EXERCISE 1
GENERALIZATIONS
Represent the following inverse functions through their table of values
 The inverse of a one-to-one function can be represented through its and their graph.
table of values and graph.
1. f-1(x) = x + 3 4. f-1(x) = 8x ─ 1
 The domain of the function is the range of its inverse, and range of 2. f-1(x) = x ─ 5 5. f-1(x) = 2x + 5
the function is the domain of its inverse.
3. f-1(x) = 4x
 The graph of the inverse of the function is its reflection along the
line x=y.
EXAMPLE 2

EXAMPLE 1 Represent through its table of values and its graph.

Represent f-1(x)= x ─ 4 through its table of values and its graph.

SOLUTION:
SOLUTION:

f-1(0)= 0 ─ 4 = -4
x 0 1 2 3 4
-1
f (1)= 1 ─ 4 = -3
f-1(x) -4 -3 -2 -1 0
-1
f (2)= 2 ─ 4 = -2
f-1(3)= 3 ─ 4 = -1
This represents f-1(x)= x ─ 4.
-1
f (4)= 4 ─ 4 = 0

To graph, use the table of values.

This represents
x 0 1/2 1 2 3
.
f-1(x) 1 undefined -1 -1/3 -1/5
