The Human Reproductive System

The document summarizes the human reproductive system. It provides diagrams of the male and female reproductive systems and labels the key parts. These include the scrotum, testicles, sperm ducts, urethra, penis, ovaries, fallopian tubes, uterus, cervix, vagina, and bladder. It also defines terms related to reproduction such as uterus, cervix, testicles, ovaries, sperm, ovum, and fallopian tubes. The text then discusses the process of fertilization, including how sperm fuse with an egg in the fallopian tubes to form a zygote, which implants in the uterus and develops into a fetus over a 9 month period.

2. Match the following terms to their correct definitions:

Uterus Scrotum Cervix Testicles Ovary Sperm Ovum Fallopian tubes

a) Sometimes called the womb – if an egg is fertilizes it will implant in the wall of
the uterus and develop into a fetus: ____________________.
b) The opening or ‘neck’ of the uterus at the top of the vagina: _______________.
c) Connects the cervix to the outside of the body – the sperm is deposited here during sex:
_________________.
d) The female sex cell – sometimes called the ‘egg’: ________________.
e) After puberty, an egg or ovum is released from here once every 28 days or so:
__________________.
f) Carries the ovum from the ovary to the uterus – the egg is fertilized here:
_____________________.
g) The male sex cell – it is adapted to swim from the vagina to the egg:
____________________.
h) After puberty, these make sperm continuously: ___________________.
i) A sac of skin which hold the testes: __________________.

3. Read the text about fertilization and answer the questions.

Fertilisation occurs when a sperm fuses with an ovum to form a zygote.
During the ovulation cycle, the ovary releases an egg into the Fallopian tubes.
During sex, male ejaculation releases 300-400 million sperm cells into the vagina. These sperm
pass into the uterus and the fallopian tube. If the sperm find an egg, they surround it and use
enzymes to break through the outer membrane of the ovum. When this happens, their nuclei fuse
and fertilisation takes place. Only one sperm can fuse with the egg cell.
Once fertilised, the egg begins to divide. Then it passes through the fallopian tubes and is
implanted in the uterus where the zygote begins to form.
Eggs can survive in the fallopian tubes for 24-48 hours. An unfertilised egg is expelled along with
the lining of the uterus when the woman has her next menstrual period. Sperm that don't encounter
an ovum can survive for five days.

a) Define the following terms:

- fuse

- implant:

b) What is fertilization?

c) Why does fertilization happen?

d) Where does fertilization take place?

e) How does a zygote form?

f) What happens during a menstrual period?

g) Summarize the fertilization process in your own words.
