A. Inductance Calculations
1. Calculate the inductance of a 1φ circuit comprising of two parallel conductors of 6mm diameter spaced 1m
apart. Considering the material is
a) Copper with relative permeability (µr) of 1
b) Steel with relative permeability (µr) of 50.

2. Determine the inductive reactance of a 1φ 25 Hz, 16 km long transmission line which consists of a pair of
conductors of diameter 1.2 cam and spaced
a) 1.2 m apart
b) 60 cm apart

3. Find the GMR of a standard conductor having seven identical strands each of radius r as shown in the figure
below. Also find the ratio of GMR to overall conductor radius.

4. Calculate the inductance of a conductor/phase in a 3φ, 3Wire system. The conductors are arranged on
the corner of an equilateral triangle of 3.5 m sides and diameter of each conductor is 2 cm.

5. Calculate the inductance of a conductor/phase in a 3φ, 3Wire system. The conductors are arranged on
the corner of a triangle separated by 3.5 m, 3.5 m and 7 m respectively. The radius of each conductor
is 0.5 cm and the lines are a) untransposed b) regularly transposed.

6. Calculate the inductance/phase of a 750 kV three-phase single circuit line that utilises a bundled
conductor arrangement as shown in Fig. below. The space between the two phases is 15 m in a
horizontal formation. The sub-conductors of a phase are at the corners of a square of sides 0.5 m, each
sub-conductor has a diameter of 3 cm.

7. Calculate the inductance/phase and reactance/phase of a 3φ, 3Wire system 50Hz system having
conductors of 2.5 cm diameter considering a) Transposed regularly b) Untransposed. The distance
between the three phases is as shown in the figure below.

8. Calculate the inductance/phase of a 3φ, double circuit system as shown below. The conductor has 1.5
cm diameter considering.

B. Capacitance Calculations

9. A 3φ, 50 Hz, 66 kV overhead transmission line has its conductors arranged at the corners of an equilateral
triangle of 3m sides and the diameter of each conductor is 1.5 cm. Determine the Inductance/phase and
Capacitance/phase if the total line length is 100 km. Also calculate the charging current.

10. Calculate the capacitance of a 3φ, 3W system with triangular configuration with sides Dab = 3m, Dbc = 4m
and Dca = 5m. The diameter of the conductor is 2.5 cm and the permittivity of the conductor material is 150.

11. A 3φ, 50 Hz, 50 kV overhead transmission line has its conductors placed in a horizontal plane as shown in
figure below. The conductor diameter is 1.5 cm. If the line length is 100 km, calculate
a) Capacitance/phase/m b) Charging current/Phase

12. The conductors in a 1φ transmission line are 6m above the ground. Each conductor is 2cm in diameter and
the conductors are spaced 3.5m apart. Considering the effect of earth calculate the capacitance/km.

13. Calculate the capacitance/phase of a 3φ, 3W system by considering earth effect, when the conductors are
arranged in a horizontal plane with spacing Dab = Dbc = 3.5 m, Dca = 7 m. The conductors are transposed and
each has a diameter of 2 cm. The transmission lines are 4m above the ground level.

C. Short Line
14. A 220kV, 50 Hz, 3φ, 3W system having a transmission line of 50 km length. The resistance/phase is 0.15
Ω/km and the inductance/phase is 1.33 mH/km and the shunt capacitance is negligible. Use the Short
transmission line model to determine the following if the line is supplying a 3φ load of 400 MVA, 220 kV at
0.8 pf lag.

15. A 3φ, short transmission line has resistance/phase and reactance/phase of 4Ω and 6Ω respectively. The
sending end voltage and receiving end voltage are 110 kV and 100 kV respectively for a receiving end load
of 0.8 pf lag. Calculate a) Output power b) sending end power factor c) efficiency

16. A 1φ, 11 kV short transmission line of 15 km is to transmit 500 kVA. The inductive reactance of the line is
0.6 Ω/km and resistance is 0.25 Ω/km. Calculate the efficiency and regulation for the following power
factors:
a. 0.75 Lagging
b. 0.75 Leading
c. Unity

D. Medium Line

17. A three-phase transmission line of 160 kms has the following constants resistance/km is 0.15 Ω,
reactance/km is 0.6 Ω, line charging admittance/km is 8 x 10-6 Ʊ and the receiving end voltage is 66 kV
delivering 15 MW at 0.8 pf lag load at receiving end. Considering all the three model equivalents of medium
transmission line i.,e End condenser method, T and Pi equivalents, calculate the following:
a. ABCD parameters
b. Sending end current
c. Sending end voltage
d. Power factor at the sending end
e. Voltage regulation
f. Efficiency

18. A balanced three-phase load of 30 MW is supplied at 132 kV, 50 Hz and 0.85 pf lag by means of a medium
transmission line at its receiving end. The series impedance of a single conductor is (20 +j 40) Ω and the
total phase-neutral admittance is 315 x 10-6 Ʊ. Using both nominal π and T methods determine,
a. ABCD parameters
b. Sending end current
c. Sending end voltage
d. Power factor at the sending end
e. Voltage regulation
f. Efficiency

E. Long Line

19. A balanced three-phase load of 20 MVA is supplied at 110 kV, 50 Hz and 0.9 pf lag by means of a
transmission line at its receiving end. The line is 180 km long operating at 50 Hz frequency and has three
conductors each of 0.6 cm radius, spaced at the corners of the equilateral triangle of side 3 cm. The
resistance of each conductor is 0.2 Ω/km. Determine the following considering Long transmission line using
Rigorous method, nominal π and T methods:
a. ABCD parameters
b. Sending end current
c. Sending end voltage
d. Power factor at the sending end
e. Voltage regulation
f. Efficiency
