Masonry Works

This document provides instructions for estimating the quantity of concrete hollow blocks (CHB) needed for masonry construction projects. It explains how to calculate the wall area, deduct openings, and multiply by the standard factor of 12.5 blocks per square meter to determine the total number of CHB blocks required. Sample problems demonstrate applying this area method to compute block quantities for walls of different sizes and configurations. Reinforcement requirements are also estimated based on the total block count. The summary provides essential details on the CHB estimating methodology in 3 sentences or less.

Estimating Concrete Hollow

Blocks

Prepared by: CDS 1

CHB is manufactured
varies on sizes, textures
and strength for various
needs and convenience
in masonry construction.

Stretcher CHB are the

most commonly made as
non load bearing
partition, load bearing
walls, retaining walls for
buildings and other
structure.

Prepared by: CDS 2

How to Determine the Correct
Measurements of CHB Walls
The length to be used in computing the area of concrete hollow
blocks walls should not included columns and post along the walls.

The height of the walls should include concrete blocks buried in the
ground or foundation.

Structural members like beams, girders, etc. on CHB walls should be

excluded from the calculations for the height of the wall.

Deduct the areas of openings like windows, doors, or other kinds of

materials from the grass area of CHB wall to get its net area.

The height of the walls should include concrete blocks buried in the
ground or foundation.

Prepared by: CDS 3

HOW TO ESTIMATE THE QUANTITY OF CHB FOR
YOUR CONCRETE WALL:

The easiest way to estimate CHB quantity is by

the Area Method. A piece of standard
concrete hollow block (CHB) has a surface
area of 0.08 m2. In accordance to this, a one
square meter area will require 12.5 pcs of CHB.

1.00 m2 / 0.08 m2 = 12.5 pcs of CHB

Prepared by: CDS 4

HOW TO ESTIMATE THE QUANTITY OF CHB FOR
YOUR CONCRETE WALL:

1. Determine your initial wall area:

Determine the area of your wall. The formula for a

square wall is Length * Height.

Square Wall Area = Length * Height

2. Make sure to take into consideration the often

overlooked information that will affect the area of
your wall – for example, the depth of your beam
or the underground foundation CHB.

Prepared by: CDS 5

HOW TO ESTIMATE THE QUANTITY OF CHB FOR
YOUR CONCRETE WALL:

3. Get your total wall area:

Subtract your total openings with the initial area of

your wall.

Total Wall Area = Initial Wall Area – Total Wall

Opening Area

4. Multiply your total wall area by 12.5, the number

of pieces needed for a 1m2 wall:

No. of CHB = Total Wall Area x 12.5

Prepared by: CDS 6

SOLUTION

1. Determine your initial wall area: Sample Problem No. 1

Square Wall Area = Length * Height Compute for the

= 5.00 m * 3.00 m quantity of 8” concrete
= 15 m2
hollow blocks (CHB)
needed for a wall that
2. Determine door and window areas: is 3.00 meters high and
5.00 meters long with a
Door Area = 2.10 m * 0.60 m door that is 2.10 meter
= 1.26 m2
high and 0.60 meter
Window Area = 1.00 m * 0.60 m wide and a window
= 0.60 m2 that is 0.60 meter wide
and 1.00 meter high.
Total Opening Area = 1.26 m2 + 0.60 m2
= 1.86 m2
Prepared by: CDS 7
SOLUTION

3. Get your total wall area: Sample Problem No. 1

Total Wall Area = Initial Wall Area – Total Wall Opening Compute for the
Area quantity of 8” concrete
= 15.00 m2 – 1.86 m2
= 13.14 m2
hollow blocks (CHB)
needed for a wall that
is 3.00 meters high and
4. Multiply your total wall area by 12.5, the number of 5.00 meters long with a
pieces needed for a 1.00 m2 wall: door that is 2.10 meter
No. of CHB = 13.14 m2 * 12.5
high and 0.60 meter
= 164.25 pcs of CHB wide and a window
say 165 pcs. of CHB that is 0.60 meter wide
and 1 meter high.

Sample Problem No. 2

Two-Storey Residential Building

Given Data:

6 sets - 0.80 m x 2.20 m Doors

6 sets – 2.40 m x 1.30 m Windows
0.60 m below the NGL
0.60 m from NGL to FFL
3.60 m from FFL to FFL (2nd flr)
3.30 m FFL (2nd flr) to Top of RB1
C1 = 0.25m x 0.25 m
FTB = 0.20m x 0.40 m
B1 = 0.20m x 0.40 m
RB = 0.15m x 0.30 m

Prepared by: CDS 9

SOLUTION

1. Determine the perimeter of the wall:

P = (4.00m - 0.25m) x 6 = 22.5 m

P = (4.50m - 0.25m) x 4 = 16.00 m
P = 38.50 m

Sample Problem No. 2

Two-Storey Residential Building 2. Determine the Area 1 (below the NGL):

Given Data:
A1 = 38.50 m x 0.60
6 sets - 0.80 m x 2.20 m Doors
6 sets – 2.40 m x 1.30 m Windows A1 = 23.10 m2
0.60 m below the NGL
0.60 m from NGL to FFL
3.60 m from FFL to FFL (2nd flr) 3. Determine the Area 2 [NGL to FFL (GF)]:
3.30 m FFL (2nd flr) to Top of RB1
C1 = 0.25m x 0.25 m
FTB
B1
= 0.20m x 0.40 m
= 0.20m x 0.40 m
A2 = 38.50 m x (0.60 - 0.40 FTB)
RB = 0.15m x 0.30 m A2 = 7.70 m2

Prepared by: CDS 10

SOLUTION

4. Determine door and window areas:

Door Area = 2.20 m x 0.80 m

= 1.76 m2 (6 sets)
= 10.56 m2

Sample Problem No. 2 Window Area = 2.40 m x 1.30 m

= 3.12 m2 (6 sets)
Two-Storey Residential Building
= 18.72 m2
Given Data:

6 sets - 0.80 m x 2.20 m Doors

6 sets – 2.40 m x 1.30 m Windows
0.60 m below the NGL
Total Wall Opening Area = 10.56 m2 + 18.72 m2
0.60 m from NGL to FFL = 29.28 m2
3.60 m from FFL to FFL (2nd flr)
3.30 m FFL (2nd flr) to Top of RB1
C1
FTB
= 0.25m x 0.25 m
= 0.20m x 0.40 m
5. Determine the Area 3 (GF FFL to Top of RB):
B1 = 0.20m x 0.40 m A3 = 38.50 m x (6.90 m - 0.40 B1 - 0.30 RB1)
RB = 0.15m x 0.30 m
A3 = 238.70 m2 - 29.28 m2 (area for D & W)
A3 = 209.42 m2
Prepared by: CDS 11
SOLUTION

6. Total Area = A1 + A2 + A3
Total Area = 23.10 + 7.70 + 209.42 sq.m
Total Area = 240.22 sq.m

7. Total No. of CHB = 240.22 sq.m x 12.5

Total No. of CHB = 3002.75 say 3003 pcs
Sample Problem No. 2

Two-Storey Residential Building

Given Data:

6 sets - 0.80 m x 2.20 m Doors

FTB = 0.20m x 0.40 m
B1 = 0.20m x 0.40 m
RB = 0.15m x 0.30 m
