Based on the findings of the study, what mentoring program for new teachers could
be proposed?

Proposed I-MENTOR (Intensified Mentoring) Program

I. Background and Rationale

As shared by the participants of this study, there is a great need for a


professional development program that will cater the needs of new teachers. The
professional development needs that emerged from the insights shared by the new
teachers include participation in trainings and seminars, instructional leadership and
support, access to learning tools and equipment, and opportunities to continuing
education.

Despite the availability of the Teacher Induction Program (TIP) as stipulated in


the Deped Order 43, S. 2017, new teachers are still confronted with many professional
challenges early in their career. These are not only limited to professional challenges
but also include personal challenges, resource challenges, work environment and
professional challenges, organizational processes and procedures, and leadership and
management challenges, and parents, learners, and community challenges.

Thus, the proposed Intensive Mentoring (I-MENTOR) Program will offer school-
based mentoring approach for new teachers with the active involvement of the school
leader, and other school members. With this program, new teachers will be given proper
orientation on the nature of the learners, needed collegial support, a year-round
mentoring support, and other activities that will assist them in their first encounter with
the professional community.

In addition, new teachers will be given opportunity to evaluate their first year of
experience with the program. The results of the evaluation will be used as a basis for
further enhancing the design of the program in order to support new teachers and
promote a new tradition and positive culture for them.

II. General Program Objectives

The proposed Intensive Mentoring Program (I-MENTOR) aims to:


1. Initiate a proper school-based orientation for new teachers in terms of the workplace,
curriculum, policies and procedures, and professional ethics;

2. Create a positive culture of collaboration between and among new teachers, school
leaders, and fellow teachers;

3. Offer a year-long professional mentoring support to new teachers by means of


instructional modelling, collaborative teaching, benchmarking strategies, and other
collegial support;

4. Provide opportunities for professional development for both the mentors and
mentees through varied activities; and

5. Evaluate the experiences of new teachers to better improve internal elements.
