Lesson Plan

The document outlines a lesson plan on measures of central tendency for a 7th grade math class. The objectives are for students to determine the mean, median, and mode of statistical data and understand their real-world applications. Examples are provided to demonstrate calculating the mean, median, and mode of sample data sets. Students also complete a group activity where they collect and analyze age data to find the measures of central tendency. An evaluation includes sample test score data for students to analyze and answer questions about the mean, median, and mode. The lesson aims to teach students how to summarize and describe data using these common measures of central tendency.

A Semi-Detailed Lesson Plan in Measures of Central Tendency

I. Objectives: At the end of the session, the students must have

1. Determined the mean, median and mode,

2. solved the mean, median and mode of a given statistical data,

3. appreciated the value of mean median and mode in real situation.

II. Subject Matter: Measure of Central Tendency

References: Manalo C. et al. (2012). Next Century Mathematics 7

III. Lesson Proper

A. Motivation

Ask the students the following questions:

1. Have you ever experienced to compute the average of your grades for you wanted to
compare it with your other classmates’ grades? How did you compute it?
2. Have you ever experienced to check the papers of your classmates in a test, organizing
them, and knowing who will divide the results into two equal groups?
3. Have you ever experienced to determine your grade that you always encounter in your
report card?
4. Do you know that in these everyday experiences at school, we always encounter the
three measures of central tendency? Why do you say so?
B. Unlocking of Difficulties / Review of Pre requisite Knowledge

Reminding class that there are three measures of central tendency, first one is the mean.

1. Mean-is the most commonly used measure of central tendency. It is used to describe a set of
data where the measures cluster or concentrate at a point. It is found by adding the values of
the data and dividing by the total number of values.

It is given with the formula

Mean= X1+ X2+X3+...+Xn

Where:

X= is the values of given data

N=number of the values of x

2. Median - is the midpoint of the array. The median will be either a specific value or will fall
between two values.

3. Mode-it is the value that occurs most often in the data set. It is the value with the greatest
frequency.

C. Lesson Development ( discussion, activity, cooperative learning)

As said earlier, the mean is the average data of the given values. Then give a specific example.

First example:

80, 80, 83, 84, 85, 87, 88, 89, 90, 94

So from the formula given, let us now try to analyze and then substitute the given values to the
given formula.

Mean= X1+ X2+X3+...+Xn

N

= 80+80+83+84+85+87+88+89+90+98

10

Mean =86

Hence, the mean grade of the ten students is 86.

Moving on from mean, the teacher will give examples on midean.

First example:

Using the same data above. The math grades of ten students are 85, 80, 88, 83, 87, 89, 84, 80,
94, and 90. Find the median.

Solution:

To find the median, we need to arrange first the data in increasing order that is from least to
greatest or vice versa.

80, 80, 83, 84, 85, 87, 88, 89, 90, 94

Since the middle point falls halfway between 85 and 87, so in order to get the median, we need
get the mean of these two values.

Median= 85+87

Median= 172

Median = 86

Therefore, the median of the given data is 86.

There are three conditions that we have to consider in finding modes as follows;
1.) Select the measure that appears most often in the set.

2.) If two or more measures appear the same number of times, then each of these values is a
mode.

3.) If every measure appears the same number of times, then the set of data has no mode.

First example:

Using the same data above.

80,80,83,84,85,87,88,89,90,94

Since 80 is the value that most often occur in the given data, therefore 80 is the mode.

Second example:

79,79, 81, 83, 85, 85,87,90,91,95

Ask a student to answer it on the board.

Answer are:

Modes= 79 & 85

Group activity:

The teacher will ask the students to count of 1-3 to form 3 gruops from the class. Then they will
form a circle and assign a leader. They will collect the age of each of the member of the group
then find the mean, median and mode of the data they collected then present it on the class.

IV. Evaluation (Aligned to the objectives, include answers to the evaluation

Direction: Below are the scores of 20 Grade 8 students in their Pre-calculus first long term
exam. Analyze the given data and answer the question below. The teacher then write the data
and ask for a students to answer each of the following questions on the board.

9 10 10 12 12 13 14 15 16 16

16 16 16 17 19 20 20 22 23 27

1. What score is typical to the group of students?

Answer: 16

2. What score appears to be the median?

Answer: 16

3. Find the mean.

Answer: 16.15

V. Assignment/Agreement

Read in advance about analysing and illustrating conclusion from graphics and tabular
preseation. That will be our topic next meeting.
