1. A steam generator equipped with a superheater and economizer received feedwater at


141C. After a temperature rise of 22C in the economizer, the feedwater entered the
boiler and was evaporated at 45.7 kgf / cm2 absolute and 97% dry. It passes thru a
superheater emerging at 482C and 44.7 kgf /cm2 absolute. What percent of the total
heat did each of the surfaces contribute? Ans. Economizer, 3.39%; Boiler, 73.40%;
Superheater, 23.21%
2. Steam enters the superheater of a boiler at a pressure of 25 bar and a dryness of 0.98
and leaves at the same pressure at a temperature of 370 C. Determine the heat energy
supplied in the superheater. Ans. 405.51 kJ/kg
3. A boiler generating 7.1 kg / s of steam at 4.137 MPa and 426.7C. Steam is continuously
blown at the rate of 0.31 kg/s. Feedwater enters the economizer at 148.9 C. The furnace
burns 0.75 kg/s of coal with 30470.6 kJ/kg higher heating value. Calculate the overall
thermal efficiency of steam boiler. Ans. 82.86%
4. A steam boiler generates 401,430 kg of steam in a 4-hour period. The steam pressure
is 2750 kPa and 370C. The temperature of the water supplied to the steam generator is
138C. If the steam generator efficiency is 82.5% and the coal has a heating value of
32200 kJ/kg, find the average amount of coal burned per hour. Ans. 9771 kg/hr
5. A steam generator which receives feedwater at 3.5 MPa and 105C delivers 30000 kg of
steam per hour at 3.0 MPa and 315C. Fuel consumption is 2050 kg per hour with higher
heating value of 45350 kJ / kg as fired. The turbine has a steam rate of 5 kg / kW-hr of
generator output. Steam generator auxiliaries use power or steam as follows: feedwater
system, 40 kW; forced-draft fan, 20 kW; induced-draft fan, 40 kW and soot blower, 3280
kg per 24 hours. Determine:
a. The gross efficiency of steam generator. Ans. 83.52%
b. The net efficiency of steam generator. Ans. 81.75%
6. Coal with a higher heating value of 6700 kcal/kg is consumed at the rate of 600 kg/hr in
a Babcock and Wilcox steam boiler with a 200 rated boiler horsepower. The feedwater
temperature is 82C and steam generated is at 11 kgf / cm2 absolute saturated. The
developed boiler horsepower is equivalent to 305 bo. hp.

b. The rate of steam evaporated. Ans. 4419.7 kg/hr
c. The percent rating. Ans. 152.5%
d. The ASME evaporation units. Ans. 1.0773 x 1010 J/hr
e. The factor of evaporation. Ans. 1.08
f. The overall thermal efficiency. Ans. 64.02%
g. The actual specific evaporation. Ans. 7.37 kg steam/kg coal
h. The equivalent specific evaporation. Ans. 7.96 kg steam/kg coal

9. A Horizontal Return Tubular (HRT) Boiler with an effective heating surface of 2000 m 2
generates steam at the rate of 4.5 kg/s. Feedwater enters 5 MPa and 120oC and leaves at
5 MPa and 350oC. Calculate the % rating developed if coal with heating value of 20000
kJ/kg is burned at the rate of 9 MT/hr. Ans. 64.63%
10. Two boilers have capacities of 200 kg/hr and 250 kg/hr. If 150000 kg of coal are supplied to
the two boilers, how many days to consume the available fuel? Ans. 13.89 days

11. The boiler, furnace and grate efficiency of a steam generator is 72%. Coal with moisture
content of 8% is burned at the rate of 0.126 kg/s. The heating value per kg of dry coal is
6389 kcal. Steam is generated at 1.10 MPa and a temperature of 235C. Feedwater
temperature is 93C.
Determine:
a. The steam generated. Ans. 3194.72 kg/hr
b. The developed boiler horsepower. Ans. 227.5 developed bo. hp
c. The cost to evaporate 450 kg per hour of steam if coal costs Php 4500 per metric ton.
Ans. Php 287.51/hr
12. A certain coal has the following ultimate analysis:
C = 70.5 % O2 = 6.0% S = 3.0% M = 4.0%
H2 = 4.5% N2 = 1.0% A = 11.0%
A coal fired boiler of 175000 kg/hr steaming capacity uses this coal as fuel. Calculate the
metric tons of coal needed for 24 hr operation at rated capacity if boiler efficiency is 70%
and factor of evaporation is 1.10. Ans. 502.56 metric ton
13. At 25API specific gravity, what is the higher heating value of oil? Ans. 19180 Btu/lb

14. What is the specific gravity of an oil which has a Baume reading of 28 degrees? Ans. 0.886
