Minor scales- natural form only

Lesson plan—15-minute theory lecture


Context:
Students already have a knowledge of major scale and pentachords.

Learning Objectives:
Students will:
• Differentiate between major and minor scales
• Write and identify minor scales via parallel and relative relationships to major
• create and ID key signatures of minor keys

Resources/Materials:
• Clendinning, Jane Piper, and Elizabeth West Marvin. The Musician’s Guide to Theory and
Analysis. 3rd Ed., W. W. Norton & Company, Inc., 2016. CH. 5.
• Blackboard/whiteboard
• Worksheet
• Document projector or handouts with musical examples

Musical Examples:
Franz Schubert – “Der Lindenbaum” from Winterreise. – recording and score

Timing of each activity


• #1: 2 min.
• #2: 3 min.
• #3: 5 min.
• #4: 4 min.
• #5: 1 min.

Lesson Plan:
1. (2 minutes) Review of Major scale
A. Structure and how to write a major scale
B. Identify the intervals W-W-H-W-W-W-H
C. Write first note and use the intervals to construct a major scale

2. (3 minutes) Play the two sections of the musical example from Schubert. 0:18 – 0:48 / 1:17 – 1:54
A. Present the sections to the students and ask them to listen.
B. Ask the students to present their harmonic impressions.
i. Major? minor? same melodies repeated?
C. Present the two sections below:
A. Ask them to make a brief analysis of the tonality in these.
a. Observe how the same melody works in major and minor key.

3. (5 minutes) Explain Parallel minor scale


A. Compare parallel minor scale from major scale
i. Write EM and Em on the board next to each other and compare—ask which scale
degrees are different (students respond ^3, ^6, ^7 lower in relationship to parallel
major)
ii. Make sure to write both scales very aligned.
B. Identify the intervals W-H-W-W-H-W-W
i. show and ask them to sing the half steps between ^2-3 and ^5-6; these are the very
expressive intervals of minor

4. (4 minutes) Explain relative minor scale


A. Structure and how to write a relative minor scale from major scale
i. Write the scales offset so C notes are lineup.
ii. write C and Am on the board next to each other and compare how all notes are the
same.
B. Identify the intervals W-H-W-W-H-W-W

5. (1 minute) Assessment:

1. Pass out the homework attached.
