This document provides a guide to open scale positions and 7 movable scale positions for fingerstyle guitar. It explains that the positions are named based on the string and finger used to fret the lowest root note. Diagrams then show the fretting pattern for the fingers in each major scale position, noting any required finger stretches. The goal is to allow playing scales across the entire fretboard.

Scale Position Guide

7 Movable Scale Positions

There are 7 scale positions that will allow you to play any scale across the
fretboard. Before diving in, there are certain fingering guidelines that you
must follow when playing these scale positions.

Guidelines

Naming:

There are two components in naming each position: the string number
and finger number used to fret the lowest root note.

Fingering:

For each of the 7 positions, there are fixed frets allocated to each
respective finger on the left hand.

In the scale diagrams to follow, the

4 fingers of the left hand each are to
play the 4 frets as shown.

The 1st (index) and 4th (little) fingers

are allowed to stretch one fret
above and below their allocated
positions as required.
