 PREFACE

All praises to Allah SWT due to the fact that our group was able to
complete our narrative text entitled “The Legend of Ulak Lia Lake”. We would like
to express our gratitude to our Teacher of English Mr. Abraham Gunadi, S.Pd.,
M.Pd. for his guidance in writing our narrative text. We also would like to express
our gratitude to Dinas Pemuda, Olahraga dan Pariwisata of Musi Banyuasin and
all the people of Musi Banyuasin for the support in completing our narrative text.
This narrative text discusses about the legend of Ulak Lia Lake as a
tourism object in Sekayu, Musi Banyuasin. There are two purposes of writing this
narrative text. The first purpose of writing this narrative text is to fulfill the English
project assignment for the competency of writing a narrative text and the second
purpose is to find out the information about the legend of Ulak Lia Lake.
We realize that this English project assignment is still far from being
perfect. Therefore, our group expects any critics, suggestions and corrections
from the readers for the perfectness of this paper.

THE LEGEND OF ULAK LIA LAKE

Ulak Lia Lake is located in Soak Baru Village, Sekayu District, precisely located
opposite Sekayu City which is ± 2.5 KM away, with an area of ± 75 Ha. To reach
the location of the lake, the transportation is quite smooth and can be reached by
road with a travel time of ± 20 minutes. The panorama of this lake is quite
beautiful surrounded by shady trees and an unspoiled atmosphere.

In the rainy season this lake will look more beautiful because of the high tide of
the Musi River and inundate the entire surface of this lake. Ulak Lia Lake is a
tourist attraction that will become the mainstay of Musi Banyuasin Regency
because it is located not far from the center of Sekayu City.

The lake area has a strategic location, because the distance from the city center
can be reached about 3 km, which is located on the edge of Jalan Sekayu-
Pendopo-Muara Enim It is not known for sure the origin of the name “Ulak Lia”.
However, according to information gathered from several local natives, Ulak
means whirlpool, while Lia is a girl who died in a whirlpool. It is said that as a
result of this incident local residents gave the name of the lake with Lake Ulak Lia.
In general, the topography in most of the lake area is lowland land that is
inundated by tidal water. The area of the lake’s core waters with an area of 50
hectares is the lowest part, so this area is always inundated with water throughout
the year.

According to the legend of the Sekayu community, the name Lake Ulak Lia comes
from the name of a girl whose nickname was “Lia” when she took a bath, while
Ulak means whirlpool, so it can be interpreted as the whirlpool of the lake that
washed away the girl named Lia. Some people believe and some don’t with this
legend, maybe it was true that there was an incident in the past so this lake was
named Ulak Lia lake. But so far the whirlpool doesn’t seem to exist, whether it
was ancient times.

The specialty of this lake as an object and a tourist attraction, especially for the
physical uniqueness of the lake waters which has a shape resembling a
“horseshoe”. This unique shape is probably caused by the sedimentation process
of the Musi River flow in the past. However, the unique shape of the lake’s waters
can only be seen at certain times, it cannot be seen throughout the year because
it is very dependent on the hydrology of the area.

This condition also affects the arrival of visitors who mostly come from young
people. Some of the huts that were established were used for joking while
enjoying the natural scenery. Visitors don’t stop coming because even though the
dry season, this lake still survives with clear water discharge.

This incident occurred in the year -+1928 AD in the hamlet of SUAK / Gangsiran
long there lived a beautiful girl named MALIA (Lia) BT Marhan Bin Samat Bin
Jaid, because her beauty made Bujang (Youth) Hamlet put a lot of heart on her,
until one day there the person who wants to marry Lia, the person is named Mat
Jitu / Mat Bengkok Bin Jamak, but unfortunately Lia doesn’t have a heart for him.

Strictly Matt:

“Lia alangke rengke nia review, nia is beautiful like an angel, fierce isn’t it sekire’n
you want to be my wife?”

Lia:

“I’m sorry... I’m not good at taking care of my master”

Strictly Matt:

“That means you don’t reject me Lia,...remember Lia, you won’t regret refusing
Mat Jitu ughang gek The Most Succeeding in the village of Ikak,...remember that
Lia (Threatening)”

Fuck lia.

After that incident, Jitu Meets a Great Shaman, he intends to
Witch doctor :

“I know what I’m going to do, I suggest that you sue another girl... he’s not fierce
with an ughang with a lecherous character, is it offensive?”

Strictly Matt:

“If you’re really not fierce, help me, witch Lia, make the crew itchy, lots of tinea
versicolor, kidding, bad smelling smallpox!

Witch doctor :

“Hmm, why didn’t he think carefully about that??”

Strictly Matt:

“La dem, bear it, do it, my grandpa will be expensive if he succeeds”

Witch doctor :

“O ruler of the realm of darkness... demons are evil, genderuwo.. so when Lia’s
crew is rotten, there are lots of phlegm (saying Mantras), mika balekla... what’s
wrong with what I do..”

Mat Jitu: “Love”

Because of Malia’s rejection of love, Santet all over his body arose a disease such
as a foul-smelling smallpox so that the residents felt disturbed and drove Lia out
of Suak Hamlet, so with sadness Lia’s father and mother evacuated Lia precisely
on the edge of the lake, that’s where he was exiled to live alone with the disease
he carried.

Marhan:

“My son Lia apologizes to Umak Serte Bak naw,..it’s not our intention to kick out
dai umah and hamlet Ikak, but for the sake of goodness, I’m afraid that the
community will be angry and kill the kitek and her family, so we agreed to go to
Parak Lake, if he gets better, we will definitely pick up my son

Lia:

“Umak,..Bak, if it’s for the good of the geeky kitk, Lia Rela lives happily there.”

Hearing the news that Lia was evacuated from the village of Mat Jitu was so
happy, what did she do?

Strictly Matt;

“Lia,..haha...ha.ha..asekke lia mikak isn’t suek anymore, gek linjang is cold, ribang

My heart hears the news ikak..”

Days have turned into days, months, even years have passed but Lia’s illness has
not healed, she is so desperate she can’t stand her suffering anymore.

Lia:

“O ruler of the lake, help me, as if I can’t stand the cold anymore, I’d rather die...”

Then a large golden yellow crocodile appeared, he was the incarnation of the
guardian of the lake. Seen from a distance there were people fishing to see the
incident, he saw Lia being eaten by Crocodiles and carried to the bottom of the
lake, he rushed to inform Lia’s family that he had been caught. Eat Crocodile, the
whole community and their families go to the lake.

Sarimon(Malia’s mother): “Sis, gek, you want to... my son is dead, you are
gloomy, you must be happy, right??”

Public :

“(Looks regretful) if it happened to be cak ikak, we are sorry, we didn’t think about
if mikak ended up, while Lia was good with us, but because the crew is rotten, we
are afraid that the disease will spread to other people.”

Marhan:

“Cempedak leaves can become Cempedak Leaves, it can’t be fire, don’t worry
about it

Again, he’s as good as God arranged.”
