Dead Phone Testing1

1. The document provides steps to test a dead iPhone 6/s/plus that is not powering on or responding to a computer. 2. Key tests include using a DC power supply to check for 5V at test points and confirming proper voltages are reaching the Tristar chip and PMIC. 3. If voltages check out properly but the device still won't boot, further testing of CPU circuit voltages is recommended to isolate the cause.

Dead iPhone Testing

5V0_USB
P age |2

Tristar Pin 5V

So we have an iPhone 6 no power dead, no image and no computer USB response.

Same principle applies to other models:

This is not the quickest of methods but its not meant to be.

Lets start.

Dead iPhone 6/s/plus series

Possible causes:
P age |3

1. Short on either VCC main or VBatt lines this will reduce voltage input to almost 1.00 v at how ever
many amps set (ie) 2amps

Possible causes:

1. Short on either VCC main or VBatt lines this will reduce voltage input to almost 1.00 v at how ever
many amps set (ie) 2amps

Result: No power input is available to power the device, this will not be visible under a normal charger
and will just seem not to charge.

2. Faulty Dock Flex

Result: No power input is available to power the device.

3. USB / Charging circuit failure.

Result: No Main voltage is generated by Charging circuit. ie. VCC MAIN

4: CPU Main I2C failure. Possible causes:

1. Short on either VCC main or VBatt lines this will reduce voltage input to almost 1.00 v at however
many amps set (ie) 2amps

Result: No power input is available to power the device, this will not be visible under a normal charger
and will just seem not to charge.

Number four is for another post...

Power up Test:
P age |4

DC Power Supply set at 5v-USB OUTPUT / 2amps and with known good lightning cable insert to usb
dock jack, battery still attached.

Preliminary Tests in housing:

Prompt to boot via usb charger Test: With a good Tristar and battery this should boot the trigger
circuit with no power button pressed.

NOTE WITH A FULLY DEAD BATTERY SOURCE, EXPECT THE BATTERY ICON . Also shows good usb /
charging circuit.

This will draw 1.0amp ~ 0.80ma if good and boot all the way into to iOs.

No bootup via above method but no short :

Check Dock Flex, battery, Tristar USB / charging circuit. Vcc Main Cap C2301

Testing / Proving 5v at the J1817 FPC dock side TP2501 can allow us to jump into Vcc main at C2301 to
test for main voltage. No voltage : Check power source. (Tigris)

Confirm clear or short for Vcc main on this cap also. NO DCPS attached....

This (Prompt to boot via usb charger Test) also allows us to eliminate a faulty dock flex, fpc and allows
us to determine the above, as attaching dcps to Vbatt will short out with a Vcc main short preventing
live tests.

So vcc main or vbat line is shorted?

Well testing in diode mode on Vbat shows good resistance at say 0.411mv to gnd but when applied to
power would reduce to 0.00mv or 2.69 amps @ 1.0v but as live cannot be tested for this mode. More
about this further on....

This means that Vbatt is good and when power is applied its lines are now connected to a bad vcc
P age |5

main via Q1403 so its VCC Main that's short and not Vbat.

This can be confirmed testing a Vcc main C2301 (in housing )cap which I would imagine will be
0.00ohms / 0.00mv to gnd.

Note: you could link them both out of housing also by the mosfet switch and diode test and apply
voltage for heat .

DCPS Behavior:

1) 5.0v at 0.00amps = no power consumed - no prompt to boot - lightning cable, dock flex, FPC
connector, component / IC damage, 0.00v battery. Vcc main short

2) 5.0v / 1.0v at 2.69amps = Backlight circuit fault, VCC Main short, Water Damage

3) 5.0v / 1 ~ 0.80amps - prompt to boot = OK

Still no power or bootup read on...

 Lightning cable good

 Dock flex good
 Battery good

I like to test voltage at the Battery connector prior to installing a good battery on a possibly bad line.

Test:

Resistance to ground on vbat pin .411mv or so is fine 0.00mv is short but not necessarily on this line as
it also connects to Vcc main. and also dependant on state of transistor Q1403

NOTE: DIODE MODE WILL READ GOOD EVEN IF VCC MAIN IS SHORT AS NO POWER IS APPLIED TO
ACTION THE MOSFET THAT ALLOWS BOTH VVC MAIN AND VBATT TO CONNECT.
P age |6

Test:

Again with power via usb dock connector test the Vbat pin for voltage.

3.68v and rising is good and a good Tristar chip showing battery charging circuit is in normal working
condition.

0.345v is a bad Tristar and needs replacing.

Test

VBUS voltage 5V0_usb at test point TP2501 = 5v

P age |7

Still no voltage response and 0.00v at Battery FPC.

Now we follow the source to its destination .

5v usb in -----------------tigris - u1401-----vcc main

|

|--------mosfet - Q1701----------Tristar

Now we could test every step from J1817 and its local capacitor on PP_5V0_USB all the way to their destination
points but for now we will jump forward into the circuit and test for 5v at C1408 (TIGRIS SUPPLY) and C1704
(Tristar SWITCH SUPPLY) this test on C1704 will prove that Q1701 is operating and 5v supply is there to Tristar
as well as the Tigris C1408 proving 5v to tigris.
P age |8

C1417 Should be 3.7~4.2v vcc main voltage. No voltage or low means short or bad tigris output.
P age |9

So we have 5v at both tigris and Tristar but still no device response.

Note. if 1.8v is not present then no VCC main will be generated as 1.8v needs to be present prior to
VCC main..

We can also check the PMID caps are at input/boost voltage 4-5v normal operation (buck converter)

At this stage the device should be able to charge a battery and be consuming current with pc comms
if iOS is good and not corrupt.

If we are getting Vcc main voltage then we check the next section of power generation via the PMIC
voltage rails but first as we are here lets check Tristar voltages. If no Vcc main then these will not be
present.

So far we have :

We have 5v via the USB to both Tristar PP_TRISTAR_PIN and Tigris

We have 3-4v Vcc Main voltage

We still need more to boot this puppy...

Checking Tristar as we are already in the area we check for :

P a g e | 10

Tristar supply voltages:

PP_TRISTAR_PIN C1704 = 4-5V generated by 5v USB via dock and lightning cable

PP1V8_SDRAM C1739 = 1.8V if not ....check output is being generated by PMIC

PP3V0_TRISTAR C1700 = 3.0V if not check output is being generated by PMIC

These voltages may not be present if Tristar is shorted or damaged. Remove Tristar and check voltages
again.

If all are present then we move on to the second stage power supply generation...

At this stage the chances are the device should have all available voltages for booting as PMIC , Main
Power and Charging USB controller works.

CPU is most probably good as it resets the PMIC and so on and voltages generated by the pmic are
present.
P a g e | 11

There are more voltage rails from the PMIC to check:

First to check PMU IC output voltages:

PP_CPU 0.775V-1.0V

PP_VAR_SOC 0.9V-0.95V

PP_GPU 0.9V-0.95V = diode / ohms reading 0.92mv / 52.6ohms

PP1V8_SDRAM 1.8V CPU

PP1V2_SDRAM 1.2V CPU

PP0V95_FIXED_SOC 0.95V CPU

PP1V8 1.8V CPU

PP1V2 1.2V

PP1V2_OSCAR 1.2V

PP1V8_OSCAR 1.8V

PP1V8_GRAPE 1.8V

If all voltages are present then proceed to check CPU circuit voltages: ic ref differs on models (i wrote
this originally for a 6s and changed it to a 6)
