Assignment 1
Assignment 1
1. A vessel having a capacity of 0.05 m3 contains a mixture of saturated water and saturated steam at
a temperature of 245°C. The mass of the liquid present is 10 kg. Find the following: (a) The
pressure, (b) The mass, (c) The specific volume, (d) The specific enthalpy, (e) The specific entropy,
and (f) The specific internal energy. ANS. a) 36.5 bar or 3.65 MPa, b) 10.69 kg, c) 0.004654 m 3/kg,
d) 1172.77 KJ/kg, e) 2.9623 KJ/kg K, f) 1155.78 KJ/kg.
2. What amount of heat would be required to produce 4.4 kg of steam at a pressure of 6 bar and
temperature of 250°C from water at 30°C? Take specific heat for superheated steam as 2.2 kJ/kg K.
ANS. 12454.6 KJ
3. Determine the mass of 0.15 m3 of wet steam at a pressure of 4 bar and dryness fraction 0.8. Also
calculate the heat of 1 m3 of steam. ANS. 0.4058 kg, 6252.9 KJ
4. 1000 kg of steam at a pressure of 16 bar and 0.9 dry is generated by a boiler per hour. The steam
passes through a superheater via boiler stop valve where its temperature is raised to 380°C. If the
temperature of feed water is 30°C, determine:(a) The total heat supplied to feed water per hour to
produce wet steam. (b) The total heat absorbed per hour in the superheater. Take specific heat for
superheated steam as 2.2 kJ/kg K. ANS. a) 2473.08 x 103 KJ, b) 586.24 x 103 KJ
5. Find the specific volume, enthalpy and internal energy of wet steam at 18 bar, dryness fraction 0.85.
ANS. 0.0935 m3/kg, 2508.35 KJ/kg, 2340.75 KJ/kg
