MODULE IN MATHEMATICS 10
First Quarter/ Week 2/ Day 3

OBJECTIVE: Determines the sum of the first n terms of a given arithmetic sequence.

YOUR LESSON FOR TODAY:

 Arithmetic Series

TRY TO DISCOVER!

Consider the following situation:

A pile of wood has 17 logs in the bottom row, 15 logs in the next bottom row
and so on,with two less logs in each row until the top row which consists of
1 log.How many logs are there in the pile?

From the problem,it is clear that the number of logs in a pile forms a finite arithmetic
sequence. The sequence is 17, 15,13,11,...1.It is finite because it has a first and last terms of 17
and 1,respectively.

How can you determine the answer in the problem? What are you going to do with the
terms in the sequence?

Since you are asked to find the total number of logs in a pile, what you need to do is to add
all the terms in the sequence. So we have,

17 + 15 + 13 + 11 + 9 + 7 + 5 + 3 + 1 = 81

Thus, there are 81 logs in a pile of wood.

The sum of the first n terms of an arithmetic sequence is called an arithmetic series. Hence
for the sequence 17, 15,13,11,...1 its corresponding series is 117 + 15 + 13 + 11 ,...+ 1 .

It is tedious to find the sum of the n terms of an arithmetic sequence especially if we are
dealing with a bigger number of terms, hence a formula in this context may help. So,let us now
derive the formula for the arithmetic series.

Let us denote the sum as and we can write out the terms as

This same sum can be written in reverse order as

Add the corresponding terms of these two expressions for to get

The right hand side of this expression contains terms of , so that

Simplifying, we have

Since , the formula becomes

Using the derived formula, we can solve the earlier presented problem.
The arithmetic sequence is 17, 15,13,11,9, 7, 5, 3,1.

Given: a1 = 17, d = -2, n = 9

Find: S9
Solution:

After solving the problem using the formula, you noticed that we came up with the same
result. Is the formula a great help?
ARE YOU READY TO PRACTICE?

Directions:
Use the formula for arithmetic series to answer the following problems.

1.Find the sum of the first 16 terms of an arithmetic sequence 3, 8, 13, 18,...
2.Find the sum of the first 10 terms of an arithmetic sequence with a1 = 34 and d = -3.
3.Find the sum of the arithmetic series 16 + 24 + ... + 144.
4.Find the sum of the integers from 1 to 40 inclusive.

Let us check your answer.

Consider the following solution for each number.

1. Find the sum of the first 16 terms of an arithmetic sequence 3, 8, 13, 18,...

Given: a1 = 3; n = 16; d = 5
Find : S16
Solution : Substituting these values to the formula, we have

Hence, the sum of the first 16 terms of an arithmetic sequence 3, 8, 13, 18,...is 648.

2.Find the sum of the first 10 terms of an arithmetic sequence with a1 = 34 and d = -3.

Given: a1 = 34 ; n = 10; d = -3
Find : S10

Solution: Substituting these values to the formula, we have

Thus, the sum of the first 10 terms of an arithmetic sequence with a1 = 34 and
d = -3 is 205.

3. Find the sum of the arithmetic series 16 + 24 + ... + 144.

Given: a1 = 16 ; an = 144; d = 8
Find : n and Sn

Solution: To find the number of terms (n) use the formula ,

( derived from )

Since n = 17, so we need to find S17 .Substitute the given data to the formula.

Hence, the sum of the arithmetic series 16 + 24 + ... + 144 is 1360.

4.Find the sum of the integers from 1 to 40 inclusive.
Given: a1 = 1 ; d = 1; n = 40; an = 40
Find : S40
Solution: Substituting these values to the formula, we have

Thus, the sum of the integers from 1 to 40 inclusive is 820.
