Dear friends,

From my point of view, enough exercise and healthy food are very important to children.
Parents should be concerned about these things. If so, children will keep healthy, fit, and
happy. They will not easily suffer from sicknesses. In addition, they prevent the children
from being overweight. For example, a child who spends all day playing video games and
eating snacks all the time will become too fat. When children always eat junk food and sit
around watching television, they will have little energy for doing well in school. Please
share your opinion.

With love,

Taufik Samsuddin

10. What is the text about?

A. The way to keep happy.
B. The reason why children get overweight.
C. Parents’ guidelines to take care of their children.
D. The impact of junk foods and snacks on children’s health.
E. The importance of healthy food and exercise for children.
11. Why do playing video games and watching TV all day cause children to be
overweight?
A. Because the children will watch junk food advertisements on TV and play
games.
B. Because those activities will increase the children’s appetite.
C. Because children get less physical exercise.
D. Because they will not have enough nutrition.
E. Because children are still growing.
12. “In addition, they prevent the children from being overweight.”
What does the underlined pronoun refer to?
A. Parents.
B. Children.
C. Sickness.
D. Keeping fit, healthy, and happy.

Read the following text to answer questions 13 to 15.
Dear Teenz Magz,
I’d like to share my opinion regarding people’s perspectives on the strawberry
generation. Defined as young adults born between 1982 to 2002, Millennials are often
dismissed as “strawberries” who are unable to take hardships, narcissistic, and deeply self-
entitled. I agree with DPM Tharman that ageism and discrimination against older workers
are wrong but I do believe that our stance as a country against ageism should apply to the
youth as well.
After all, no generation is superior to another and each generation has its own set of
unique challenges. I often hear older people lamenting about how youngsters “can’t take
hardships” and “have it easy in life”.
I definitely acknowledge that the older generation had its own set of challenges.
However, it isn’t as easy for our generation too. When millennials enter the workforce, they
often have to work harder to compete with more graduates for entry-level jobs. The
proportion of university graduates in our society is increasing every single year. In 2020,
the proportion of graduates in Singapore is expected to be 40 percent.
Besides having to compete with more local graduates, Generation Y also has to
compete with foreign graduates who are sometimes often willing to accept lower pay. If
you look around you, you’d notice many fresh graduates who are foreigners working in
Singapore. This was not the case during Generation X time when the competition was
mostly local.
Given these circumstances, perhaps to get your first job back then, all you need is a
university degree. However, for my generation, a degree isn’t enough. To compete for good
jobs in today’s context, you also need a few internships at reputable companies;
international experience either through exchange or internships or both; awards or grants;
community service, and strong referrals from your professors.
Through this letter, I’d like to say that people should stop perceiving the millennials
as weak and effortless generations because we meet different challenges in our lives.

Regards,

Hermione Atun

13. The following which is not the thing that should be possessed by millennials to get
their first job is … .
A. internships at reputable companies
B. socialite community
C. international experience
D. awards
E. strong referrals from a professor
14. People often think that Millennials are … .
A. incapable to take hardships, dependent, and deeply self-entitled
B. reliable, confident, and deeply self-entitled
C. incapable of facing hardships, self-centered, and deeply self-entitled
D. independent, narcissistic, and deeply self-entitled
E. ignorant, self-centered, and deeply self-entitled
15. What is the main idea of the fourth paragraph?
A. Generation Y has to compete with more local graduates.
B. Foreign students are willing to be paid lower than generation Y.
C. Generation Y has to compete with both local graduates and foreign students.
D. If you look around, many students are foreigners working in Singapore.
E. During the time of generation X, there was no hard competition in job
seeking.

Named for the Roman goddess of dawn, the aurora is a mysterious and
unpredictable display of light in the night sky. The aurora borealis and aurora australis -
the northern lights and southern lights - are common occurrences at high northern and
southern latitudes.
The typical aurora is caused by collisions between fast-moving electrons from space
with the oxygen and nitrogen in Earth's upper atmosphere. The electrons ~ which come
from the Earth’s magnetosphere, the region of space controlled by Earth's magnetic field -
transfer their energy to the oxygen and nitrogen atoms and molecules, making them
“excited”. As the gases return to their normal state, they emit photons, small bursts of
energy in the form of light. When a large number of
electrons come from the magnetosphere to bombard the atmosphere, oxygen and nitrogen
can emit enough light for the eye to detect, giving us beautiful aurora displays. This ghostly
light originates at altitudes of 100 to more than 400 km.
The color of the aurora depends on which gas - oxygen or nitrogen - is being excited
by the electrons, and on how excited it becomes. The color also depends on how fast the
electrons are moving, or how much energy they have at the time of their collisions. High-
energy electrons cause oxygen to emit green light (the most familiar color of the aurora),
while low-energy electrons cause
red light. Nitrogen generally gives off blue light. The blending of these colors can also lead
to purples, pinks, and whites. The oxygen and nitrogen also emit ultraviolet light, which can
be detected by special cameras on satellites.
The different shapes of auroras are a mystery that scientists are still trying to
unravel. The shape seems to depend on where in the magnetosphere the electron
originates, what causes them to gain their energy, and why they dive into the atmosphere.

(Source: https://pwe.gsfc.nasa.gov)
16. What is the social function of the text?
A. To persuade the readers that aurora is a beautiful phenomenon.
B. To explain the process involved in the phenomena of aurora.
C. To tell the story behind the name of aurora.
D. To describe the characteristics of aurora.
E. To entertain the readers with the story behind the name of aurora.
17. What does affect the color of the aurora?
A. Electrons and gas.
B. Gas.
C. Nitrogen and oxygen.
D. Oxygen and electrons.
E. Electron, nitrogen, and oxygen
18. What can you infer from the last paragraph?
A. Scientists are still researching why aurora has different shapes.
B. The shape of the aurora depends on the origin of electrons in the
magnetosphere.
C. The different shapes of the aurora are what make it beautiful.
D. Scientists found three factors that shape auroras
E. Scientists do not need to conduct more research on auroras.
19. Which of the following sentence does show the material process?
A. “... the aurora is a mysterious and unpredictable display of light in the night
sky.”
B. “The oxygen and nitrogen also emit ultraviolet light …”
C. “The blending of these colors can also lead to purples, pinks, …”
D. “The different shapes of auroras are a mystery …”

Gossip. All humans partake in some form, despite the age-old adage, “If you have
nothing nice to say, don’t say anything at all.” Whether it’s workplace chatter, the sharing of
family news, or group texts between friends, it’s inevitable that everyone who talks, well,
talks about other people. A 1993 observational study found that male participants spent
55% of conversation time and female participants spent 67% of conversation time on “the
discussion of socially relevant topics.”
Some researchers argue that gossip helped our ancestors survive. Evolutionary
psychologist
Robin Dunbar first pioneered this idea, comparing gossip to the grooming primates engage
in as a means of bonding, Instead of picking fleas and dirt off one another to bond, Ludden
explains, we now talk, which is “where gossip comes in because chit-chat is mostly talking
about other people and conveying social information.”
Gossiping gives humans the ability to spread valuable information to very large
social networks. If we were not able to engage in discussions of social and personal issues,
we would not be able to sustain the kinds of societies that we do. Gossip in this broad sense
plays several roles in the maintenance of socially functional groups through time.
Some scholars view gossip as evidence of cultural learning, offering teachable
moments and providing people with examples of what's socially acceptable — and what's
not. For example, if there’s someone who cheats a lot in a community or social circle and
people start to talk about that person negatively, says Robbins, the collective criticism
should warn others of the consequences of cheating. And as word near-inevitably trickles
back to the source of said gossip, it can “serve to keep people in check, morally speaking,”
Robbins adds.
So, keep on talking without spreading a rumor. Gossiping can be something good if
you talk about nice things and valuable information.
20. The first paragraph of the text is called … .
A. general statement
B. thesis
C. orientation
D. newsworthy event
E. sequence of explanation
21. The following statement which is not true is … .
A. every human likes becoming involved in gossip
B. women gossip more than men
C. gossip can be means of cultural learning
D. our ancestors were helped to survive through gossip
E. valuable information is impossible to spread through gossip
22. Which of the following is a noun phrase?
A. Keep on
B. Who cheats
C. View gossip as
D. First pioneered

Bitcoin is an alternative type of payment system. It is a type of internet or digital
money. You can use it to do business outside mainstream financial services. Bitcoin is
basically digital cash. It works just like an online wallet. You can send money in your online
wallet to your friends, buy stuff online and offline, or even invest in it, as you would do with
stocks.
Bitcoin was created as a response to the criticism suggesting that big banks are
corrupt and not accountable, constantly misusing clients' money and charging enormous
fees. The creator of Bitcoin invented something that eliminates the middleman – or, in this
case, the bank - from financial exchanges. Because the Bitcoin system is decentralized, all
transactions are very transparent, so there is no corruption. The clients always know what
is going on and can control their own money.
A word often associated with Bitcoin is "blockchain", which is where all confirmed
transactions Bitcoin users make are placed as "blocks". More specifically, whenever a
"block", or a transaction, enters the online system, its validation is needed on the peer-to-
peer computer network. That means that all Bitcoin users are aware of every single block,
and this makes stealing or spending the same currency twice impossible. This is one of the
reasons why millions of people trust Bitcoin and see a very bright future ahead of it. All
transactions occur only between the buyer and the seller, with the help of private "keys", or
passwords, they come up with, and their electronic gadgets.
Here are some steps to do when someone wants to buy a bitcoin. At first, all new
users must install a virtual wallet onto their electronic devices. This wallet is like an online
bank account where all future transactions will be noted.
Next step, Bitcoin needs some real money which will be translated into a virtual
currency. This can be done through an online payment, a bank transfer, or a third-party
website. Once the funds are stored in the virtual wallet, the users should order bitcoins and
then use them as they please. This simple process is very similar to trading stocks, for
example.

23. What inspired the creation of bitcoin?

A. Corrupt politicians
B. Corruption in Microsoft
C. Corrupt banks
D. Corruption in online shops
E. Corrupt traders
24. Which statement is true based on the text above?
A. No validation is needed when bitcoin is used for a transaction.
B. People trust bitcoin because it is an alternative type of payment system.
C. The sellers and the buyers who use bitcoins do not need any passwords in
their transactions.
D. You need to have real money before you can purchase Bitcoins.
E. A virtual wallet is no longer needed when someone wants to use bitcoins as
the payment system.
25. Based on the text above, which of the following is passive voice?
A. “Bitcoin is an alternative type of payment system.”
B. “Bitcoin is basically digital cash.”
C. “Bitcoin was created as a response to the criticism ….”
D. “The clients always know what is going on ….”
E. “This simple process is very similar to trading stocks ….”
26. “The creator of Bitcoin invented something that eliminates the middleman ….”
The italic word in the sentence above can be best replaced by … .
A. eradicates
B. obscures
C. invents
D. blames
E. finds

Evaluating Your Personal Financial Statement
By Chizoba Morah
Month after month, many individuals look at their bank and credit card statements
and are surprised that they spent more than they thought they did. To avoid this problem,
one simple method of accounting for income and expenditures is to have personal financial
statements. Just like the ones used by corporations, financial statements provide you with
an indication of your financial condition and can help with budget planning. There are two
types of personal financial statements: personal cash flow statements and personal balance
sheets.
A personal cash flow statement is a statement that measures your cash inflows and
outflows in order to show you your net cash flow for a specific period of time. Cash inflows
generally include salaries, interest from savings accounts, dividends from investments, as
well as capital gain from the sale of financial securities like stocks and bonds. It can also
include money received from the sale of assets like houses or cars. Essentially, your cash
inflow consists of anything that brings in money. Meanwhile, cash outflow represents all
expenses, regardless of size. Cash outflows include rent or mortgage payments, utility bills,
groceries, gas, and entertainment (books, movie tickets, restaurant meals, etc.)
The purpose of determining your cash inflows and outflows is to find your net cash
flow. Your net cash flow is simply the result of subtracting your outflow from your inflow. A
positive net cash flow means that you earned more than you spent and that you have some
money left over from that period. On the other hand, a negative net cash flow shows that
you spent more money than you brought in.
Alongside this, the personal balance sheet is the second type of personal financial
statement. It provides an overall snapshot of your wealth at a specific period in time. It is a
summary of your assets (what you own), your liabilities (what you need to pay in each of
every period of time), and your net worth (assets minus liabilities).
If you currently have a negative cash flow or you want to increase positive net cash
flow, the only way to do it is to assess your spending habits and adjust them as necessary.
By using personal financial statements to become more aware of your spending habits and
net worth, you'll be well on your way to greater financial security.

27. Why do we need to evaluate our personal financial statements?

A. To avoid bank and credit card calls.
B. To provide wealth conditions.
C. To help with budget planning.
D. To secure our liabilities and assets.
E. To represent a healthy lifestyle.

outflows?
A. Early September Balance
B. Last September Balance

E. Neighbourhood Bond
29. Look at the table below, based on the explanation above, which one belongs to
liabilities?
A. Buy AC Remote
B. Fridge Service
C. Buy Hose
D. Manager Fee
E. Key Duplicates

A. This business has a positive net cash flow.
B. This business has a negative net cash flow.
C. This business struggles a lot.
D. This business needs to increase its wealth.

Ms. Kraft’s Class

Boeing Learning Center
Washington, D.C.

Dear Students,
Thank you for writing. Letters like yours mean a lot to me, and they remind me why
I ran for this Office in the first place.
Being President has been the greatest privilege of my life, and while my term is
coming to an end at the beginning of next year, that doesn't mean I'll stop fighting to make
sure doors of opportunity are wide open for you and your generation. That is a promise I
will never stop working to keep. And once I leave the White House, I'll be counting on
young people like you to step up and get involved because we all share a lasting
responsibility to bring about real and meaningful change that will make our Nation
stronger.
Wherever your talents and interests take you, always remember that nothing is
beyond your reach so as long as you are willing to dream big and work hard. America is
depending on students like you to build a brighter tomorrow, and I know there are no
limits to what you can achieve.
Thank you, again, for your kind note. Your generation gives me great hope for the
future, and I trust you'll stay engaged in our democracy.

Sincerely,
Barack Obama
