MODULE 8 : SOCIAL RELATIONSHIPS IN MIDDLE AND LATE ADOLESCENCE

INTRODUCTION:

There are various individuals in our community whom we look up to for many reasons.
They do different roles that help shaped our neighborhood. Roles emerge to facilitate group
functioning and affect the dynamics of the group. Efficiency in realizing common goals are
influenced by how each member accepts the roles that he or she plays.

As you have known by now, the relationships adolescents have with their peers, family,
and members of their social sphere play a vital role in their development. Adolescence is a
crucial period in social development, as adolescents can be easily swayed by their close
relationships. Research shows there are four main types of relationships that influence an
adolescent: parents, peers, community, and society.

Social Relationship in Middle Adolescence and Late Adolescence

We look up to people for several reasons. For example, we admire community leaders
because they organize activities for the welfare of the youth, parents, senior citizens, and other
members of the community. We loop up to some people because they exemplify deeds that
show responsibility, strength and productivity. We look up to some people because they do
their tasks with commitment. Here are some people we usually admire.

1. Teachers. We admire our teachers for
being dedicated in their works and for
planting the seeds of wisdom in our
minds. They assist us in learning new
things and spending time to prepare
lessons for us. They create a positive
impact in our lives as they impart new
knowledge, enhance our skills and instill
in us important values to live meaningfully.

2. Doctors. We respect the doctors because

they help us take care of our body. They
prescribe medicines that heal sickness
and make us healthy and strong. Doctors
who show compassion in treating sick
people are admirable because they
genuinely value the welfare of others.

3. Policemen and policewomen. They

are admirable because they protect us
and keep our neighborhood safe. They
implement the rules of the government to
maintain peace and order. They put their
lives at stakes as they do their job.

4. Firemen. We respect these people for being there whenever
there is a disaster. They also put their lives at stake to save the victims of fire.
Firemen, some of whom are volunteers, respond to emergency calls readily, and
thus, have helped many people from different places. They actively
participate in fire prevention activities as well.

5. Dentist. We admire dentists because they

promote oral health. We run to them
whenever our teeth ache, and they repair
those with cavities to restore our smile.

Indeed, the people we admire influence us in many ways. We may be unaware of how
they do so, but we have experience changes in our attitude, goals, and values as we see them
and work with them.

According to Hogg and Vaughman (2011), the person who influences you has the power
to change you because you tend to imitate some of his or her personality traits.

Leadership
Acting the role of a leader is a very powerful way of influencing others. According to Daft
(2011), leadership, is a relationship among leaders and followers, which is influential in
affecting change and realizing common goals.

 It involves creating change
 Expect incredible result
 Leaders and followers take advantage of building on their strengths and compensating
for their weakness for their weaknesses to achieve their vision.

As cited by Hogg and Vaughan (2011), the following are three leadership style that
Lippit and Whited had observed In their classic study.

1. Autocratic Leadership – this leadership style centralizes in authority. The autocratic

leader derives power from the position, controls rewards, and uses coercion to make his
or her group members follow. He or she is aloof and focuses exclusively on the task at
hand.
2. Democratic Leadership – a democratic leader delegates authority to others, asks for
suggestions, and discusses plans with members. He or she depends on the respect of
his/her members for influence.
3. Laissez-faire Leadership – a laissez-faire leader leaves the group to its own capacity
to finish its tasks. He or she intervenes minimally.

To be an effective leader, you should understand the importance of being flexible in

adjusting your behaviors to fit the circumstances of your group. According to Daft (2011), if
there is time pressure on a leader or the members are too slow to finish their tasks, the leaders
must adopt an autocratic style. In contrast, when you see that members are capable of making
wise decisions, you may revert back to the democratic style.

Judge et al. (2002) found in their study the big five personality dimensions:

1. Extraversion/surgency
2. Agreeableness
3. Conscientiousness
4. Emotional stability
5. Intellect/leadership

Followership

The role of a follower is equally important in the realization of a group’s common goal.
For society to be peaceful, orderly, and productive, members must be willing to shift into and
out of their role under certain circumstances to influence change in their followers and achieve
common goals (Daft, 2011) Leaders influence followers, and at the same time followers
influence leaders.

Apparently, when followers do not do their jobs, the leader is immobilized, and the
group or society suffers. The following are some of the things expected from an effective
follower (Bossidy, 2007)

1. A make-it-happen attitude. Leaders expect result from their followers as they do

not need excuses. Task become smoother when followers can complete tasks and get
things done. Goals are achieved easier when followers exercise problem-solving skills by
being creative and open to ideas and alternative solutions. Followers contribute to the
leader’s success when they enthusiastically exert efforts to finish their jobs on time.
2. A willingness to collaborate. Collaboration is important in the realization of the
common goal. The strength of a team is heavily dependent on the interdependence of
self-reliable members. Incredible results are seen when members are open to the
uniqueness of each and the group benefits from collaboration.

3. The passion to drive your own growth. Leaders seek for followers
who want to develop themselves. The best followers are not those who have skills, but
those take responsibilities to continuously improve their abilities.
