents are the same.
11
Add the like terms: 4x2 + 7x + 5
2x2 + 6y + 3xy
3x2 - 5xy - x
6xy + 5
5x2 + 6y + 4xy - x + 5
Subtracting Polynomials
Steps:
1. Change the sign of the Subtrahend (in other words turn "+"
into "-", and "-" into "+"),
Place like terms together: 3x2y − 2x2y − xy2 + 5xy2 + 7x2y2 − x2y2
Which is: (3 – 2)x2y + (-1+ 5)xy2 + (7−1)x2y2
12
III. WHAT HAVE I LEARNED
Congratulations!!! You just learned on how to add and subtract
polynomials.
EVALUATION/POST TEST:
Directions: Read each item carefully. Choose the letter of the best answer. Write
your answer in your math 7 activity notebook.
1. Add the polynomials (3x2 - 6x + xy), (2x3 - 5x2 -3y) and (7x + 8y)
a. 2x3 - 8x2 + x + xy + 5y c. 2x3 - 2x2 - x + xy + 5y
b. 2x3 - 2x2 + x + xy - 5y d. 2x3 - 2x2 + x + xy + 5y
2. Subtract 2xy from −2xy.
a. 4xy b. xy c. 2xy d. – 4xy
3. Find the sum of (2x + 3x –5) and (3x + 7).
3 2 2
II. Find the sum and difference of the following polynomials. Look for the solution
to each item in the coded answers and write the corresponding letter on the line
above it.

ANSWER KEYS
LESSON 1 LESSON 2
LESSON 2
This self-learning kit explores addition and subtraction of polynomials. To add
polynomials, it is necessary to combine like terms. To combine like terms, the terms
must contain the same variables to the same powers.
To subtract polynomials, add the first polynomial and the negative (or
opposite) of the second polynomial.
