L02 Pump - Report

This laboratory report summarizes an experiment measuring the efficiency, head, and discharge of pumps. It includes the test details, collected data, calculations and analysis of pump performance in single, series and parallel configurations. Key findings are that series pumps contribute to increased head while maintaining flow rate, and parallel pumps allow for variable discharge without changing head. The conclusion is that the experiment objectives were met by referring to an online video during distance learning.

3. Series pumps are used in series in a system where substantial head changes take place without any
appreciable difference in discharge. When two or more pumps are configured in series, the flow rate
throughout the pumps remains the same; however, each pump contributes to the increase in the head so
that the overall head is equal to the sum of the contributions of each pump. While for single pump the
pump has to overcome the pressure loss that is caused by friction in any valves, pipes, and fittings in the
pipe system. This frictional head loss is approximately proportional to the square of the flow rate.

4. Single pump is the total system head that the pump has to overcome is the sum of the total static head
and the frictional head. The total static head is the sum of the static suction lift and the static discharge
head, which is equal to the difference between the water levels of the discharge and the source tank.
However, parallel pumps are useful for systems with considerable discharge variations and with no
appreciable head change. In parallel, each pump has the same head. However, each pump contributes to
the discharge so that the total discharge is equal to the sum of the contributions of each pump.

CONCLUSION

Due to the Online Distance Learning (ODL), we had to carried out this experiment by referring to the video
given by our lecturer. From the experiment, we can conclude that different pumps have different ways of
operation. Thus, we must identify for each pump when it is appropriate situations to use. When pumps are
connected in series the flow rate will remain the same as that of a single pump but there will be increase in
total head. When pumps are connected in parallel the total head does not change but the volumetric flow rate
will increase. Plus, the objective which is determine characteristics of pump have also been achieved.
