Leptospirosis
Is a bacterial disease caused by Leptospira that affects humans and
animals. The most common way you can get infected is urine or contaminated
water getting in your eyes, nose, mouth, or broken skin (such as a cut or
scratch). You can also get infected by eating contaminated food or drinking
contaminated water.
Prevention and control
of leptospirosis
The College of Public Health (CPH) of the University of the Philippines Manila (UPM)
collaboration with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), Kyushu University (KU),
the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Department of Science and Technology
(DOST),started a 5-year program on the Prevention and Control of Leptospirosis (LepCon) in
the Philippines last April 1, 2010.
The purpose of this projects aims:
1. Determine the incidence of leptospirosis in people, livestock, and wild rodents in the
Philippines.
2. Develop a diagnostic kit and vaccine.
3. Disseminate information and educate people to prevent the spread of leptospirosis
SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS

CHILLS RASHES NAUSEA, VOMITING JAUNDICE


AND DIARRHEA
MEDICAL MANAGEMENT

The DOH workers works with different barangay


officials just to implement this Prevention and control
of Leptospirosis within the community, wherein the
goal includes:

1. Health teaching
2. Free physical examination / consultation
3. Medication ( doxycycline or penicillin)

Prevention and Control:


Avoid swimming or wading in potentially
contaminated water or flood water.
Use of proper protection like boots and gloves
when work requires exposure to contaminated
water.
Drain potentially contaminated water when
possible.
Control rats in the household by using rat traps
or rat poison, maintaining cleanliness in the
house.

HEALTH TEACHING

1. PROVIDE EDUCATION TO CLIENTS


2. USE OF PROPER PROTECTION (BOOTS AND GLOVES).
3. DRAIN POTENTIALLY CONTAMINATED WATER WHEN POSSIBLE.
4. CONTROL RATS IN THE HOUSEHOLD (RAT TRAPS OR RAT POISON, MAINTAINING CLEANLINESS IN
THE HOUSE).

MANAGEMENT

1. ISOLATE THE PATIENT AND CONCURRENT DISINFECTION OF SOILED ARTICLES.


2. STRINGENT COMMUNITY-WIDE RAT ERADICATION PROGRAM. REMOVE RUBBISH FROM WORK AND
DOMESTIC ENVIRONMENT TO REDUCE THE RODENT POPULATION.
3. REPORT ALL CASES OF LEPTOSPIROSIS.
4. INVESTIGATION OF CONTACTS AND SOURCE OF INFECTION
5. CHEMOPROPHYLAXIS CAN BE DONE IN A GROUP OF HIGH-RISK INFECTED HOSTS.
