WESTERN PORTAL – 2 Tunnels circa 1.3 km long

ADIT 3N (2,382 m) + 4 Tunnels circa 1.47 to 1.72 km long
Main Fans
Fresh air requirements are calculated based on a minimal airspeed of 0.5 m/s and based on a dilution
rate of 0.05 m3/s/kW, according to the British Standard BS6164:2019.
Calculations are given below:
- For each Main Tunnel:
o Ø2.6m duct:
o Ø3.0m duct
NB: For Main Tunnels, the cross-section calculation is the following: cross-section of 150m² minus the
cross-section occupied by the ducting (respectively 5.3 m² for Ø2.6m duct and 7.1 m² for Ø3.0m) duct.
- For the Adits, return airflow shall be sufficient to dilute pollutant from the 3 actives Main
Tunnels but also for the trucks circulating in the Adit.
Since all 4 tunnels per adit will be ventilated simultaneously, the requirements for the adits will thus
be met: the total supplied airflow of 71.5 m3/s x 4 = 286 m3/s is greater than the required airflow of
243.4 m3/s.
Exhaust Fans
For the optional blast fumes extraction, calculation is made in order to ensure that air quality shall
reach satisfactory level within 30 minutes upon restart of tunnel ventilation after blasting.
The following hypotheses are made:
- Explosive type: ANFO or equivalent
- Explosive use: 1087 kg/ blast
- Explosive/ emulsion ratio: 10% emulsion & 90% ANFO
- Gas emission:
o Emulsion:
§ CO: 17.5 L/kg
o ANFO:
§ CO: 21 L/kg
§ NO2: 23.4 L/kg
- Tunnel length affected by blast fumes emission: 50m

Hypotheses
The following hypotheses are made in order to carry this study:
- Adits Remaining Excavation length: 150m
- Main Tunnel Excavation Lengths:
o Adit 1: L2-1: 800m / L2-2: 2545m
o Adit 2: L2-3: 2155m / L2-4: 2300m
o Adit 3: L3-1: 1730m / L3-2: 1747m
o Adit 4: L3-3: 1473m / L3-4: 1720m
- Working hours per day: 24 hours
- Excavation rate:
o Adit 1: (2545 + 150) meters / 918 days = 2.94 m/day
o Adit 2: (2300 + 150) meters / 915 days = 2.68 m/day
o Adit 3: (1747 + 150) meters / 903 days = 2.10 m/days
o Adit 3N: (1720 + 150) meters / 971 days = 1.80 m/days
- Only the Excavation phase is considered, once a Tunnel length is considered reached base on above
excavation rate, the fan consumption over time is no longer considered.
- For the Adit Remaining Excavation Length, all fans are considered running for calculation convenience.
The power consumption of 3 out of 4 fans on the considered length is then subtracted.
- Fan VFD frequencies are supposedly adjusted at all time to meet the required airflow at the end of the
duct
- Phases were Main Fans are used at 100% speed in order to extract blast fumes are neglected (in case of
Main Fans Only)
- Exhaust Fans are not included in these calculations, since their use is intermittent (blast phase only).
"# & (
- Fan VFD frequency is calculated based on turbomachine power similitude law: (
"$
) = (#
$
Where )1 and )2 are absorbed power in kW
And ,1 and ,2 are frequency in Hz
- Fan, Motor and VFD efficiencies are supposed constant at all times, the following values are retained:
o Fan efficiency: comprised between 82% & 87% (cf. curves & calculation sheets)
o Motor efficiency: 95%
o VFD efficiency: 98%
- Ventilation running time: 24/24 h for Main Fans
- Duct parameters:
o Duct class: A
o Leakage ratio: 10 mm²/m²
o Friction ratio: 0.018
- Climatic conditions:
o Altitude: comprised between 400m & 769m (cf. calculation sheets)
o Temperature: 27°C
o Relative humidity: 50%
o Air density: depending on altitude
- Calculation parameters:
o Excavation length steps: 25m (corresponds to the length of one duct element)
o Power supposed constant for the duration of each step (conservative hypothesis)
o Values are rounded for reading convenience every 300m (+ boundary values) and for
calculation convenience every 25m.
o Singular headlosses such as elbows and duct diameters change are neglected for calculation
convenience. This is deemed acceptable as margin of error regarding fan duty point remains
under 5% for all fans.
Calculation method
Calculation is carried according to previously detailed hypotheses and following rules:
- For each drive, a series of duty points are calculated according to the Swiss recommendation
SIA 196 (cf. appendix 4.3 regarding detailed formulae and abacus) for a series of duct length
on a 25m step basis (ex: duty point for 25m of duct, then 50m, then 75m, up to total length of
the tunnel drive)
- Absorbed power is then calculated based on each duty points, according to the following
2∗4565
formula: P./0 = [W]
789:
With:
• >?@? : total pressure (Pa)
• Q: airflow (m3/s)
• A"BC : fan efficiency
- Electrical power is then calculated by dividing each absorbed power values by the motor & VFD
efficiencies.
- Each calculated electrical power is then multiplied by the time it takes to excavate 25m of tunnel
based on project planning (total length divided by total excavation time, for each drive). The
result of this multiplication corresponds to the energy consumption (in kWh) for each 25m
element considered.
- Total energy consumption is the sum of previously calculated energy consumption.
In the present project, the calculation starts at total adit length minus 150 meters, and stops when total
tunnel drive length is attained (rounded to 25m for calculation convenience).
Thus, Estimative Cumulative Total Electrical Consumption for one tunnel is 1 020 895 kWh.
Estimative Electrical Consumption for the first 150 meters is 122 509 kWh.
Graphs showing electrical power evolution and cumulative energy consumption evolution for one tunnel
