This formula is given by the Product Rule.
Product Rule
If f(x) = u(x) · v(x), where u and v are differentiable functions of x, then

f ′ ( x ) = u ( x )  v ′ ( x ) + v ( x )  u′ ( x )

Thus the derivative of a product of two functions is the first function times the
derivative of the second plus the second function times the derivative of the
first.
