Part-A (10 x 2 = 20 Marks)
1. Explain the concepts of mutual Information
2. A source generates messages with probabilities 0.2,0.1, 0.1,0.4 and 0.2. Calculate source
entropy.
3. What are the two types of quantization errors that occur in delta modulation?
4. State any 4 properties of a line code.
5. What are the essential requirements of an equalizer?
6. What is correlative coding?
7. What are the drawbacks of binary PSK system?
8. For bit stream of 010010111 plot QPSK waveform
9. What is the need of channel coding?
10. The generator polynomial G(D) for a (7,4) cyclic code is G(D) =1+D2+D3 Find the code
vector for the data vector [1 0 1 0]

11.a. (i) Define Entropy. Derive the Entropy properties and its relation (6)
(ii) A discrete memoryless source emits 5 symbols with probabilities 0.2, 0.2, 0.2, 0.2, 0.2.
Construct codes using Shannon Fano and calculate efficiency and redundancy (7)

13.a. Describe the Nyquist criteria for distortion less baseband transmission and discuss about

14.a. Describe the generation and detection of coherent binary PSK signals, also derive the
expression for the probability of error. (13)

14.b. Outline the generation and detection of a QPSK signal and derive the probability of error

15.a. Consider a (7,4) linear block code with the parity check matrix H is given by

(i) Construct code words for this (7,4) code


(ii) Show that this code is Hamming code
(iii) Decode the received word 0101100. (13)

(ii) Derive the PSD of a Unipolar NRZ line code (7)

16.b. (i) A delta modulator with a fixed step size of 0.75V is given a sinusoidal message signal. If the
sampling frequency is 30 times the Nyquist rate, determine the maximum permissible amplitude
of the message signal if slope-overload is to be avoided. (8)

(ii) A 1 KHz signal of voice is sampled at 10 KHz using 8-bit PCM and a DM system. Find in
each case (i) Signaling rate (ii) Bandwidth required. (7)

