Alex Brychta Story written by Roderick Hunt Oxford Illustrations by Alex Brychta Reading Tree —————— Kipper sees an artist painting a picture on a wall. At school some children have drawn pictures on the wall to tease him. Mrs May is cross but Kipper has a good idea. Look at pages 6-7. Ask, “What are the girls doing? Why is Kipper sad?" Explain that it is always good to tell a grown-up if other children are unkind to you. Word recognition @ = Language comprehension @ Read the story together. Notice whether Kipper looks happy or sad. © Page 6, use the letter sounds in ‘d-r-aw’ to work out ‘drawing’. © Page 10, ask children to find the ‘ch’ sound at the beginning of ‘children’. © Page 12, find the ‘ch’ sound on the ‘chalk’ label. @ Page 16, ask, “Who do you think took a photograph?” Dad took Kipper to school. They went past the library. A lady was painting the wall. Kipper ran into the playground. He wanted to play. There was a drawing on the wall. The wall looked a mess. Mrs May was cross. The children were painting. Kipper had an idea. Miss Green drew circles on the wall. The children painted faces. The wall looked good. Everyone liked it. “Good for Kipper!” everyone said. Double trouble To help notice words which have a double letter. © Find a word with double letters in the spelling on page 1. Say, “1 can see double ‘o’ in ‘took’.” (On pages 2-3, ask the child to find a word with double letters. Take turns through the book. You can use these ideas straight away, or on another day. @ Choose a word that a child founc hard to read.
