RENEWAL SEMINAR FOR ANDA LAY MINISTERS


( January 12, 2000 HIA Classroom )

1. liturgy in general
- the official public worship of the Church expressed in words and signs / actions
official – authorized by the church (local bishop, pope)
public – an activity of an assembly of believers visibly gathered
worship – it is prayer; to recognize the divine, to recognize a being greater than himself
expressed in word and sign – includes rites & ceremonies; helps the human person, who is in
embodied state, communicate & express something spiritual
- in the most secular meaning, it includes all the rites and ceremonies celebrated inside the church
- in its deepest meaning, liturgy can be described as an exercise of the priestly office of Jesus Christ in
which the sanctification of man is manifested by signs perceptible to the senses and full public worship is
performed by the Mystical Body of Jesus Christ, that is, by the Head and His members. It is therefore, a
sacred action surpassing all others.
- specifically, it includes ritual acts, i.e. the Eucharist (the highest liturgy), the other sacraments,
sacramentals and other liturgical celebrations

2. functions and ministries in a liturgical assembly (sp. Holy Mass)


- in the mass, everyone has the right and duty to take an active part though the ways in which they do so
will differ accdg. to respective roles and functions so that the Church may be seen to consist of diff.
orders and ministries
2.1. functions & ministries of the ordained:
a. bishop – the ordinary minister of a pontifical high mass (masses of special occasions)
b. priest – the ordinary minister of the mass (not pontifical)
c. deacon – proclaims the gospel, prepares the gifts, helps in distributing communion
2.2. functions & ministries of God’s people:
a. assembly – those who do not have specific roles; actively participates in the liturgy
b. readers / lectors – 1st reading & 2nd reading (in Sunday masses)
c. psalmist – sings the responsorial psalm
d. commentator – guides the assembly in major actions & leads in the responses
e. choir: musicians, accompanists – leads the assembly in singing the impt. parts that needs to be sung
f. acolytes (servers) – altar boys; serve the priest
g. collectors – facilitates the passing around of the collection plates
h. eucharistic ministers – extraordinary ministers of the eucharist; helps in distributing communion;
extraordinary presider in the liturgy of the word (Kasaulogan sa Pulong) at chapels where there is no
priest

3. liturgical year / liturgical calendar


- liturgical celebrations of the year are so arranged in a liturgical calendar so that the faithful are able to reflect
more on the mysteries of Christ’s life
3.1. the four seasons of the liturgical year
a. advent (violet) – when we wait and prepare for the Lord’s birthday & remotely for his second
coming
b. lent (violet) – the preparation time for the celebration of the passion, death & resurrection of our
Lord
c. easter (white) – the season celebrating the resurrection of our Lord
d. ordinary time (green) – those time that do not belong to any of the 3 impt. seasons
3.2. the 3 cycles (A, B, C)
- each cycle starts with the First Sunday of Advent and ends with the Saturday before the Sunday of Advent
- the cycles are so arranged and have different sets of reading so that the whole Scripture (Synoptic Gospels) is
proclaimed every three cycles.

4. liturgical days
4.1. The Liturgical Day in General – from midnight to midnight except Solemnities, Sundays, Feasts of the
Lord occurring on Sundays which begin w/ Evening Prayer 1
4.2. Sundays – when we celebrate the Paschal Mystery; the original feast day
4.3. Solemnities – begins with Evening P. 1; some have propers (e.g. Trinity Sunday, Corpus Christi, Sacred
Heart, Mary Mother of God, Annunciation, etc.)
4.4. Feasts – celebrated w/in the course of the natural day (Lord’s Baptism, Sto. Niño, Apostles except Peter
& Paul which are solemnities, etc.)
4.5. Memorials – a simple remembrance of a saint on his spiritual birthday
4.6. Ferial days – also weekdays; no particular commemoration

5. liturgical books
5.1. sacramentary – also missal; “book of masses”, ritual masses, masses & prayers for various occasions
5.2. lectionary – the book of readings
5.3. ordo – (lat. ordo,ordines, - order), a complete daily liturgical guide for masses, readings, etc.
5.4. Mag-ambahan Kita – a modified / simplified missal (complete with daily prayers & readings for mass);
intended for barrio masses only
5.5. rituals – guide for the celebration of other sacraments, sacramentals, blessings, prayers, devotions, etc.

6. color of liturgical vestments


a. White – masses of Easter and Xmas; feasts & commemorations of the Lord other than his passion; feasts &
memorials of the BVM, the angels, saints who were not martyrs, All Saints (Nov.1), the Chair of Peter,
Conversion of St. Paul; may also be used in masses for the dead
b. Red – Passion Sunday (palm); Good Friday, Pentecost, feasts of the Lord’s Passion, on anniversary of death of
the Apostles, feasts of martyrs
c. Green – masses in ordinary time
d. Violet – Advent & Lent; masses for the dead
e. Rose – 3rd Sunday of Advent & the 4th Sunday in Lent
f. Black – masses for the dead

9. tips in fulfilling different ministries


a. Commentators – project voice properly; sort announcements ahead of time, make them brief and direct;
leads in the responses specially in parts when people are not so responding.
b. Readers – rehearse ahead of time; project voice loudly; treat microphones with distrust; see to it that
microphones are turned on before starting; follow techniques in public speaking (e.g. read in thought
groups)
c. Psalmists – rehearse ahead of time with the accompanist; find a pitch that majority can follow; when the
response is long & difficult to memorize, say / sing it again every after verse (sp. when no projector)
d. Collectors – pause collection when prayers are said, resume later
e. Choir – songs accompany an action; when the action ends, the song also must end
