COULOMB’S LAW
1. The electrostatic force between charges of 200μC and 500μC placed in free space is 5gf. Find the
distance between the two charges.
2. Two point charges +9e and +1e are kept at a distance of 16 cm from each other. At what point
between these charges, should a third charge q to be placed so that it remains in equilibrium?
3. Two insulated charged spheres of charges 6.5 × 10 −7C each are separated by a distance of 0.5m.
Calculate the electrostatic force between them. Also calculate the force (i) when the charges are
doubled and the distance of separation is halved. (ii) when the charges are placed in a dielectric
medium water (ε r = 80)
4. How far apart two protons be if the electrostatic force exerted by one on the other is equal to weight
of the electron.
5. Two small balls, each carrying charge +q are connected by a non-conducting string of length l.
Calculate the tension in the string.
6. Two point charges q2 = 3×10-6 C and q1 = 5×10-6 C are located at (3,5,1) and (1,2,3)m. Find 𝐹⃗ and
𝐹⃗ using vector form of coulomb’s law and also find their magnitude.

in vacuum is 0.1N. Calculate the force on the second sphere due to the first and also the distance
between the two spheres.
8. Two positive point charges which are 0.1 m apart repel each other with a force of 18 N. If the sum of
the charge be 9 μC, calculate their separate values.

C respectively.
11. Two-point charges of +5 x 10-19C and +20 x 10-19C are separated by a distance of 2 m. find the point
on the line joining them at which electric field intensity is zero.
12. When a test charge q0 = 2 n C is placed at the origin, it experiences a force of 8.0 x 10-4 N in the
positive y-direction. What is the electric field at the origin? What would be the force on a charge – 4
n C placed at the origin?
13. Calculate the electric field strength required just to support a water drop of mass 10 -7 kg and having
a charge 1.6 x 1019C.
14. Two electric charges + q and + 4 q are placed at a distance of 6a on a horizontal plane. Find the locus

point at a distance 10cm from their middle point.

TORQUE AND POTENTIAL ENERGY

torque of 9×10-26 N-m. Calculate the dipole moment of the dipole.
25. An electric dipole of length 10cm having charges ±6×10 -3 C, placed at 30° with respect to a uniform
electric field experiences a torque of magnitude 6√3N-m. Calculate the (i) magnitude of electric field
(ii) the potential energy of the dipole.
26. An electric dipole is placed at an angle of 60° with an electric field of intensity 10 5 NC-1. It
experiences a torque equal to 8√3Nm. Calculate the charges on the dipole, if dipole length is 2cm.
27. An electric dipole of length 2cm is placed with its axis making an angle of 30° to a uniform electric
field of 10 5 N/C. If it experiences a torque of 10√3Nm, calculate the (i) magnitude of charge on
dipole (ii) potential energy of dipole.
28. An electric dipole consists of two opposite charges of magnitude q = 10 - 6C separated by 2.0cm. The
dipole is paced in an external field of 1×105 NC-1. What maximum torque does the field exert on the
dipole? How much work must an external agent do to turn the dipole end for end, starting from
position of alignment (θ=0°)?
29. An electric dipole consists of charges +2e and -2e separated by 0.78nm. It is in an electric field of
strength 3.4×106N/C. Calculate the magnitude of torque on the dipole when the dipole moment is (i)

ELECTRIC FLUX
31. A rectangular surface of sides10cm and 15cm is placed inside a uniform electric field of 25Vm -1, such
that normal to the surface makes an angle of 60° with the direction of the electric field. Find the flux
through the rectangular surface.
32. If the electric field is given by (6𝚤̂ + 4𝚥̂ +4𝑘 ), calculate the electric flux through the surface area 20
units lying in the Y-Z plane.
33. A charge of 2×10-9Cis placed at the corner of a cube of side 1m. Find the electric flux passing through
the cube.
ELECTRIC FIELD FROM GAUSS’S THEOREM
34. A large plane sheet of charge having surface charge density 5×10 -6Cm-2 lies in the XY plane. Find
the electric flux through a circular area of radius 0.1m, if the normal to the circular makes an angle
of 60° with Z axis.
35. An infinite thin plane sheet of charge density 10 -8 Cm-2 is held in the air. How far apart are two
equipotential surfaces, whose p.d is 5 volts?
36. Two large thin metal plates are parallel and close to each other. On their inner faces, the plates have
surface charge densities of opposite signs and of magnitude 17×10 -12Cm2. What is E (i) to the left of
the plates (ii) to the right of the plates (iii) in between the plates?
