OGC Lab Report 101

The document describes an experiment to find the center of gravity of an irregularly shaped lamina. It involves cutting a bristol board into a shape, making holes in it, hanging it from different points using a pendulum, and drawing lines where the thread hangs freely. These lines will intersect at the center of gravity. Precautions are needed when cutting and making holes. Sources of error include not letting the pendulum come to a complete stop. The conclusion is that the experiment successfully found the center of gravity, validating the hypothesis.

Hypothesis

Using the COG experiment one can find the center of gravity for a lamina

Aim
The aim of this experiment is to find the center of gravity of the lamina

Apparatus
● Thumbtacks
● Thread
● Pendulum
● Lamina (Bristol Board)
● Ruler
● Pencil
● Needle
● Stone
● Scissors

Diagram

Method/Procedure
● First, I cut bristol board into a figure of irregular shape and made 3 holes with a needle
on the outer part of the lamina and labeled the holes as 1,2,3
● Secondly, I hung the pendulum on a thumb tack, then I pushed the thumbtack through
point 1 on the lamina and stuck it onto the wooden door
● Lastly, I allowed the pendulum to stop swaying and used a ruler and pencil to draw a line
along the lamina where the thread hung freely
● I repeated the last step for the other points

Results and Calculations

The Centre of gravity was found at the point where the lines intersected

Discussion
Precautions- Use safety gloves when cutting the lamina and when making holes in the lamina
with the needle as one can get injured
Sources of Error- Human errors may occur, such as not allowing the pendulum to stop swaying
completely

Conclusion
The hypothesis and Aim were proven to be correct as the center of gravity was found
