MEASURING

MASS/WEIGHT
Weight is a measure of the earth’s gravitational
pull. Mass is the measure of the amount of matter
that objects are made of. The mass of an object
does not change but the weight does. Weight and
mass are not the same thing. However, on Earth,
the mass of an object is always proportional to the
weight of the object. In this course, we shall
assume that weight and mass mean the same
thing.
The most common measures of weight (mass) in
the metric system are the kilogram, gram, and
milligram. The gram is the basic unit of mass in the
metric system. The mass (weight) of milligram of
water is nearly equal to 1 gram, and a milliliter is the
volume of a cube whose length, width, and height
each measures 1 centimeter.
1 kilogram (kg) = 1,000 grams (g)
1 pound (lb.) ≈ 0.45 kilogram
1 kilogram ≈ 2.2 pounds
Rice and the other large foodstuff such as fish and meat
are weighed in terms of kilograms.

A milligram is equivalent to 𝑔𝑟𝑎𝑚. A milligram (mg) is a

very small unit and is used only in medical prescriptions
and some areas of science. For example, spasmo
canulase tablet contains, among other things, 1 milligram
of methixene hydrochloride, 50 milligrams of glutamic
acid, and 100 mg of hydrochloride pencreatin.
For objects that are quite heavy, the metric tonne unit is
used. 1 metric tonne = 1,000 kg. Since 1 kg ≈ 2.2 lb.,
1 metric tonne = 2, 200 lb., or 1.1 tons ( 1 ton = 2, 000 lb.).
The tables and charts can be used to find equivalent
measures of weight.
