Mean Temperature Difference

1. The document discusses heat exchangers and defines the mean temperature difference for parallel and counter flow configurations. 2. It provides the equations for arithmetic mean temperature difference (AMTD) and log mean temperature difference (LMTD). 3. Two sample problems are shown calculating the LMTD and AMTD for given heat exchanger configurations and temperatures.

HEAT EXCHANGERS

MEAN TEMPERATURE DIFFERENCE

A. Parallel Flow
ΔtA=tx – t1
ΔtB=ty – t2
B. Counter Flow
ΔtA=ty – t1
ΔtB=tx – t2

Mean Temperature Difference

1. Arithmetic Mean Temperature Difference
ΔtA+ ΔtB
AMTD=
2
2. Log Mean Temperature Difference
ΔtA − ΔtB
LMTD= ΔtA
lnΔtB

Sample Problems
1. A liquid to liquid counter flow heat exchanger is used to heat
a cold fluid from 120 oF to 310 oF. Assuming that the hot
fluid enters at 500 oF and leaves 400 oF, calculate the log
mean temperature difference for the heat exchanger.

ΔtA − ΔtB
LMTD= ΔtA
lnΔtB

Where Counter Flow

ΔtA=ty – t1 ty= 400 t1=120
ΔtB=tx – t2 tx= 500 t2= 310
Soln
ΔtA=400 – 120 =280
ΔtB=500 – 310 =190

280 − 190
LMTD= 280
ln190
=232.1 oF

2. A turbo-generator, 16 cylinder , Vee type diesel engine has

an air consumption of 3000 kg/hr per cylinder at rated load
and speed. This air is drawn in thru a filter by centrifugal
compressor direct connected to the exhaust gas turbine. The
temperature of the air from the compressor is 145 oC and a
counterflow air cooler reduces the air temperature to 45 oC
Before it goes to the engine suction header. Cooling water
enter air cooler at 30 oC and leaves at 38 oC. Calculate the
arithmetic mean temperature difference.

Formula:
ΔtA+ ΔtB
AMTD=
2
Soln
ΔtA=ty – t1 = 45 – 30 = 15
ΔtB=tx – t2 = 145 – 38 = 107
107+ 15
AMTD=
2
= 61oC

3. A heat exchanger has an overall coefficient of heat transfer

of 900 W/m2K. The mean temperature difference is 20oC
and heat loss is 15000 W. Calculate the heat transfer area.
Soln:
Q=UAΔT
Where ΔT is equal to the LMTD

15000W=(900 W/m2K)(A)(20)K
A=0.833m2
