JHS SSG REVIEWER: SECOND QUARTER

SUBJECT: MATH 10
PREPARED BY: EISSEN ALLEN G. OGAYA

 DIVISION OF POLYNOMIAL
x3+x2+4x-6
Example:
x-1
1. x3 divided by x
2. Multiply x-1 by x2
3. Change the sign, Add
4. Bring down 4x
5. 2x2 divided by x
6. Multiply x-1 by 2x
7. Change the sign, add
8. Bring down -6
9. 6x divided by x
10. Multiply x-1 by 6
11. Repeat Step 7
Answer: x2+2x+6

 THE REMAINDER THEOREM

If a polynomial p(x) is divided by x-c, then the remainder is equal to p(c).
Example:
p(x) = 2x3-7x2-5x+4; x-4
x-4 or x=4
Solution:
p(4) = 2(4)3-7(4)2-5(4)+4
p(4) = 2(64)-7(16)-5(4)+4
p(4) = 128-112-20+4
p(4) = 16 – 20 +4
p(4) = -4+4
p(4) = 0

 HOW TO FIND K USING THE REMAINDER THEOREM

Example:
p(x) = x4-2x3-x2-15x+2k
x=12
Remainder = 16,958
p(x) = (12)4-2(12)3-122-15(12)+2k
p(x) = 20,736–3,456–144 -180+2k
p(x) = 17,280-144-180+2k
p(x) = 17,136-180+2k
p(x) = 16,956+2k

2k+16,956=16,958
2k=-16,956+16,958=2
Divide both sides by 2 and the Answer is 1

 TERMS:
 GCF – Greatest Common Factor + -
 DTS – Difference of two squares, PERFECT SQUARE, (Binomial)(Binomial)
 SDTC – Sum and Difference of two cubes (Binomial)(Trinomial)
 GQT – General Quadratic Trinomials
 FACTORING (BINOMIAL)
Example:
x2-81
1. Think of a number when you multiply it by itself the answer is 81
2. use the FOIL method to check if it is correct
3. Answer is (x+9)(x-9)
 ROOT THEOREM – finding the factors of the constant and using them to find its roots of it.

 POLYNOMIAL FUNCTION
 A Polynomial is a monomial or a sum of monomials
 The degree of a polynomial in one variable is the greatest exponent of its variable.
 Leading Coefficient is the coefficient of the term with the highest degree.
DEGRE TYPE STANDARD FORM

2 Quadratic a2x2+ a1x+ a0
3 Cubic a3x3+ a2x2+ a1x+ a0
4 Quartic a4x4+ a3x3+ a2x2+ a1x+ a0
