These vapours can be sucked through the air intake system and cause engine acceleration and over-speeding, which can result in fire, an explosion and extensive property damage. Numerous safety devices are available, such as air intake shut-off devices, to minimise the risk of over-speeding where an engine, due tots application, can operate in a combustible environment, such as due to a fuel spi or gas leak. Cummins Engine Company has NO way of knowing the use you have for your engine. THE EQUIPMENT OWNER AND OPERATOR ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR SAFE OPERATION IN A HOSTILE ENVIRONMENT. CONSULT YOUR CUMMINS AUTHORISED REPAIR LOCATION FOR FURTHER INFORMATION. Normal Starting Procedures Midrange Engines (B & C Series) Foot off throttle (the EP-9 with RSV governor and A, MW, P-pumps with RSV governor pump has a ‘Start Spring” which, automatically moves the rack to the start fuel position) Disengage the driven unit, or if equipped, put the transmission in neutral Position the fuel shut-off, electrical switch or mechanism control to the run position. With Bosch in-line pumps, fully depress the throttle AFTER engaging the starter. NOTE: Industrial engines are equipped with Robert Bosch ASV governors which automatically position the internal pump Controls to the START position for maximum fuel delivery when the throttle is set to idle. It the engine does not start after three (3) attempts, check the fuel supply system. Absence of blue or white exhaust smoke during cranking indicate no fuel is being delivered. Move the throttle position to idle as soon as the engine starts, Section 1 - Operating Instructions Generic Page 1-3 Heavy Duty/High Horsepower Engines (L10, M11, N14, K Series, V Series, Q Series) Disengage the driven unit, or if equipped, put the transmission into neutral Start the engine with the throttle in the idle position. Acaution A To prevent damage to the starter, do not engage the starting motor more than 30 seconds. Wait two (2) minutes between each attempt to start (electrical starting motors only). NOTE: Engines equipped with air starters require a minimum af 480 kPa. The engine must have adequate oll pressure within 15 seconds after starting. If the warning light indicating low oil pressure has not gone out or there is no oil pressure on a gauge within 18 seconds, shut off the engine immediately to avoid engine damage. Confirm the correct oil level in the oil pan. Idle the engine for 3 to § minutes before operating with a load Increase the engine speed (RPM) slowly to provide adequate lubrication to the bearings, and to allow the oil pressure to stabilize. Acaution A Do not keep the engine at low idle for long periods. Long periods at low idle, more than 10 minutes, can damage an engine because combustion chamber temperatures drop so low the fuel will not burn completely. This will cause carbon to build up around the injector spray holes and piston rings and can cause valve to stick. I the engine coolant temperature becomes too low, below 60°C (140°F), raw fuel will wash the lubricating oil off the cylinder walls and dilute the crankcase oll. Fuel dilution adversely affects lubricating oll properties and can shorten engine life. Utilize the fast idle to prevent these conditions. Cold Weather Star Operating Aids AcautionA Do NOT use starting fluid if using grid heaters. 7! cause an intake manifold explosion. Set the throttle at idle. Disengage the driven unit, or if equipped, put the transmis: sion into neutral Activate the switch to open the fuel pump shut-off valve. While cranking the engine, inject a metered amount of starting fluid Engine oil pressure must be indicated on the gauge within 15 seconds of starting Ether Starting Aids Awarninca Starting fluid contains ether and is extremely flammable. Misuse or mishandling can cause an explosion. NEVER handle starting fluid near an open flame. NEVER use starting fluid with a preheater, glow plug, flame thrower or other type of electrical starting equipment. Do NOT use volatile cold starting aids in underground mine or tunnel operations due to the potential of an explosion. Due to increased safety hazards and potential for engine damage, Cummins does not recommend the use of starting fluid without metering equipment. Section 1 - Operating Instructions Generic Page 1-4 Cold Weather Operation Its possible to operate diesel engines in extremely cold environments if they are properly prepared and maintained. Most failures give an early warning. Look and listen for changes in performance, sound, or engine appearance that can indicate service or engine repair is needed. Some changes to look for are as follows: + Engine Mistires ~ Excessive vibration + Unusual engine noises Excossive smoke Loss of power ‘An increase in oil ~ Sudden changes in engine consumption operating temperature or ‘An increase in fuel pressure ‘consumption = Fuel, ol, or coolant leaks Engine Operating Range AcauTionA Do not operate the engine at excessive full throttle ‘operation below peak torque rpm (refer to engine dataplate for peak torque rpm) for more than 30 sec- ‘onds. This condition will shorten engine life to over- haul, can cause serious engine damage, and is consid- ‘ered engine abuse. ‘Cummins engines are designed to operate successfully at {ull throttle under transient conditions down to peak torque engine speed. This is consistent with recommended operating practices. Operation of the engine below peak torque rpm can occur during gear shifting due to the differences of ratios between transmission gears, but the engine operation must not be sustained more than 30 seconds at full throttle below peak torque rpm. Section 1 - Operating Instructions. Generic Engine Shut-down General Information 1. Allow the engine to idle 3 to § minutes before turning it oft after a full load operation. This allows adequate cool down of pistons cylinders, bearings, and turbocharger components. 2. Turn the ignition key switch to the 'OFF" position. NOTE: Manual Fuel Shutoff Thumb Screw (if applicable) if engine continues to run after switch is turned to off, rotate the manual fuel shutoff thumb screw counterclockwise to make sure the valve is not being held open by the manual override screw, Power Takeoff Application with Variable Speed Controls ‘The variable speed governor on power takeott applications is used to control engine speed at the desired rpm. To engage the variable speed governor withthe engine idling on standard throt: * Put the variable speed control lever (2) in the idle positon. + Lock the standard throttle lever (1) in the full open position * Adjust the variable speed control lever (2) to the speed desired To return to standard throttle operation: ‘+ Roturn the standard throttle lever (1) to the idle position + Lock the variable speed control lever (2) in the maximum speed position Idle 3.70 5 MINUTES Page 1-8 sTc Advanced Normal Starting ard High Load Light Load ‘CAUTION 0 NoT TAMPER, (Of READJUST Section 1 - Operating Instructions Generic Step Timing Control (STC) ‘Some engine models are equipped with step timing control (STC), formally called Hydraulic Variable Timing (HVT). STC. allows the engine to operate in advanced injection timing immediately ater star-up and light duty engine load conditions, and to return to normal timing during medium and high engine load conditions. Benefits include: + Improves cold weather idling characteristic. + Reduced cold weather white smoke + improved tight oad tuel economy Acaution A Do not attempt to bypass or otherwise tamper with the STC oll control valve or plumbing. This will loss of both fuel economy and ens valve operation is necessary to maintain acceptable cylinder pressures and temperatures, and to yield optimal fuel economy during high-load operation. Correct operation is also necessary to control white smoke at idle, When operating in the advanced mode, a light ticking noise can be noted al the overhead. This sound is normal, and is caused by the actuation of the STC hydraulic tappets during each injection cycle, For optimat white smoke control on STC equipped engines do not increase engine speed above idle during engine start-up until sufficient oll pressure reaches the STC tappets to shift all injectors into the advanced timing mode. Page 1-17 Connection Section 1 - Operating Instructions Page 1-18 Generic Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) General Information Some diesel engine applications utilize accessories (CB radios, mobile transmitters, and so forth) that generate and use radio frequency energy which, i not installed and used properly, can cause electromagnetic interference (EMI) conditions to exist between the accessory and the Cummins electronically controlled fuel system. Cummins is not lable for any performance problems with either the fuel system or the accessory due to EMI. EMI is not considered by Cummins to be an engine fallure and therefore is not warrantable System EMI Susceptibility Your Cummins product has been designed and tested for minimum sensitivity to incoming electromagnetic energy. Testing has shown that there is no engine performance degradation at relatively high energy levels; however, if very high energy levels ate encountered, then some noncritical diagnostic fault code logging can occur. The fuel system EMI susceptibility level will protect your engine from most, if not all, electromagnetic energy emitting devices that meet the FCC legal requirements ‘System EMI Radiation Levels Your Cummins product has been designed and tested to emit minimum electromagnetic energy. Testing has shown that the fuel system, when properly installed on vehicles, meets or exceeds by a wide margin Part 15 of the FCC rules and SAE J1551 specifications. Other accessories should be designed with the proper filtering to reject electromagnetic noise emission from their system. Experience has shown that the control system on vehicles will not interfere with on-board communication equipment for urban and suburban background electromagnetic noise levels; however, the system, if used with accessories which are not installed properly or do not utilise adequate filtering designs, can interfere with onboard communications equipment in rural applications where background radio frequency noise levels are very low. It an interference condition is observed, follow the suggestions below to reduce the amount of interference: 1. Locate the receiving antenna as far away from the engine and as high as possible 2. Locate the receiving antenna as far away as possible trom all metal obstructions (exhaust stacks, and so forth) 3. Consult a representative of the accessory supplier in your area to: ~ Calibrate the device accurately for proper frequency, power output, and sensitivity (both base and remote site devices must be properly calibrated) Obtain antenna reflective energy dala measurements to determine the optimum antenna location Obtain optimum antenna type and mounting arrangement for your application Make sure your accessory equipment model is bull for maximum filtering to reject incoming electromagnetic noise. This mixture can cause an explosion. Cummins Engine Company, Inc. recommends the use of ASTM No. 2 diesel fuel, The use of No. 2 diesel fuel will result in optimum engine performance. At operating temperatures below 0° C (32° F), acceptable performance can be obtained by using blends of No. 2 D and No. 1 D. The use of lighter fuels can reduce fuel economy, The viscosity of the fuel must be kept above 1.3 cSt to provide adequate fuel system lubrication For a more detailed description of tuel properties, refer to Fuel For Cummins Engine, Bulletin No, 3379001. See ordering information in the back of this manual Lubricating Oil Recommendations and Specifications The use of quality engine lubricating oils combined with appropriate oil crain and filter change intervals is a critical factor in ‘maintaining engine performance and durabilly This manual does not cover vehicle or equipment maintenance procedures. Consult the vehicles or equipment manulacturer for specific maintenance recommendations. Cummins Engine Company, Inc. recommends the use of high quality SAE 15W-40 heavy duly engine oll which meets the American Petroleum Institute (API) performance catagories CF-4, CG-4, CF4/SG or CGA/SH, NOTE: CCICD or CD/SF engine olls can be used in areas where the above listed oils are not available. A sulphate ash content of 1.0 to 1.5 mass percent will yield optimal control of valve and piston deposit and will minimise oil consumption. The sulphate ash must not exceed 1.85 mass percent For further details and discussions of engine lubricating oils for Cummins engines, refer to Cummins Engine Oli Recommendations, Bullating No. 3810340, and Use of CE Engine Oils in Cummins Engines, Bulletin No. 3810375, NOTE: 8 & © Series engines must use an oil with an SG or SH rating for lubrication of the sliding tappets. Coolant Recommendations and Specifications Heavy duty engines require a heavy duty coolant. Heavy duty coolant is defined as a correct mixture of good quality water, low silicante antifreeze and supplemental coolant aduitives (SCA's), NOTE: Supplement coolant additives are not required for 8 series engines. Antifreeze Concentration Cummins/Fleetguard recommends using a low silicate antifreeze that meats ASTM 04885 specifications. Cooling System Sealing Additives Do not use sealing adsitves in the cooling system. The use of sealing additives wil * bulla up in cootant low flow areas. + clog coolant filers * plug radiator and oil cooler Cooling System Soluble Oils Do not use soluble oils in the cooling system. The use of soluble oils wil + allow eylinder liner pitting + corrode brass and copper + damage heat transfer surtaces * damage seals and hoses Section V - Maintenance Specifications Drive Belt Tensions Generic Page V-3 Drive Belt Tensions ‘SAE Bolt Size | Belt Tension Gauge Part No. It Tension New Belt Tension Used" Clicktype Burroughs N ot N lt 0.380 in 3822528 620 140 27010 480 010110 odoin 822524 620 140 270 to 490 6010110 129 820524 sT1138, 620 140 27010 480 6010110 1176 in 3822528 sT-1138, 620 140 27010 490 6010110 314 in 3822528 sT-1138 620 140 27010 490 6010110 71816 3822528 sT-1138, 620 140 27010 490 6010110 4m 3822524 sT-1138 620 140 27010 490 6010110 sr 3822528 sT-1138 670 150 27010530 6010 120 6rib 9822525 sT-1293 no 160 29010 580 65 10 190 ero 3822825, sT-1293 890 200 36010 710 8010 160 10 3820825, 3823138 1110 250 44010 880 100 to 200, 120 3822525, 3823138 1330 300 530 t0 1070, re0ot020 | 12 ri K section 3822525, 3823138 1330 300 89010 1070 200 to 240 NOTE: This chart does no! apply to automatic belt tensioners, * Abelt is considered used if it has been in service for ten minutes or longar. * If used belt tension is less than the minimum value, ighten the belt to the maximum used belt value.
