2. By using Earth Lamp Switch (ELS), we could determine if there are earth
faults cause by the ship electrical distribution system.
• Explain what is earth faults and the risk concerning it.
- A ground fault (earth fault) is any failure that allows unintended connection of
power circuit conductors with the earth. Such faults can cause objectionable
circulating currents, or may energize the housings of equipment at a dangerous
voltage.
- When earth fault occurs, the electrical system gets short-circuited and the short-
circuited current flows through the system. The fault current returns through
the earth or any electrical equipment, which damages the equipment. It also
interrupts the continuity of the supply and may shock the user.
• Give an example on how you would find the point of earth fault on board a
ship.
• It is a set of lamps, which show the presence of earth fault in distribution
system.
• Each lamp is connected between one phase and common neutral point.
• If earth fault occurs the lamp will show dim light or goes out because
potential is zero.
• The location of fault can be traced by switching off the individual branch
circuit breaker and check the condition of earth lamp.
• When the branch circuit with the fault is switched off, the earth lamp will
return to normal brightness.
3. List the procedures of preparing the Main Engine.
Operating Procedures
Starting ME Manually on Dead Ship.
It is assumed that Electric Power Plant is running and MSB is powered on by at
least one of the diesel generators (see the paragraph 2.1 on page 245).
It is assumed that the Steam plant is in operation or ready to start automatically
(see the paragraph 2.2 on page 246).
It is assumed that the main pumps are set for CMS control.
On the CMS page check out that the main pumps are running in duty/standby
configuration on the following displays:
1. FO SERVICE SYSTEM;
2. S.W. COOLING SYSTEM;
3. L.T. COOLING F.W. SYSTEM;
The Main Engine will be started on MDO.
Pre-start Operations
1. On the E/R FANS GPBP (use menu item ER Fan GPBP of the page ER3) check
out that fans 1, 2, 3 run for supply, and fan 4 runs for exhaust.
2. On the AUX BLOWER NO I (NO 2) STARTER panels (use menu item Aux
Blowers 1,2 LOP of the page ER3), for both blowers:
a. Turn MAIN SWITCH on.
b. Set REMOTE mode of operation. The blowers will then start
automatically.
3. On the HT COOLING SYSTEM display of the page (MS: set No 1 (No 2) ME
JACKET CFW, PUMP as duty/standby pair: double click to start one pump, and
chick ST-BY button for the other pump
4. On the display HT Cooling System (use menu item HT Cooling System of the
page SYS)
a. Open the Preheater inlet and outlet valves:
b. Close the Shut-off valve. The Preheater (jacket water) pump is running
c. For successful ME start, the temperature of the Engine cylinders, should
raise up, to more than 50 degrees. Warming-up time is about 15 minutes
5. On the LO. SERVICE SYSTEM displays of the page CMS: set No. 1 (No. 2)
MAIN LO PUMP as duty/ standby pair double-click to start one pump, and click
ST-BY button for the other pump
6. On ECC C Bottom Panel (use menu item ECC C Bottom Panel of the page
ECR) start the cylinders pre-lubrication pump
a. Set CYLINDER LUBRICATOR DISPLAY mode control switch, to
MCU (Main Control Unit) position.
b. Click PUMP 1 button to start the pump LED illuminates
7. On the display HT Cooling System the page SYS when cylinders temperature
≥50°C
a. Close the Preheater inlet and outlet valves.
b. Open the Shut-off valve for normal ME cooling. Otherwise, ME start
fails, and further start will be blocked.
8. On the display 3D (use menu item 3D of the page ER1) open FO Indicator
valves of all cylinders
9. On the TURNING GEAR STARTER panel (use menu item Turning Gear LOP
of the page ER1)
a. Set the handle to position ENGAGE:
b. Click and hold FORWARD button, the ammeter reading should be about
4
с. Click and hold REVERSE button; the ammeter reading should be about
d. Set the handle to position DISENGAGE
10. On the display 3D the page ER1 close FO Indicator valves of all cylinders.
11. On the display FO ME, GE Service System (use menu item FO ME, GE
Service System of the page SYS): open ME FO Inlet valve.
STARTING THEME FROM THE LOP
1. On the ME Local Panel (use menu item ME LOP, or 3D of the page ER1)
a. Set the control mode switch handle to ENGINE SIDE
b. Set the HANDWHEEL BLOCKING ARM handle to ENGINE SIDE
c. Set the maneuvering handle to position START
d. Click and hold the START button till the reading on M/E REVOLUTION
gauge reaches more than 38 RPM
2. On the ECC C Bottom console (use menu item ECC C Bottom of the page
ECR).
a. Set the M/E TELEGRAPH RECEIVER to position AHEAD SLOW to set
direction
b. Set the MANOEUVRING HANDLE to position about 40% (for the ME
to run slow).
c. On the CYLINDER LUBRICATOR DISPLAY set mode control switch
to Auto. for economy of the lube oil consumption.
3. On the ME Local Panel set both handles to REMOTE The control is transferred
to ECR On the CMS acknowledge all alarms.
ME can be started from ECR without preheating and turning gear engagement if it
has been stopped for a short while. Provided, all ship systems are prepared for ME
start and the temperature in cylinders is > 50 degrees. Starting from ECR console
ECC C Bottom is performed using the telegraph and maneuvering handles.
4. What is the reason of performing blow through of the main engine?
a) To Blow out through indicator cock any residual exhaust gas or other products
of combustion trapped inside the cylinder after shutting the engine.
b) To check if any jacket cooling water from cylinder head or turbocharger or any
other source, has leaked while the engine was shut and collected on top of piston.
If while blowing through, water comes out of indicator cock or relief valve, we
need to investigate and rectify the fault before starting the engine. It is imperative
that the engine is blown through before starting. There have been cases where the
generator engine has been started from control room without bothering to blow
through first, and water collected on top of piston has resulted in a bent connecting
rod and broken piston. (water cannot be compressed)
