Week 3 Math Mis G8

This document provides an introduction to a self-learning kit on evaluating, adding, and subtracting polynomials. It is divided into three parts: an introduction, a lesson on evaluating algebraic expressions, and a lesson on adding and subtracting polynomials. The introduction explains the purpose and structure of the kit. The first lesson defines key terms like variables, constants, and terms, and explains how to evaluate algebraic expressions by substituting values. The second lesson defines polynomials and their types (monomial, binomial, trinomial), explains how terms are separated, and provides rules for adding and subtracting polynomials.

EVALUATING, ADDING

AND SUBTRACTING
POLYNOMIALS
for Mathematics Grade 7
Quarter 2 / Week 4
FOREWORD

This self-learning kit will serve as a guide on how to

evaluate algebraic expressions given values of the variables.
It will be your guide as you learn the step-by-step solutions. It
will be your aid as you learn new ideas and enrich your
existing knowledge about mathematical concepts and its
importance to real-life.
In this self-learning kit, the students will learn and gain
knowledge on how to evaluate algebraic expressions for
given values of the variables.

This kit is divided into three parts:

I. What Happened: This part will arouse your interest in
evaluating algebraic expressions. You will answer activities
that are new to you and this will also measure how far you
know about the topic.

II. What You Need to Know: This part is where the

discussion and explanation of the learning competency
takes place.

III. What Have I Learned: This part will measure how

much you learned about evaluating algebraic expressions

1. 2x + y – z 3. (y + z) – 24
2. 4x + 3y 4. 3x + 7y – 4z

4
II. WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
Remember
Variables are symbols or letters that may take one or more than one
values. These variables may represent elements of the set of real numbers.

Constants are numbers that have fixed values.

A Term can be a constant, a variable, a product or a quotient of

constants and variables. Terms are separated by addition (+) or
subtraction (–) sign.

An algebraic expression can be a variable, a constant, or a combination.

There should be at least one arithmetic operation.

DISCUSSION:
How is an algebraic expression evaluated?

To evaluate an algebraic expression is to find its numerical value

by substituting a given set of numbers in place of letters or variables.

Examples:

A. Evaluate 3x + 5, when x = 2.

Solution:
Remember 3x means 3 times x.
To evaluate the expression when x = 2,
We substitute 2 for x, and then simplify.

3x + 5
1. Substitute 2 for x. =3(2) + 5
2. Multiply. =6+5
3. Add. = 11

5
B. Evaluate a2 when a = 7

Solution:
We substitute 7 for a, and then simplify the expression
a2
1. Substitute 7 for a. = 72
2. Use the definition of exponent. = (7)(7)
3. Multiply. = 49

C. Evaluate (5y ÷ 3) + 2(y – 6) when y = 9.

Solution:
We substitute 9 for y, and then simplify the expression
(5y ÷ 3) + 2(y – 6)

1. Substitute 9 for y. = [5(9) ÷ 3] + 2(9 – 6)

2. Multiply 5 and 9 then = (45 ÷ 3) + 2(3)
subtract 6 from 9
3. Divide 45 by 3 and then = 15 + 6
multiply 2 and 3
4. Add = 21

Steps to follow in evaluating algebraic expressions:

1. Substitute the given values for each variable.

2. Simplify first the expression within the parenthesis.
3. Simplify the expressions with exponents.
4. Perform all indicated operations and simplify the final answer.

6

II. WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

Remember
A polynomial is an algebraic expression where all variables when expressed
in the numerator have nonnegative integral exponents.

The following are examples of polynomials:

2

Terms

Note: Algebraic terms are separated either by a plus or a minus sign.

The following are not polynomials:

Example Explanation

Not a polynomial because a term has a

5x-2 +1
negative exponent

Not a polynomial because a term has a

3x½ +2
fraction exponent

(5x +1) ÷ (3x) Not a polynomial because of the division

10
DISCUSSION:

How to add and subtract polynomials?

➢ We simply add and subtract any like terms together.

What is a like term?

➢ Like Terms are terms whose variables (and their exponents such as
the 2 in x2) are the same. In other words, terms that are "like"
each other. Note: the coefficients (the numbers you multiply by,
such as "2" in 2x) can be different.

Example of like terms:

8x2y 3x2y x2y 2x2y

➢ The literal coefficients x2y are all the same.

Example of NOT like terms:

2x2y 2xy2 2x2y2 2xy

➢ The literal coefficients are all different.

Adding Polynomials

Three Steps:
Step 1: Arrange each polynomial with the term with the highest
exponent first then in a decreasing order of exponents.

Step 2: Group the like terms. Like terms are terms whose variables
and exponents are the same.

Step 3: Simplify by combining like terms.

Example 1: Add 3x2 + 2x + 7 and x2 + 5x – 2

Start with: 3x2 + 2x + 7 + x2 + 5x – 2

Place like terms together: 3x2+x2 + 2x+5x + 7−2

Which is: (3+1) x2 + (2+5) x + (7−2)

11
Add the like terms: 4x2 + 7x + 5

Example 2: Add (2x2 + 6y + 3xy), (3x2 - 5xy - x) and (6xy + 5)

Line them up in columns and add:

2x2 + 6y + 3xy
3x2 - 5xy - x
6xy + 5

5x2 + 6y + 4xy - x + 5

Subtracting Polynomials

Steps:

1. Change the sign of the Subtrahend (in other words turn "+"
into "-", and "-" into "+"),

2. Then proceed to addition.

Example 1: Subtract x2y2 + 2x2y − 5xy2 from 3x2y − xy2 + 7x2y2

Start with: (3x2y − xy2 + 7x2y2) − (x2y2 + 2x2y − 5xy2)

Reverse the sign of the subtrahend: (3x2y − xy2 + 7x2y2) − x2y2 − 2x2y + 5xy2

Place like terms together: 3x2y − 2x2y − xy2 + 5xy2 + 7x2y2 − x2y2
Which is: (3 – 2)x2y + (-1+ 5)xy2 + (7−1)x2y2

Add the like terms: x2y + 4 xy2 + 6 x2y2

12

LESSON 1 LESSON 2

SYNOPSIS AND ABOUT THE AUTHOR

LESSON 1
Evaluating algebraic expressions is when you substitute a number for each
variable and then solve the expression. Usually, the trickiest part is remembering the
order of operations. For this we use PEMDAS. This stands for parentheses, exponents,
multiplication, division, addition, and subtraction.

LESSON 2
This self-learning kit explores addition and subtraction of polynomials. To add
polynomials, it is necessary to combine like terms. To combine like terms, the terms
must contain the same variables to the same powers.
To subtract polynomials, add the first polynomial and the negative (or
opposite) of the second polynomial.
