Physical Science G11

The document describes an experiment that investigates the effect of surface area on reaction rates. In part A, an entire effervescent tablet was dissolved in water, taking 20 minutes and 30 seconds. In part B, the tablet was powdered first to increase the surface area, then dissolved. This took 15 minutes and 48 seconds. Powdering the tablet increased the surface area, leading to more frequent molecular collisions and a faster reaction rate. Increasing the surface area of a solid reactant results in a higher reaction rate.

GROUP 1
The Effect of Surface Area/ Particle Size on Reaction Rates
Part A. Whole Tablet
1.Fill one cup with 100mL 2.Drop one (1) whole
of room temperature effervescent tablet into the
water. cup of water. Record the time
the effervescent tablet
completely dissolves.

Part B: Powdered Tablet

1.Place one (1) effervescent 2. Transfer the powdered tablet into a container.
tablet into a mortar and
grind
to a fine powder

3.Fill one cup with 100 mL of room temperature water.

4.Put the powdered tablet in the cup of water.

Table 1.1.1: The Effect of Surface Area/ Particle Size on Reaction Rates
Reaction Condition Time the tablet was fully dissolved Observations

Whole effervescent tablet in a cup of 20:30 mins.  The effervescent tablet

water dissolve in water.
 It was easily mix.
powdered effervescent tablet in a cup of 15.48 mins.  particle size gets smaller
water  surface area increases
 It float on the top of the water

Guide Questions:
1.Which reaction is faster? Why?
Answer: Whole effervescent tablet in a cup of water. Reactions in phases that easily
mix, such as gases and liquids, occur much faster than reactions between solids. The
extent of mixing of the reactants influences the frequency of molecular collisions - if
reactants are more thoroughly mixed, the molecules will collide more often and thus
react faster.
2.How does the surface area/ particle size affect the reaction rate?
Answer: particle size of a fixed mass of a solid reactant becomes smaller, the total
exposed surface area becomes larger, the rate of reaction increases.
