Suffix Lesson
Lesson 1
Date taught: January 27, 2022
ELA
Whole class lesson
Lesson Objective
● After direct instruction about what suffixes are and what it means to use them, students
will identify the suffix of a word apart from its root word, the meanings of various
suffixes, and how a suffix changes its root word.
Standards Addressed
● CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RF.3.3.A
○ Identify and know the meaning of the most common prefixes and derivational
suffixes.
● CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RF.3.3.B
○ Decode words with common Latin suffixes.
Anticipatory Set
● Start with a suffix word hunt to grab their attention
○ “So what are some things that we notice about all of these words? … Interesting,
they all end with ‘ful!’ Does anyone know what that is called? … Yes, that is a
suffix!”
Perceived Objective and Rationale
● “Today we are going to be learning about suffixes and what it means to use them. It’s
important to learn about suffixes because they can be used to change the parts of speech
of a word, and they can really elevate your writing skills.”
Input and Modeling
● Begin by defining what a suffix is
○ Suffix: a word parts that comes at the end of a word
○ Root word + suffix = new word
● Show a list of common suffixes and examples of words with the suffixes attached
○ Point out the root/base words that suffixes attach to
● Explain the meanings of common suffixes and how they alter the meaning of the root
word they’re attached to
Guided Practice
● “Let’s do some examples together.”
● Put up four practice questions on the screen and ask students to silently think to
themselves for one minute about the questions
● Do the first two questions with them, asking for their feedback and answers
● Call on volunteers to do the last two questions with the class
Check for Understanding
● “So who can tell me what a suffix is? Please raise your hand … What are some examples
of different suffixes? … Why is it helpful to be familiar with different suffixes? …”
Independent Practice + Assessment
● Students will complete a worksheet page from their My Turn workbook regarding
suffixes
○ The worksheet objectives align with the lesson objectives
Closure
● “Today, we learned about suffixes––what they are, what they mean, and how they can
change the meaning of its root word. Identifying suffixes can help us read words quickly
and accurately. Also, knowing different word parts––such as base words and
suffixes––can help us break down longer unfamiliar words and figure out what they
mean.”
Differentiation
● For students who need more support: work one-on-one or in small groups with those who
need extra help while other students are doing independent work
● For students who need less support: have them search for words with suffixes in a regular
reading book that they will write down and then define
