Working
The timer is used for instantaneous or delayed motor startup after a short-time power failure (max. 6 sec). The start
occurs immediately if power supply is disrupted for less than 0.2 sec. If the power failure lasts longer, the relay activates
its memory for a time that can be set to 0.2 to 6 sec, after which no automatic restart is possible. If power supply is
restored while the memory period is elapsing, the relay commands a motor restart with a delay time from power supply
restoration that can be set to 0.2 to 60 sec. A system stop cancels the memory function after 50 ms, and therefore the
stop signal should be on for at least this time. The relay is non-sensitive to any control voltage fluctuation or disruption
during or after the motor stop.

Brown Out
A dip in voltage causes electro-mechanical devices such as relays and contactors to drop out and electronic devices
such as timers, orogrammable relays, PLC’s remain energized. As a result of this the switch sequence of the panel is
lost. This can lock out all or a part of the control system causing the entire system to malfunction.
The ‘Brown-Out’ Timer also known as ‘Mains restoration auto restart timer’ is used for detection of voltage dips or
momentary loss of supply known as ‘Brown out’ and initiation of a control panel reset following the Brown out.
Description CAT No

9
• STAR DELTA:
On application of supply voltage, the output Star relay energizes instantly. On completion of the preset
delay time, the output Delta relay energizes after a fixed pause time. This pause time (60, 90, 120, 150 ms)
provides the shortest possible 'current off' pause and simultaneously ensures smooth change over.
T TP
• SIGNAL ON DELAY :
On application of input signal to the timer, the preset delay time period starts. On completion of the preset time,
S
the output is switched ON and remains ON till the input signal is present.

Definite Time:
• Under load protection
• Selectable start time and trip time
Functional Description:
Under load protection: It is provided by undercurrent trip. It is suitable for small pumps to avoid dry running,
cavitations, etc.
Phase loss protection: Negative sequence current due to phase unbalance or phase loss may damage rotor winding.
Relay gives excellent protection for phase imbalance or phase loss.
Phase reversal protection: Relay detects the phase reversal during starting only. For this feature motor start duration
should be more than 0.2 seconds.
Reset:
Auto: In case of auto reset mode, relay resets approximately 15 minutes after trip in case of 3 - phase products and 10
minutes after trip in case of 1 - phase products.
Manual: For all trips relay could be reset immediately. For manual reset press and hold reset switch for 2 seconds.
Inverse Time:
Overload protection: Relay implements the thermal image of the motor during heating and cooling periods. If the motor
current exceeds 1.1 times set value of the current, relay trips the motor as soon as the value of thermal capacity exceeds
threshold value.
Locked rotor protection: Protects motor from locked rotor conditions due to mechanical fault or due to high inertia load.
Test function: It can be used to simulate cold state overload trip in case of 1- phase product and to simulate phase
reverse trip in case of 3 – phase products. For test sequence press and hold the test switch for the duration of 5 seconds.
Definite Time:
Overload protection: Relay trips if the motor current exceeds 1.1 times set value of the current for duration of trip time
during motor start up relay trips if motor current exceeds 1.1 times of set value for duration of addition of start time and
trip time.
Test function: This function can be used to check the trip time accuracy of the relay. For test sequence press and hold
the TEST switch. Relay trips after completion of set values of start time and trip time.
Note:
1) For (1 A to 3 A) range use (3 A to 9 A) current range product with 3 wire turns
2) Applicable for 3 - phase products only.

3 Phase Functionality:
Product is designed to detect phase sequence in three phase power system. When phase sequence of three phase
is correct (L2 with 1200 lag with respect to L1 and phase L3 with 1200 lag with respect to L2), then relay connection
between terminals 25 and 28 closes. Otherwise contacts are open.
Thermistor Functionality:
Thermistor relay protects and controls motors and alternators fitted with PTC thermistor sensors. Motor heating is directly
measured by temperature sensors that are incorporated in starter windings. This ensures a direct control in following
operating conditions: Heavy duty, high switching frequency, single phasing, high ambient temperature and insufficient
cooling. Relay connection between 15 and 18 disconnects when probe resistance exceeds 3.6 k, ± 5% and cannot
reset until resistance is lower than 1.6 k, ± 5% . Auxiliary supply voltage should be applied to device between terminals
L1-L3 to produce connection.
SENSOR SHORT: Probe cable short-circuit is detected by device if resistance is lower than 20, ± 4 and resets when
probe resistance is greater than 40 ± 4.
SENSOR OPEN: Probe cable open circuit is detected by device if resistance is above 10 k ± 5% and cannot reset until
resistance is lower than 1.6 k ±5%. The resistance at 250 C of the probe circuit must be within 40 < Resistance < 1.5
k range
AUTO RESET: For AUTO reset operation, keep pot position on AUTO. Device will reset automatically when total loop
resistance of series connected thermistors drops below 1.6 k ±5%.
MANUAL RESET: Manual reset can be reached by keeping the pot on MANUAL. Device will reset manually by changing
pot position to AUTO. When the total loop resistance of series connected thermistors drops below 1.6 k± 5%.
REMOTE RESET: For remote reset operation connect a switch across Y1 and Y2 terminals, device will be in auto reset
mode, if switch is open, otherwise device will be in manual reset mode.
ADVANTAGE OF REMOTE RESET: If fault occurs and recovers while the device is in manual reset mode, then user can
put the device in auto mode temporarily and switch ON the relay and put the device back in manual reset mode. So,
attending the device can be avoided.

TECHNICAL DATA
FUNCTIONAL DESCRIPTION:
Earth leakage relay is a microcontroller based device meant to measure low level of leakage current and isolate the faulty
circuit from the system. Leakage current is sensed through core balance current transformer. Definite time trip occurs
when earth leakage current exceeds the trip time which is adjustable by means of a front mounted potentiometer from
100 ms to 5 s. The red LED “EL” indicates the presence of earth leakage.
CT Connection:
All conductors to be protected shall pass through the core balance current transformer. Main winding of current
transformer and test winding should be connected to the product terminals by a twisted pair of 1 mm2 wires. The CT
wires should be placed adequately away from high current carrying conductors or source of strong magnetic field to
avoid noise pickup. The earth leakage relay also verifies CT connection. If CT main or test winding is open, red LED “CT”
becomes ON.
Operating Modes:
Relay has three different operating modes, namely Fail Safe Non Latching (FSNL), Non Fail Safe Non Latching (NFS-NL)
and Fail Safe Latching (FSL). Operating mode for Earth Leakage Relay has to be set before power ON by front mounted
potentiometer. Relay is insensitive to any changes in operating mode after Power ON. Contact details for each mode are
as mentioned below.
FSNL : The relay contacts 15 - 18 are open in absence of auxiliary voltage, closed in healthy condition, and open in
presence of an EL fault.
NFSNL : The relay contacts 15 - 18 are open in absence of auxiliary voltage and in healthy condition, and closed in
presence of an EL fault.
FSL: The relay contacts 15-18 are open in absence of auxiliary voltage, and closed in unlatched healthy condition,
and open in presence of an EL fault. Latch mode causes the relay to latch contacts in the fault position. Contacts are
unlatched by resetting the relay.
Reset: In case of FSL mode, relay keeps trip memory in absence of auxiliary voltage; but does not latch relay contact.
Relay reset can be obtained by pressing TST / RST push button or remote TST / RST switch only after earth leakage
disappears.
Test Function: Test function can be used to simulate earth leakage trip using external CT with test winding. For test
sequence, press and hold the test push button for duration of trip time selected.
Remote Test: For remote test, connect an external push button switch between Y1and Y2. For test sequence, press and
hold the external push button switch for duration of time set.

Cam Operated Rotary Switches used to perform Make and Break operation in a sequential way by rotating
the switch to different positions.
The Cam, which closes and opens the contacts, has rotary movement to multiple positions, thereby multiple
circuit functions can be controlled.
Further, the flexibility in the switch type selection covering various current / voltage ratings and options to
select the number of contacts, is an added advantage. This ensures that a right switch is chosen for the desired
application. CAM switches thus offer complete design flexibility to assemble complex switching programs,
contact ratings and customize all switching applications.
Moreover the Cam switches are suitable for AC as well as DC switching applications.
The basic operating mechanism of the Cam switch is required to suit intended application coupled with
“Quick-Make”, “Quick-Make-Quick-Break” and “Spring Return”. Operating mechanisms are offered to cover
a wide range requirements.
The Cam switches offer versatile mounting options in addition to standard panel/flush mounting and other
special features like single hole, door interlocking, padlock, lock and key for various needs. Wide options
available are: knob, front plate color and customized marking on the marking plate. This gives compatability
to the panel design and thus eliminates the need of the separate label on the panel.
The superior quality of engineering materials and “Double Butt” contacts with silver bimetal on copper/brass
provide stable electrical performance. The high-grade engineering plastics with high tracking index like Nylon,
Celcon and glass filled polyamide for the components ensures greater mechanical strength.
Advanced manufacturing processes for Cam switch components under stringent quality conditions ensures
durability, reliability and enhanced life and safe operations for a very long time.

APPLICATIONS
ISOLATORS
These are basically ON-OFF switches, which can be used to isolate the power to a particular area of operation. These isolator
switches are available in a wide range from single pole to 12 pole design. Isolators with spring return are also available upto
4 poles. Preclose contacts are used for safety circuits and for neutral and earth line.
Isolators generally come under AC1/AC21 duty. Some times 3 pole ON-OFF switches are used to switch ON and OFF the motor, with
fuse protection, when they must be rated for AC3/AC23A duty.
CHANGEOVER SWITCHES
Changeover switches, also called double throw switches, they are used to operate two different circuits with different numbers of inputs
and output.
Changeover switches without jumper are used for connecting two different circuits, from two different sources (potential free contacts).
It may be due to two different operating voltages or any other incompatible lines.
All double throw switch contacts by default are of Break Before Make type (BBM) to avoid overlapping of different circuits. Overlapping
changeover contacts can be offered against requirement.
MULTISTEP SWITCHES
These switches can also be called as Pole-Way switches, as they are generally described by Poles and Ways. Multi step switch does
the function of connecting different circuits in a common supply or vice-versa.
Multistep switches are basically two way switches available in 1 Pole, 2 Pole and 3 Pole versions.
GANG SWITCHES
These switches are called Gang switches, as they increase the capacity of circuits by ganging. They are used for serialing and/or
paralleling to derive different circuit capacity. The power of battery supply can be increased by serialing. The power of resistor can be
increased by paralleling.
SELECTOR SWITCHES
With the help of these switches one can
— Measure currents in different circuits (with or without current transformer) with a single ammeter and a switch.
— Measure voltages between phases, and phase and neutral, with one switch.
— Measure voltages and currents of a circuit with one voltmeter, one single switch.
CONTROL SWITCHES
Control switches are a unique alternative for many of the “PUSH BUTTON” stations, where it is preferred to control a system with one
switch instead of many push buttons. Many positions of the switch are possible to derive combinations. These control switches are
rated for AC15/DC13.
AC15 switches need to carry an inrush current of 10 times the normal operating current, while energising solenoids and coils. Hence
our switches are suitably derated for AC15, while specifying the normal operating current.
Control switches are used to energise contactors for controlling motor operations. Most of the switches are of spring return type to
enable latching the circuit with contactor NO contact to facilitate tripping by contactor tripping device.
MOTOR SWITCHES
These switches directly operate the motor with AC3 or AC4 duty.
They are mainly used for motor forward-reversing, star-delta, two speed forward reverse. Special switches designed to operate with a
contactor with built-in tripping feature on power failure and overload are available.

Breaker Control Switches
Under this 3 types are widely used
a) Spring return
In LMD, the contact block is divided into two, as main contacts and LMD contacts.
LMD contacts will be closed with the handle is moved to CLOSE side/TRIP side and
• Spring return to neutral
the contact closing will be retained even though the handle is returned to NEUTRAL position from both the sides
by virtue of spring return nature. When the handle is rotated in the opposite direction
then only the LMD contact will open. • Memory feature of the
previous operation(LMD)
Thus the LMD mechanism enables the switch to have a memory feature of the previous
• Permits only one close
operation, which is considered to be a very essential for circuit breaker applications. operation(sequential lock)
In case of sequence lock, it acts like a mechanical interlock in the switch not permitting
two consecutive “CLOSE” operations. When you turn the handle to CLOSE position the
handle will be back to NEUTRAL due to spring return action. Again the handle movement
on the CLOSE side will be locked. When the handle is moved to TRIP position then
only rotation to CLOSE position is permitted.
As indicated all the above feature models can also be supported with external lock and
key arrangement with key lockable and removable only at NEUTRAL position and the
handle shall not be turned when the key is in locked condition.

CUSTOMISED PROGRAMME FORMATION
The design and construction of switches gives flexibility for making customised programmes within a very short
time. Basically an engineer trying to specify the customised programme should concentrate on the following
points :
Please Note :-
(a) Each position should be identified and marking required in those postions should be specified.
The possible latching angles (angle between positons) is 30o, 45o, 60o, 90o.
Spring returns are also possible for upto half the latching angle.
(b) Total number of contacts can be decided based on the actual need.
You may arrange to your convenience and number them as 1/2, 3/4, 5/6.... While making the switch, we
may rearrange the contacts to use solid jumpers to avoid loose wire jumpers
(c) Fill up the programme sheet by marking ‘X’ at places where contacts have to close.
For example, refer sketches given below:
Contacts
remain closed
Two contacts
make before break
Spring return to
RUN from STOP
& START
(d) Fourth step is to decide the switch type (Ampere Rating). Refer Technical Data.
(e) Decide the mounting style. Refer overall dimensions
(f) Decide handle, front plate and other accessories. Refer overall dimensions.

WIRES
House Wires :
L&T House Wires are made up of plain annealed copper conductor, as per IS: 8130-1984. The insulation
is of FR PVC compound. These wires are suitable for all commercial and domestic wiring applications.
The Flame retardant (FR) PVC compound offer an additional safety. It has higher oxygen and temperature
Indices. These properties restrict propagation of flame and wires do not catch fire up to 250 degree
centigrade at ambient oxygen level.
These wires are twin coated for superior insulation. The house wires have uniform diameter and are
available in standard lengths of 90 and 180 meter coils.
L&T Flat cables are rigid and are designed to supply power under all adverse conditions in the field
for which L&T switchgears has proven track record of over 4 decades. The flat cables are made up of
bright plain multistranded annealed copper conductor, as per IS:8130/1984. These cables are available
in 100-meter coils and drums of 500 & 1000 meters.
PVC, which is used in cable manufacturing, is a compound and it mainly consists of:
• PVC Resin
• Plasticizer
• Stabilizer Mainly Tribasic Lead Sulphate
• Filler Calcium Carbonate
• Lubricant Wax
PVC resin contains 55% Chlorine by weight and Chlorine is fire retardant. The only ingredient among
the above which is inflammable is plasticizer. The resultant compound is fire retardant and it burns when
the flame is applied but the fire gets extinguished as soon as the flame is removed.
Oxygen index is used as a measure of flame retardant property of the insulating material. The oxygen
index indicates percentage of oxygen required for supporting combustion of insulating material at room
temperature. The oxygen index of polyethylene is 20% while that of normal PVC compound is 25%.

WIRES
The oxygen index of PVC is further enhanced to 31% by adding antimony trioxide. Generally 3 to 5 parts of antimony trioxide is
added per 100 parts of PVC resin.
Aluminium Trihydrate (ATH) is added in PVC compound in place of Calcium Carbonate as filler. When Aluminium Trihydrate (ATH)
is burnt, it emits steam, which acts as fire retardant and smoke suppressor.
Molibden Trioxide and Zinc Borate are added in PVC compound as a smoke suppressor. Due to these additions, the normal smoke
density which is about 85% absorption drops to 55% absorption.
As the name suggest, these plastic compounds do not contain any Halogen i.e. Chlorine, Bromine, Iodine etc. and hence whenever
they burn, they do not emit any toxic acidic gases.
These compounds are mostly EVA (Ethylene Vinyl Acetate) based compounds. Here Aluminium Trihydrate and Magnesium Hydroxides
and other chemicals are mixed with EVA to give oxygen index of about 35%.
Zero Halogen Flame-Retardant (ZHFR) wires are used where critical control supply is essential during the fire condition also like
lifts, fire alarms, hospitals etc.
L&T FRLS wires are made up of special insulation material with higher oxygen index and temperature index & lower smoke
density rating and acid gas generation.
Temperature index indicates the temperature at which normal oxygen content of 21% in air will support combustion of insulating
material
Typical value of temperature index as per ASTM-D 2863 specification for flame retardant wire is more than 2500 C whereas for
ordinary PVC insulation it is 1500 C
Smoke density indicates the loss of light transmission under the fire of insulation material. Typical value of smoke density rating as
per ASTM-D 2843 specification for flame retardant wire should be < 60%
Acid gas generation indicates the amount of Hydrochloric acid gas evolved from insulation of cable under fire. Typical value of Acid
gas generation as per IEC 754 -1 specification for flame retardant wire is less than 20%.
