Measures of Variability For Ungrouped Data

This lesson plan is for a 7th grade mathematics class on measures of variability for ungrouped data. The objectives are for students to be able to identify measures of variability, link the concept to real life contexts, and solve problems involving measures of variability for ungrouped data. The lesson involves students arranging shuffled letters to form words related to measures of variability. Examples are then shown of calculating the mean, median, and mode of ungrouped data sets. Students will practice arranging data in order and calculating the measures of central tendency. The lesson aims to help students understand and apply concepts of measures of variability.

June 15, 2021 (WEDNESDAY) Learning Area MATHEMATICS
Time & Dates
12:50-2:20 PM ( Libra ) Quarter 4th QUARTER

I. OBJECTIVES
A. Content The learner demonstrates understanding of key concepts, uses and
Standards importance of Statistics, data collection/gathering and the different forms of
data representation, measures of central tendency, measures of variability,
and probability.
B. Performance The learner is able to collect and organize data systematically and compute
Standards accurately measures of central tendency and variability and apply these
appropriately in data analysis and interpretation in different fields. .
C. Learning Objectives: At the end of the lesson , the students will be able
Competencies/Objec
tives. Write the LC 1. Identify the measures of variability for ungroup data
code for each 2. Linked the concept of variability in real life context

Class your understanding of the concept of the measures of Central Tendency, given the data
below, find the mean of the data

SET A
4, 10, 12, 20, 24

SET B
12, 13, 14, 15, 16
What is the mean for set A, and how about in set B?

Base on the number line class , which set has a long line? How about the short line?

The line represents the spread of the data and it shows that Set A is more spread than set B

Does the set data in our activity considered as grouped data or ungroup data? Why

Grouped data are set of data that can arrange and categorize in the form of data, while the
ungroup data are data that are raw and not yet classified.

B. Establishing a Motivation:
purpose for the Class are you familiar with the term “ Measures of Variability “
lesson
In our drill , we compare the distance of spread of set A and set B right? That process
is a way of knowing the spread of the data and determining that consistency of data
which is the core of the measures of variability

To learn more the measures of variability and its type we will conduct an activity

Are you ready?

The Activity intitled “ Connectiword “

You will arrange the shuffled letters to form a word that is related to Measures of
Variability

concepts and
practicing new
skills #1

E .Discussing new A. Directions: Ungrouped Data Calculate the measures of central tendency
concepts and of the following.
practicing new 1. A researcher collects data on the ages of recipients of doctoral degree
skills #2 in science and engineering, and his study yields the following.

37 37 24 28 43 44
Find the mean. 36 41 33 27
Solution: The mean is determined by the
sum of the ages and then dividing by the total number of recipients.

Where: - sum of the item values

n - number of items
Mean = 37+37+24+28+43+44+36+41+33+27 10

= therefore, then = 35.

2. Seven mothers were selected and given a blood pressure check. Their
systolic pressures were recorded below.
135 121 119 116 121 131

130 121 131

Find their median.

Solution: Arrange the data in increasing order
116 119 121 121
130 131 135
Select the middle value. Therefore the median is
121.
2. Eight novels were randomly selected and the numbers of pages were
recorded as follows:
415 398 402 400
420 415 407 425
Find the median.
Solution: Arrange the data in order.
398 400 402 407
415 415 420 425

Since the middle point falls halfway between 407 and 415, find the median by
getting the mean of these two values.
Median = , therefore the median is 411

4. The sizes of 15 classes selected at random are:

MEASURE OF CENTRAL TENDENCY
H.Making Mean – (Arithmetic mean) is the average of a set of data which is affected by
generalizations and extremely high or low scores.
abstractions about To find the mean of an ungroup data, use the formula:
the lesson
X =

Where:   - sum of the item values

n - number of items
Median – The median of a data set illustrates the middle value when the set is
ordered in ascending or descending. The median is an average of two middle values if
a data set contains even number of values. The median will either be a specific value
or will fall between two values.
Mode –is the measure or value which occurs most frequently (repeated) in a set
of data. It is the value with the greatest frequency. In other words the highest
repetition of a same number in a data set is considered to be mode for a data set. The
data set doesn't have the mode when each number in a data set occurs in the same
number of time.
I.Evaluating A. Direction : UNGROUPED DATA. Calculate the mean, median, and
learning mode/s of the following.
