Lesson Plan in English VI

I. Objectives
At the end of the lesson, the students will be able to:
 Define suffix and Identify the words that have suffixes in the story
 Use a list of common suffixes (-er, -ed, -ing, -ful,) to make new words
 Construct sentences using suffixes

II. Subject Matter


Topic : Suffixes
Reference : English Language 6 page 58-61
Materials : Visual aids, Big book Television and box
Value : Develop good communication skills inside the classroom.

III. Procedure
A. Preparatory Activities

1. Review

What was our lesson yesterday? Our lesson yesterday was all about prefixes.
Very good!
What is prefix? A prefix is a word, a letter, or a number placed
before a word.
Who can give me an example of a prefix? -dishonest
What is the root word of the word dishonest? The root word is honest.
And what is the prefix? The prefix is dis.
Who can give me another example? -misbehave
What is the root word of the word misbehave? The root word is behave.
And what is the prefix? The prefix is mis.
Very good!

2. Motivation

Let’s have a game. The game is called. “4 PICS


ONE WORD”. I will group you into four (4) and I will
distribute an envelope to each group. What you are
going to do is to guess the picture by arranging the
letters found inside the envelope. If you are done
guessing, then post your output on the board.
Do you understand? -Yes, sir.
(Teacher will distribute the (Pupils do what the teacher told them to do)
envelop to his pupils}

What is your guess about the first picture, group Our guess is hunter, sir.
1?
Very good! The word that we guess is pleaded, sir.
How about the group 2?
Very good! The word is sleeping, sir.
What about the group 3?
Very good! Our guess about the picture is playful, sir.
And the group 4 what is your guess?
Very good!

B. Developmental Activities
1. Presentation Yes, sir.
Class, do you want to hear to a story?
I have here a story about “The Lion and the
Mouse”. Listen attentively as I read to you the story. (Pupils’ listen while the teacher is reading the story)
(Teacher reads the story)

“The Lion and the Mouse”


Once upon a time, there was a beautiful jungle.
There was a Lion and there’s a Mouse near a Lion cave.
The mouse was very playful. One day, the mouse went
to the Lion’s cave. While the Lion is sleeping, without
knowing the Lion’s power. It started to play over the
Lion. The Lion suddenly woke up, it got angry and
began to roar loudly Roarrrrrrrrrrrr! The Lion suddenly
caught the mouse and threatened that he would eat him.
How dare you to disturb my sleep (growls and glare)
you should be punished for this! I’m going to eat you
Mmmm! The mouse said sorry and pleaded the Lion to
leave him without eating. “Pardon, Oh King”. The Little
mouse cried! Forgive me this time! I shall never forget
it! Who knows but what I may be able to do in return
some of these days! The Lion took pity and let the
mouse go. Four days later, a hunter came to the jungle.
The hunter saw the Lion and trapped it using a net. The
hunter went to the village to find more people to kill the
Lion. The Lion keep shouting for help! Help!!! Help!!!
Meanwhile, the mouse is walking along the jungle and
suddenly heard the Lion’s voice asking for help. The
Lion’s cry. Mouse heard the Lion and came to help him.
The Lion thanked the mouse for his help. Then they
started to live as friends forever.
Yes, sir.
Did you understand the story? The story is all about the lion and the mouse, sir.
What is the story all about? He threatened the mouse that he would eat him.
What did the lion do when he caught the mouse? No! sir.
Did he eat the mouse? Because the lion pitied the mouse.
Why? A friend in need is a friend indeed.
What do you think is the moral lesson of the story?

2. Discussion
Let’s go back to our game a while back. Will you -hunter
read your answers? -pleaded

-There is a word part added to the end of a root
What can you notice with these words? word.
Very good!
As you noticed there are words that are added at the
end of each root word. Yes, or no? -Yes, sir.
How do we call this words? Those words are called Suffix, sir.
Very good!
Our topic for today class is all about suffixes.

Let’s go back to the story about the Lion and the


Mouse. Who can give me words with suffixes in the
story? -beautiful,
-playful,
-sleeping
-threatened
-punished
-eating
-cried
-hunter
-walking
So class lets study more about suffixes by
watching this video clip. (The teacher let his pupils
watch the video clip) (Pupils watch the video clip)

Did you understand the video clip? -Yes, sir.


In the word hunter, what is the root word? The root word in the word hunter is hunt, sir.
Very good! And what is the suffix that we added to
the root word? The suffix is -er, sir.
Did we form a new word when we add the suffix -
er to the root word hunt? -Yes, sir.
Who can use the word hunter in a sentence? -The hunter went to the jungle to hunt.
Very good! Who can give me another word with
the suffix -er. -teacher
Another? -player
What is the root word in the word pleaded? The root word in the word pleaded is plead, sir.
And what is the suffix that we added at the end of
the root word? The suffix that we added at the end of the root
word is ed, sir.
Very good!
If we join the word plead and the suffix -ed, what
word did we form? We form the word pleaded , sir.
So if we add -ed to a word it means that the action
has been done. Ok. -Yes, sir.
Who can use the word pleaded in a sentence? -The mouse pleaded to the lion.
When we add the suffix -ed to the root word plead,
did we form a new word? -Yes, sir.
Who can give me another example of word with the
suffix –ed? -cried
Another? -punished
In the word sleeping, what is the root word? The root word in the word sleeping is -sleep, sir
Very good! And what is the suffix that we added at
the end of the root word? The suffix that we added at the end of the root
When we add the suffix -ing to the word sleep what word is -ing, sir.
word did we form? We form the word sleeping.
Very good! Did we form another word when we
joined the root word sleep and the suffix -ing? -Yes, sir.
Who can use the word sleeping in a sentence? -The lion is sleeping.
Very good! Who can give me another word using
the suffix -ing? -singing
Another? -praying
Very good!
What is the root word in the word beautiful? The root word is beauty.
And what is the suffix that we add at the end of the The suffix that we add at the end of the word
root word? beauty is ful.
Did we form another word when we added the
suffix ful to the root word beauty? Yes, sir.
Who can use the word beautiful in a sentence? My sister is beautiful.

If the word ends in y, change the y to i before


adding the suffix –ful. Understand? Yes, sir.
Who can give me other example of words using
the suffix ful? -powerful
What else? -painful
Another? -Stressful
Always remember class that a suffix changes the
meaning of a word. Yes,sir.
For example in the word teacher. The root word is
teach and this means to give lesson to a student and
when we add the suffix -er we form a new word which
is teacher, and this means a person who teach.
Do you understand? Yes, sir.

3. Generalization
What do you call the word added at the end of a The word added at the end of a root word is
root word? called a suffix, sir.
What is a suffix? A suffix is a word part added to the end of a root
word and changes the meaning of a word.

4. Application
Let us have another game. I will group you
again into four groups and I will distribute another set of
activity for each group. What you need to do is to
answer the activities given to you. If you’re done
present your works in front, understand? Yes, sir.
Group I. “Reciting a Poem”
Underline the words in the Poem that has a
suffix -er, -ed, -ing, -ful and recite it infront.

Here’s a beautiful class room,

What do you see?

I see a busy teacher


Children on the floor
Lots of hands up in the air
Wait, there’s even more

-Group II. “Role play”


List all the words in the role play that has a
suffix - er, -ed, -ing, and –ful, write your answer on
the space provided. Choose a member as a (Narrator,
Techer, Audrey, Harvey, Ace, Clarence, Student 1, 2
and 3) and perform it in front.
In the Classroom
Narrator: (The teacher distributes the quiz results)
Teacher: Ok, that’s all for today. Class dismissed.

while because we need to talk.

What you need to do is to add the suffix to a root
word that you had spinned.

-Group IV. “Find Me”
In the puzzle, find eight words with a suffix –er, -
ed, -ing, -ful. To be able to search them be sure to
search downward and sideward. Encircle the correct
answer.

IV. Evaluation
Direction: identify the word with suffix in the
following sentences.

7. He made a powerful statement.
8. She cooked hotdog for breakfast.
9. My sister is eating chicken joy.
10. She is a good writer.

V. Assignment
Create as many words as you can using a root word
and a suffixes from the choices below.
