Precast Concrete U Drains

U-drains are precast concrete structures used for drainage. They are available in various sizes and can be used indoors or outdoors. U-drains are factory-made to be of superior quality and suitable for fast construction. They include cover slabs designed for different load conditions and are engineered according to various industry standards. U-drains are easily installed by laying them on compacted soil and connecting sections with rebar and grout.

Specifications

MATERIAL SPECIFICATION
 Concrete : Grade 40 to Grade 45

 Steel : Fe500

 Nominal cover : 25mm

REQUIREMENTS
 Bulk density of backfill soil should be 18kN/m3

 Backfill material adjacent to invert wall should be of granular type

 Backfilling and compaction to be performed layer by layer alternatively on

either side of the trench until the top of the trench.

DESIGN CRITERIA
Structure designs of the U-Drain are in accordance to:

 BS 5400 : Part 4 : 1990

Handling

Holes are provided in the ribs of the trenches. Clamps are fixed using
bolts (as shown in figure) and then lifted by a crane. It is advisable to lift
at 60 degree.

Laying

 U-Drains are supposed to be kept on level and stable ground or

timber bearer to avoid cracking due to undesired localized load.
 U-Drains are to be laid on a layer of well compacted granular soil
and there should be no settling of soil.
 For a cushioning effect and to level it, it is better to put a layer of
quarry dust.

Placing
 Trenches are supposed to be kept on level and stable ground or timber
bearer to avoid cracking due to undesired localized load.
 Cable Trenches are to be laid on a layer of well compacted granular soil
and there should be no settling of soil.

Jointing

 Rebar’s are drilled in the joints

 Two adjacent trenches are connected using a chicken mesh and the
joints are grouted
 Joints are water proofed after the grout sets

Drains in Sloped Topography

 On sloped topography, the required gradient at the invert level can

be maintained by filling a lean concrete on the floor of the U-Drain
as shown in the image.

As per the Slope the

depth of the drain vary

Cover Slab

 Cover slab is designed for various loads (light loads and heavy loads) based on
requirement.
 Corner protection with MS flat is given based on the thickness of the slab.
 In traffic prone areas with continuous movement of vehicles, the cover slab is
seated on a 2mm neoprene rubber strip to damp the vibration and for better
grip.
