9 Solutions Week 9-Three Dimensional Force Systems

This document discusses three dimensional force systems and moments. It contains tutorial problems involving replacing systems of forces with equivalent wrenches, determining magnitudes of forces and moments, and calculating moments using Cartesian vectors and scalars. The problems involve forces and couples acting on plates, pipes, wrenches and rectangular blocks. Solutions to some of the problems are provided.

Tutorial (week 9)

Engineering Mechanics (statics) (MEE1EMS)

Three dimensional force systems (Part 2)
1. Replace the force at A by an equivalent resultant force and couple moment at point P. Express the results in
Cartesian vector form.

Figure 1
Solution:

2. Replace the three forces acting on the plate by a wrench. Specify the magnitude of the force and couple
moment for the wrench and the point P(x, y) where its line of action intersects the plate.

Figure 2
Solution:
3. Replace the three forces acting on the plate by a wrench. Specify the magnitude of the force and couple
moment for the wrench and the point P(y, z) where its line of action intersects the plate.
4. Replace the three forces acting on the plate by a wrench. Specify the magnitude of the force and couple
moment for the wrench and the point P(x, y) where its line of action intersects the plate.

5. If the couple moment acting on the pipe has a magnitude of 400 N.m, determine the
magnitude F of the vertical force applied to each wrench.
6. The horizontal 30-N force acts on the handle of the wrench. Determine the moment of this force about
point O. Specify the coordinate direction angles of the moment axis.

7. The horizontal 30-N force acts on the handle of the wrench. What is the magnitude of the moment of this force
about the z axis?

8. A 20-N horizontal force is applied perpendicular to the handle of the socket wrench. Determine the magnitude
and the coordinate direction angles of the moment created by this force about point O.
9. Determine the moment produced by force F about the diagonal AF of the rectangular block. Express the result
as a Cartesian vector.

10. Determine the moment produced by force F about the diagonal OD of the rectangular block. Express the
result as a Cartesian vector.
11. The tool is used to shut off gas valves that are difficult to access. If the force F is applied to the handle,
determine the component of the moment created about the z axis of the valve.
12. Determine the magnitude of the moments of the force F about the x, y, and z axes. Solve the problem (a) using
a Cartesian vector approach and (b) using a scalar approach.

Solution:

13. Replace the force and couple moment system acting on the rectangular block by a wrench. Specify the
magnitude of the force and couple moment of the wrench and where its line of action intersects the x–y plane.
