In the end he gets something he really wants. Look at the picture on the cover and decide what Nadim is swapping with Biff. © = Word recognition @ = Language comprehension _ Read the story Use the letter sounds for new words, e.g. 'b-r-o0-k-e-n’ on page 1 Page 5, look at ‘swapped’, then look at ‘Swap’ on the front cover. Work out which letters have been added. Page 8, find two words in 'skateboard’. Page 16, ask, “Was Nadim lucky to get a bike, or did he work hard for it?’ 86 oe Nadim found a bat. It was broken. Nadim mended the bat. His dad helped. The bat looked good. Chip had a robot. The robot was broken. Chip liked Nadim’s bat. He swapped the robot for the bat. Nadim mended the robot. He painted it silver. The robot looked good. Biff had a skateboard. It had no wheels. Biff swapped it for the robot. Nadim mended the skateboard. | He put on new wheels. “It’s a good skateboard now,” he said. Wilma had a bike. The bike was | broken. Nhe = « ~~ | ya | SEM || Sn att lS a SD — > | 2 ee She swapped it for the skateboard. Nadim mended the bike. He painted it black. The bike looked good. “Not bad,” said Nadim. Whatever next? To remember things in the order they happened. Ask, “What did Nadim swap the bat for?” Look in the book to check. The children then ask you, “What did Nadim swap the robot for?” Go on taking turns until you get to the bike. You can use these ideas straight away, or on another day. @ Find ‘swap’ in ‘swapped’. Look for shorter words in ‘looked’, ‘painted’, ‘mended’ and ‘liked’. Look for any word that was hard to read.
