III. Procedures
A. Motivation
The learners will say the 4-sided polygon that they observe inside their
classrooms. Example are blackboard, table, books and etc.
B. Lesson Proper
The word ‘quadrilateral’ is derived from the Latin word ‘quadri,’ which means four, and
‘latus’, which means side.
A quadrilateral is a polygon having four sides, four vertices, and four angles and the sum
of the interior angles is 360 degrees.
Quadrilaterals are named using consecutive vertices.
The symbol of a quadrilateral is □
A D
B C
The quadrilateral above could be named ABCD, BCDA, CDAB, DABC, DCBA,
CBAD, BADC, ADCB but not ACBD.
Sides, angles, and vertices that are next to each other in a quadrilateral are called consecutive.
The quadrilateral has vertices A, B, C, and D.
Vertices A and B, B and C, C and D, and D and A are consecutive vertices.
Vertices A and C, and B and D are opposite vertices.
Two sides of a quadrilateral that meet are called consecutive sides.
Two sides with common vertex, like ABand BC are consecutive sides.
Onthe other hand , AB and CD are opposite sides, so are ADand BC .
Both pairs of opposite sides are parallel and the symbol of parallel is ∥.
AB∥ CD and AD∥ BC .
Two sides with common vertex, like∠ A∧∠D are consecutive angles .
Onthe other hand ∠ A∧∠C are opposite angles , so are ∠B and ∠D.
Opposite angles are also congruent angles, meaning they are equal or have the same
measurement. Congruent is denoted by the symbol “≅”
∠ A ≅ ∠ C and ∠B ≅ ∠D
Line segments joining opposite vertices, like AC∧BD are called diagonals .
