INTRO TO LIVESTOCK AND POULTRY PRODUCTION

Name : Uriah Vincent B. Bulatin Rating : __________

Lab. Schedule: Wednesday (10AM-1PM) Date Submitted: 03-22-23

Exercise No.1
Farm Tour

I. Introduction
Animal husbandry refers to livestock raising and selective breeding. It is the management and care of
animals in which the genetic qualities and behavior of animals are further developed for profit. A large number
of farmers depend upon animal husbandry for their livelihood. Most people often though that raising animals
might be a simple task while not seeing the bigger picture of its complexity. In this activity, students were to
tour the livestock system of VSU Baybay Campus. Farm tours can be a valuable tool for individuals interested
in gaining knowledge and expertise in animal production. By providing hands-on learning, exposure to different
production methods, and access to experienced farmers, farm tours can help individuals develop a deeper
understanding of animal husbandry and become experts in the field.

II. Objectives
1. Identify various animal species raised at the Department of Animal Science and
discuss the purpose they may serve, and;
2. Discuss basic farm settings.

III. Methodology
1. Since the laboratory activity is to be given at the first meeting, the laboratory in-charge is
to orient students on the class policies and grading of the laboratory course.
2. The in-charge will then provide student with some insights in
animal production/husbandry.
3. After the classroom discussion, students will be toured to the Poultry project, Swine
project, Goat and Sheep project and Beef cattle project of the Department of
Animal Science.
4. Once in the tour, students are tasked to note all their observations.
IV. Activities

1. Fill in the table with the information you have noted in the farm tour on the different
animal projects.

2. Discuss the use of each animal facility and equipment observed during the farm tour (you
may support your answer with articles)
The VSU Baybay Campus’ livestock system have different kinds of facilities for raising
livestock depending on the type of animal being raised, the climate and environmental conditions,
and the scale of the operation. Some common facilities used in livestock farming in VSU Baybay
Campus include:
- A fold unit (poultry) is the system whereby a small portable house with a run attached is used
so that the birds can make use of the run during the day and the house at night.
- The semi-intensive system (poultry) is an alternative method of rearing broilers in which the
birds are kept in a poultry house and have free access to a pasture area during the day.
- Incubator, an insulated enclosure in which temperature, humidity, and other environmental
conditions can be regulated at levels optimal for growth, hatching, or reproduction.
- Pigpen is a small enclosure made of wood, bamboo, or concrete where the pigs are kept. As a
bedding material, rice hulls provide excellent drainage and can maintain a mostly dry
environment. Rice hulls can help to absorb smells and foul odors, create limited dust, and can
eventually be removed and used as a soil amendment.
- Feeding Trough is a long, narrow container where the livestock's food and water are placed.
- Goat House is a small enclosure made of wood, bamboo, or concrete where the goats are kept.
- Watering Trough is a container where clean water is provided to the livestock.
- Shed or barn provides shelter for the cows and cattle during extreme weather conditions. It also
protects them from predators.
- Fencing is used to enclose the backyard area and prevent the cows and cattle from wandering
off.

3. Find some important animal husbandry terminologies in the library or online and define each
of them (list 10 terminologies)

1. Breeding: The process of selecting and mating animals to produce offspring with desirable
traits.
2. Weaning: The process of removing young animals from their mother's milk and
transitioning them to solid food.
3. Embryo transfer: The process of removing embryos from a female animal and
transferring them to the reproductive tract of another female animal for gestation.
4. Artificial insemination: The process of depositing semen from a male animal into the
reproductive tract of a female animal using instruments rather than natural mating.
5. Grazing: Allowing animals to feed on natural vegetation in pastures or range lands.
6. Farrowing: The act of giving birth to piglets by a sow.
7. Castrate: The alteration of a male animal's reproductive system that renders it infertile.
8. Sow: A mature female swine which has already produced a litter ofpiglets.
9. Gilt: Female swine that has yet to farrow.
10. Gestation: Duration of pregnancy; the period of development in the uterus from
conception until birth.

4. In your own opinion, in what way the information you acquired in the farm tour could help you
become experts in the field of animal production?
- Farm tours can be a valuable tool for individuals interested in gaining knowledge and expertise
in animal production. By providing hands-on learning, exposure to different production methods,
and access to experienced farmers, farm tours can help individuals develop a deeper
understanding of animal husbandry and become experts in the field.
