What Is Research and The Goals of Research
What Is Research and The Goals of Research
(10 points)
- From my own understanding, Research is the process of gathering and investigating information or data to solve a specific
problem that are occurring to our daily lives and research is a way to preserve and improvement of the quality of human life.
Doing research is important to our lives because in our modern civilization all the technological and scientific commodities are the
result of thousand year research, for example the mechanical ventilation, in prehistoric time there is no such thing as ventilation
support for patient experiencing COPD, with the trial and error the civilized people create they come up a way to discover an
answer to this problem.
- One of the goal of research is to discover new facts or clue about known phenomena, by discovering new facts we created a
result which lead to new creation. Another goal of research is to improve the existing techniques or knowledge and develop a new
instruments or products for instance this new gadgets or devices that we get every year is the result of research. Another goal is
to discover a pathways of action of known substances and elements like for example, medicinal plants or drugs that we buy in
pharmacy, the different effect it gave to a human or animals. When discovering new facts we also expanding our existing body
knowledge from previous research. Lastly, researching gives as a way to live a life easier for example, transportation in
prehistoric time they use horse or carriages but now there is the creation of machine to create vehicles such as cars, motorcycles,
cruises, airplanes, and etc. In addition, in kitchen in the past, there is no such things as gasoline, they uses woods to cook but in
the twenty first century there goes the creation of electric gas stove.
2. In the logical arrangement, what are the stages/phases of doing research? Describe each phase. (20 points)
- 1. to determine the problem - ask the question “what is the problem?”, is there a problem?
- 2. to form a hypothesis - give a possible or alternative solution
- 3. literature review - to make sure there is really an existing problem
- 4. to design the study - how will the researcher approach the problem
- 5. develop instruments for collecting data - it is to make sure the data gathered is valid
- 6. collect the data
- 7. after collecting analyze the data
- 8. determine the implications and conclusion and findings - this will come the question “so what?”, make sure the findings is
accurate
- 9. recommendations - to make realistic suggestion to future researchers.
3. What are the things to consider in choosing a research problem? (10 points)
- when choosing a research problem researcher need to make sure it answers the 5W: what, why, where, when, and whom.
- What, what is the need to investigate? or what are we investigating for? concerns about the subject matter
- Why, why is there an investigation? Concerns the purpose of the problem for investigation
- Where, where is the study to be conducted? The place or locale where your research to be conducted
- When, when is the study to be carried out? Concerns the period of time or when is the date be gathered
- and Whom, whom are gathered the data from? Population or universe from whom the data are to be collected.

4. State 3 research problems related to Respiratory Therapy you would like to pursue in Clinical Research courses. State the
main problem and the possible specific problems. Present these in tabular form; the first column is for the main problem, the
second column is for the specific problems, and the third column provides the reason for selecting such problems. (30 points) .
