DETAILED LESSON PLAN IN SCIENCE 5

Universidad de Sta. Isabel

St. Elias St., Naga City
S/Y 2021-2022

OBJECTIVES:

The learners should be able to:

 enumerate useful and harmful materials at home and in school; and
 differentiate useful and harmful materials

CONTENT STANDARD The learners will demonstrate understanding of

properties of materials to determine whether they
are useful or harmful

PERFORMANCE STANDARD The learner will uses local, recyclable solid and/or
liquid materials in making useful products

LEARNING COMPETENCIES use the properties of a material whether they are

useful and harmful

CONTENT: Recognizing Useful and Harmful Materials

LEARNING RESOURCES:

 Real objects/pictures/video clips (newspapers, car battery, glass, sand, plastic containers
 Paper
 Ball pen

PREPARATORY ACTIVITY

1. Daily Routine
Greeting the class
- Good morning class  Good morning ma’am
- Prayer  Sign of the cross: Hail Mary full of grace…
- (Name of the student) lead the
prayer  (Students will tell who’s absent for the day)
- Checking of attendance
MOTIVATION

A. Let’s Try

(Let the learners get three items from their bags (The learners will do as told)
and three more items inside the classroom)

“I want you class to identify and describe it. Here (Answers may vary)
are some following questions”

 What is the object made of?

 Are these materials safe or harmful?
Why?

B. Optional Activity

(Show real objects/pictures/video clips of common

materials such as newspapers, car battery, glass,
bottle and, plastic containers)

“I want you class to identify and describe the

materials shown.”
Here is the following question:

 Ask them the similarities and differences

of the materials given.  (Some of the students, will volunteer to
answer what is being asked by the
teacher)

For example:

Alexa raised her hand and said, “Glass is a solid

brittle material so it can be broken after gets
deformed. In case of plastic when it is deformed it
can't retain its original position but attains a new
position or shape. Only similarity between these
two materials are it can't retain their original
position after they gets deformed.”
PRESENTATION & DISCUSSION
“So now, let us discuss what is matter. Matter is
made up of different materials. Things we can
found at home and schools.”
“Here are the examples we can found at home
and in school”
For example:
Materials from Home Materials from School
1. Brooms 1. Books
2. Plates 2. Calculators
3. Cleaning 3. Scissors
Objects 4. Ballpens
4. Kitchen
equipment

What are materials?

- A material is a physical substance use to
make things
- The categories of materials are:
(Metals, plastics, polymers, and
ceramics)

A. Activity
(The class will bring out the materials that was
“Now class I want you to bring out the following asked)
materials: paper and ball pen”
“I want you to look around inside this classroom, (The students will do as told)
then list down 20 materials you have seen.”
Ask them this question:
(The students will do as told)
 Ask the learners to classify their list as
useful and harmful materials. Have
them cross out them harmful ones.

B. Deepening
1. Let the learners answers the following
questions:

 How did you classify the materials?  Materials can be classified into four main
groups: metals, polymers, ceramics, and
composites. Metals are materials on the left
side of the periodic table of chemistry and
include ferrous metals that have iron inside
them (including steel) and nonferrous metals
that don’t.

 Why do you need to know which  We need to know what materials are useful
materials are useful and harmful? and harmful for us to avoid accident or
harm. Materials are considered useful when
Note: Clarify misconceptions based on learners’ it serves a purpose. These materials may
result. have properties such as durability, resistance
to water, heat, or acid, flexibility, elasticity
and hardness.

2. Allow the learners to read about

“Recognizing Useful and Harmful
Materials on pages 4-5

Guide questions:

 Aside from the materials given in the text, Vanish, busted light bulbs, defective electronic
what other materials in your home can you appliances, and broken/ displaced glass. Varnish is
consider as harmful? Why do you consider harmful when inhaled or ingested. Busted light
them as harmful materials? bulbs and broken or displaced glass can cause
injuries when not handled with caution. The small
parts of some defective electronic appliances can be
a choking hazard to children.

These materials can be brought in waste processing

 How do you properly dispose of the centers, especially the varnish, and busted light
materials you have listed above? bulbs. On the other, defective electronic appliances
can be checked for repairs, if it cannot be repaired it
can be brought also to waste processing centers or
junk shops. Broken or displaced glass can be
recycled to make arts and craft materials.

3. Instruct the learners to interview any of

their barangay officials about the waste
management program of their barangay.
Have them ask two or three of their
neighbors if they are aware of such
program. Let them also ask some advice
on how they can implement the said
program. Tell them to make a report about
the information they gathered.
GENERALIZATION

Ask the learners to write down at least five

difference between useful and harmful materials
in tabular form.
Useful Materials Harmful Materials
Useful Materials Harmful Materials A material that serves Materials that are toxic
its purpose to us
Can be used for other Materials that can
purposes cause injury
Can be recycled Materials that cannot
be dumped straight
into a landfill
Can be dumped Can be pollute the
straight into a landfill environment easily
Something can be Taking too much time
recovered from the to decompose
materials

EVALUATION
 LET’S CHECK!

Fill out the table. Enumerate some useful and

harmful materials that you can find at home or in
school. If it is useful, give examples by which you
can use it. If it is helpful, explain how can you
dispose it properly.

REMARKS

“Okay class, I observe that you all had a great

performance for today. I want to congratulate
you for trying your best on participating in
today’s lesson.”

REFLECTION

This lesson was suited for the ability of the Grade

5 students. It was clear and concise. However, I
know that some of the learners needs to improve
their skill on the conducted activity for the next
lesson.
